<jgee>
I can no longer boot my HP thinclients after upgrading 18.04 (kernel 4.15.0-23 boots ok, but 4.15.0-39 fails). Has anyone had trouble with recent kernels?
19:08
<alkisg>
Nope
19:08
Also, really, -23? That's a lot of versions behind
19:09
<jgee>
I haven't tested all of the intervening. That's just what I had on a working server
19:10
<alkisg>
Are you sure it's the kernel and not some other update or something else?
19:10
What is the error message?
19:10
<jgee>
But I don't even update the image. Leaving everything the same, and only changing the pxelinux.cfg/default makes it work or not
19:11
<alkisg>
Well then the image doesn't have the modules
19:11
<jgee>
No error message, it just fails to boot ("Loading vmlinuz... ok, Loading initrd.img ... ok")
19:11
<alkisg>
!quiet-splash
19:11
<ltsp>
quiet-splash: to disable the splash screen in Ubuntu, in order to see any boot error messages, run sudo gedit /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default and remove quiet splash plymouth:force-splash vt.handoff=7
19:12
<alkisg>
Did you run ltsp-update-image after you installed that kernel?
19:13
<jgee>
Yes, and it doesn't work. When I change back the kernel in the tftpboot dir, it goes back to working (with or without updating the image)
19:15
<alkisg>
Are you using a chroot, or the chrootless setup?
19:15
<jgee>
Still chroot
19:15
<alkisg>
Did you see any errors while installing that newer kernel?
19:16
<jgee>
None
19:16
<alkisg>
Do other clients boot?
19:17
<jgee>
No, not these old ones (t5740) or newer ones (t630)
19:17
<alkisg>
So it doesn't sound like a kernel problem. A new kernel may have issues on some hardware, but it wouldn't make sense if no client booted.
19:17
It sounds like something else
19:18
You could also try with a vm
19:18
!kvm
19:18
<ltsp>
kvm: Virtual thin client: kvm -m 256 -vga vmware -ctrl-grab -no-shutdown -net nic,model=virtio -net user,tftp=/var/lib/tftpboot,bootfile=/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0
19:19
<alkisg>
And, do disable "quiet splash" so that you see actual messages
19:19
Finally, make sure that you have the greek schools ppa in the chroot as well, not just on the server
19:20
<jgee>
Ok, I'll try that. Thanks!
