luette: you can put all of them in the image, e.g. in /etc/ltsp/krb5.keytab-pc05, and then symlink each one of them with RCFILE_01="ln -sf /etc/ltsp/krb5.keytab-$(hostname) /target/path/krb5.keytab"

Hi all
11:15
Do you know why when I click on "Shutdown" on a thin client it only does a logoff, not a thin client shutdown?
11:15
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 x64
11:16
alkisg : Skype is finally working doing skype --secondary using localapps
11:17
<alkisg>
Cool. About shutdown, read this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/491940

@alkisg: thx, i will have a try with this

Joanet: don't use the repo in 12.04

it'll just mess up your ltsp installation

Hello
19:50
<alkisg>
Hi
19:51
<ltspuser_28>
I have a problem with an LTSP setup
19:51
server is a 32 CPU Xeon with 128GB of ram
19:51
RAID 1+0 SAS
19:52
2x 1Gbps LACP ethernet
19:52
connected to Juniper EX4200 switches
19:52
switches are linked via 2x 10Gbps for 20Gbps
19:52* Hyperbyte drools
19:52
<ltspuser_28>
we have 85 clients
19:53

Tell me more.

the CPUs in question are Xeon E4600 8 core 2.67GHz CPUs

19:54
<Hyperbyte>
ltspuser_28, Firefox is a resource hog.
19:54
<ltspuser_28>
we have the ability to increase memory allocation to 512GB of ram but the system is not using more than 37GB total

As in, it completely rapes hardware. Easily uses several hundred MB of RAM with only a few tabs open, not to mention a lot of CPU.
19:55
What kind of clients do you have?
19:55
<ltspuser_28>
We are using Diskless Workstation 1700 Clients,
19:55
all brand new
19:55
<alkisg>
"53" sounds weird... so with 45 clients everything's fine, and with 55 there are freezes?
19:55
<ltspuser_28>
we upgraded from older models

55 is starting to freeze up
19:56
and 67 is unbearable
19:56
<Hyperbyte>
ltspuser_28, DLWS 1700 clients can easily handle Firefox as a local application.
19:56
It'll greatly improve performance of browsing too, it'll fix any problems you might have with flash.
19:56
<ltspuser_28>
at around 45 clients, process in the queue is (top) at 5
19:57
at 55 it is at 10

sorry
20:00
false

we are running X over SSH

in addition, the CPUs E4600 2.67GHz 8x core (4x CPU total = 32 physical cores) hyperthread (Linux sees as 64 CPUs)
20:02
<alkisg>
Can you try with LDM_DIRECTX=True just to verify that the ssh encryption is actually the main bottleneck?
20:03
<ltspuser_23>
I can do that tonight once the users are gone for the day
20:03
if that does not work, should we first disable Flash for the users, and then try Firefox as local app
20:03
<alkisg>
You won't be able to easily simulate user traffic though...
20:03
(once they're gone :D)
20:04
<ltspuser_23>
Also we can put Google Chrome, how is that compare with Firefox in terms of CPU usage
20:04
<alkisg>
Firefox as a local app should solve the problem, yeah
20:04
The app doesn't matter, as long as it sends screen updates, ssh needs a lot of cpu to encrypt them
20:04
<ltspuser_23>
The users are using websites that are heavy in AJAX and Javascript, that is what their jobs require
20:05
<alkisg>
Screen updates are the problem, not background scripts per se
20:05
Just an `ls -R /` in an xterm would need a lot of CPU as well
20:05
<ltspuser_23>
ah, I see
20:06
ok, let me first disable X over SSH tonight (LDM_DIRECT=True) and see what happens tomorrow
20:06
if that does not help, remove Flash
20:06
if that does not help, move Firefox to Local App
20:06
<Hyperbyte>
ltspuser_23, are your users currently using flash?
20:06
<ltspuser_23>
I would want to do one change at a time
20:06
yes
20:06
they are
20:07
<alkisg>
`top` should also tell you the apps that need the most cpu... either sshd, or the firefox plugin container (flash)
20:08
<ltspuser_23>
yes, I observer it is always Firefox at the top of the CPU usage list, at least the top 30 processes, I just was not sure if it is Firefox proper or Flash within Firefox
20:08
<alkisg>
firefox == ajax, javascript etc. plugin-container == flash. sshd == ldm_directx=false
20:09
<ltspuser_23>
got it
20:09
it is Firefox at the top, definitely
20:09
so it is AJAX and Javascript
20:10
I know the website responsible for this, and it is what every user used to perform their job
20:13
Ok, excellent information. I will disable X over SSH tonight and observe that the next day and if the is still performance issues, run Firefox on local app more. I will report my findings tomorrow, and for Hyperbyte and alkisg, I very much appreciate your help. It is also very nice to help management purchase the top of line networking and server equipment.
20:13
<alkisg>
Then do give google chrome a try, I hear they have a faster javascript engine

