<dshea_>
Hi, has anyone had any success with setting up ltsp fat clients for use with condor as computational nodes?
15:38
<||cw>
I haven't heard of anyone doing that, but as long as you can set node names dynamically I don't see it being that much of a challenge
15:40
<dshea_>
I just want to make sure the nodes are actually taking advantage of their local cpu/storage. I'm pretty new to ltsp, so I want to make sure I understand what I am doing before I shoot myself in the foot.
15:41
ideally they'd all load identical linux image from the ltsp server, but computation would be using the local cpu and not the ltsp server. I'm looking at either LTSP with fat clients or DRBL, but I'm not sure which is more suited to the task.
15:42
<alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
15:42
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
15:42
<dshea_>
@alkisg thanks!
15:42* alkisg proposes that one
15:43
<alkisg>
I.e. you configure your ltsp server as a condor node, then generate an image out of its hard disk contents. you'll also need a small script to change the node name etc.
15:44* dshea_ will check that out, sounds like what I am looking for.

19:59
<vagrantc>
markit: just looks like a customized OS with LDM on top...
20:00
could probably easily build a Debian-based armel that does the same thing, but might not be quite as lightweight
20:01
or using the raspbian's armhf (v6) port

it's basically an ARM chroot dumped to an sd card for booting on the rpi
20:13brunolambert has joined IRC (brunolambert!blambert@nat/revolutionlinux/x-coldgurvlgxwkdvw)
20:20
<markit>
and could be made work easely with a LTSP standard installation?
20:20
what about create a chroot for ARM and is it possible/how can dhcp make ltsp use the right nbd image and tfpt provide the right arm kernel?
20:23
<vagrantc>
markit: it would take some manual configuration, but totally doable.
20:23
<markit>
vagrantc: I think that would worth a wiki page... but as far as I remember, LTSP has this feature (i.e. have multiple chroots with different architecture) since long time
20:24
so whould be already documented and tested
20:24
or am I wrong?
20:24
<vagrantc>
not a lot
20:24
<markit>
(never had the need so far)
20:24
<vagrantc>
exactly
20:24
<markit>
vagrantc: you mean that for sure works, is just a matter of test and document, or "maybe works, maybe not"?
20:25
if the former I can try to find some time and then write in the wiki, if the latter I'm not good enough
20:25
<vagrantc>
i definitely works, there's probably very little documentation about it
20:28
i mean, i haven't tested the raspberry pi specifically, but other arm based thin clients
20:29
multiple chroots generally require some manual configuration of DHCP in order to ensure the appropriate architecture is booted to
20:30
<markit>
vagrantc: the problem of the RB is that has hdmi, at least in "my" schools VGA is far more spread
20:31
also, I've tried at home with 2 hdmi devices, a monitor and a tv, and in both case I had to modify the config.txt... in one case reaching the right resolution, failing the other
20:32
so I've the feeling that a lot of "young users" will be in troubles with it
20:32
<vagrantc>
config.txt?
20:35
<markit>
vagrantc: oh is a special file in /boot that has specific RB parameters
20:35
mostrly for the video, some for overclock or other stuff I've not yet had a look at
20:39
<||cw>
markit: there are hdmi to vga converters.
20:40
may or may not be cheaper than new displays
20:40
you don't need hdmi displays though, just dvi and a hdmi to dvi plug which is very cheap
20:40Phantomas has left IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@ubuntu/member/phantomas, Ping timeout: 256 seconds)
20:41
<||cw>
also, for pxe on arm, you need a bootloader that supports pxe booting. I odn't know if there is one for rpi, but it's an open platform so it should be possible
20:49
<markit>
||cw: as you stated, hdmi to vga is not a simple "cable", must be "active" and costs a lot (compared to RB price). Also, DVI is not present in most of the monitor of the schools as well
20:50
have to go to sleep, thansk a lot a nd good night