last question, should I replace Firefox with Chrome
20:15
ok, we will try all of them. Thank you for your help alkisg and Hyperbyte.

ltspuser_23, sure. :)

I found it. Was digging around for screen-session.d :)

XRANDR_OUTPUT01 example?

nevermind. found it in your irclogs.

I'm having a problem. so I set XRANDR_OUTPUT_01="VGA" and the resolution goes horribly low. 800x600? 1024x768?
20:55
brb.

<vagrantc>
unkmar: i've got a couple minutes
21:25
<unkmar>
okay, I got the IPAPPEND problem fixed. still not sure what my deal with xrandr settings is.
21:26
I simply want: xrandr --output LVDS-1 --off
21:27* vagrantc is not real experienced with xrandr
21:27* vagrantc vaguely recalls XRANDR_COMMAND_NN=
21:28
<unkmar>
well, what I have works but... the screen resolution appears to default to around 800x600, Maybe as much as 1024x768. Looks stretched and ugly. :/
21:29
<Hyperbyte>
unkmar, see:

lts.conf: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf
21:29
<unkmar>
yep, 1024x768. :(
21:29
<Hyperbyte>
XRANDR_COMMAND_0 = --output LVDS-1 --off
21:29
Should work
21:30
If not you can disable it via kernel parameters
21:30
But that's more tricky.
21:30
<vagrantc>
unkmar: ... XRANDR_COMMAND_0=--output LVDS-1 --off
21:30
yeah ,that

well, that still didn't work. :(
21:38
guess I can put that line back in the I10-xrandr where ever that file si.
21:38
s/si/is
21:40
okay, so that sort of works. After login.
21:44
the XRANDR_COMMAND_0 works after login.
21:46
okay, maybe it isn't. I still had a xrandr line in my users .xsessionrc. :/
21:47
<Hyperbyte>
unkmar, I've had similar problems.
21:47
To be honest.
21:48
I contacted the company where I bought my thin clients, and they provided some script that hacked an xorg.org where LVDS was disabled and that did work.

I've never investigated this enough to file a bug report, but there might be something wrong with the XRANDR_* bits in lts.conf
21:49

Hyperbyte: odd, seeing as how that is suppose to be executed in the exact same spot. :(
21:49

XRANDR_COMMAND_0 definitely runs before LDM login or not at all...

So... You guys will get all defensive if I debug it and make a suggestive fix. :D

Not that I have one at the moment. Just saying.

no, we love patches

greetings all! I'm currently using slower, outdated PCs as terminals with LTSP and it's good. But they're big, ugly, noisy, power hungry and they run hot so I need more AC. The Atom-based clients seem overpriced for what they are, but ARM clearly holds a lot of promise. I've tried the Pi but wasn't satisfied with graphics performance, I couldn't get sound working and USB can be flaky. Is anyone using any sort of low cost ARM boards / mini PCs / sticks successfu
23:59
lly with LTSP?
