how do i get rid of that avahi crap?
ltspcfg is saying my eth0 is eth0:avahi or something
my /network/interfaces file has no mention of it
is network-manager installed ?
it seems to be a popular thing to blame for network configuration strangeness
networkmanager is one of the most annoying software that came out last year
|05:28||Avatara has joined #ltsp|
it is installed
vagrantrc: where else could there be mention of it other than the interfaces file/
|05:32||wf_c0d3r has quit IRC|
sahil: well, network-manager kind of treats your networking configuration as it's own and, as far as i understand, doesn't respect other configuration schemes
this is coming from someone who's never used it, only the complaints i've heard from others

I have a question I am a bad linux user, so please pardon me, but I have an old Compaq rack mount server that was donated dual p3 900mhz and about 512mb. I have never done a project with linux, just a bad user using desktop graphical environment and a LITTLE command line. I am worried about control, and do not totally like ubuntu but know that it is friendly for most.
Oh, sorry. I have two questions: 1) anyone think that server can handle 12 to 15 terminals and 2) am I just being chicken about ubuntu and/or security (I do not want users to have command line access, at least no base system access).
I am developing a lab for non-profit org to allow children to do homework
cottima: that server would be ok for about 5 terminals. take a look at: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/ServerSizing
also, the only way to know for sure is to try it
if possible, try to add some more ram, that's the most important thing
and i'd be curious to hear why you don't totally like ubuntu
anyone got ltsp 5 running on a centos/fedora system ?

imho ltsp runs on any distro which can run dhcp tftp nfs and X server
i used to have a working ltsp 4.2
cant get ltsp5 running tho
i can see ubuntu firing up .. then it just hangs
what you mean?
it gets a dhcp address. .. kernel loads and ubuntu splash screen starts
splash screen disappears and it stops
what on screen in that momet?
splash screen starts - bootsplash?
|12:05||cottima has joined #ltsp|
try at first pass kernel parameter vga=normal or switch bootsplash off
for more output
its managed to come up with somethign that time
cant access tty: job control turned off
testing this from a vm
how do i pass the kernel param to the pxe kernel ?

Etherboot is getting a dhcp address (I see DHCP discover/offer/request/ack in Ethereal), but when IP-Config tries to get a DHCP address I only see DHCP discover/offer. IP-Config doesn't continue with a DHCP request.
any ltsp devs awake ?
|23:19||* sutula suspects there are people awake somewhere in the world|
still trying to get ltsp working after about 4 hrs .. starting to do my head in :)
fc7 with the feisty tarball
i see the bootsplash for ubuntu
that isn't shocking
I think that is part of the tarball
|23:24||* jammcq wonders what he was expecting to see|
and if i tail /var/log/messages i can see dhcp requests, offers and packs
i dont get ldm
what kind of thin client?
infact i cant seem to get it to do anything other than drop back to a busy box after time
ive got it in vmware atm
ok, you need to disable usplash, to see what it's doing
find the pxelinux.cfg/default file, and remove the 'usplash quiet' options
doesnt seem to do anything
is usplash still showing?
let me just try again
then you didn't do it right
or you did it to the wrong file
F-GT: are you using an external dhcp server?
im using the dchp server on my fc7 box
that's no problem
do this: grep server_args /etc/xinetd.d/tftp
i just changed the other one
"other one" ?
ok .. getting text now :)
nfsmount need a path.. hmm
what's your 'root-path' set to, in dhcpd.conf?
i'm guessing you have the ip address in there
I just found out that in order to use an external dhcpd3-server, I had to add "always-broadcast true;" to my dhcpd.conf. Otherwise, when IP-Config tries to do a DHCP discover, it doesn't seem to see the offer response.
ringlej: never heard of that
option root-path "192.168.0.1:/opt/ltsp/ubuntu_feisty_i386";
F-GT: yeah, ltsp-5 has a bug, it can't handle the IP address in the root-path
remove the 192.168.0.1:
so it's just the path
got it .. trying again
F-GT: try adding "always-broadcast true;"
wait .. i didnt restart dhcpd
|23:33||subir has joined #ltsp|
F-GT: he's way past dhcp issues
that was for ringlej
|23:35||* sutula rests his case that people are awake, even some that know something (unlike himself :)|
jammcq: ok. I wasn't really sure about that. There are two different entites that do dhcp request during the boot of a ltsp-client: pxe/etherboot and later IP-Config. In my case, I was having a problem with the later.
ok.. that's stopped the nfs mount errors
ringlej: yeah, but by the time NFS starts doing it's thing, you'll be way past dhcp issues
nfs over tcp not available
F-GT: umm, dunno how fedora enables nfs over tcp
i have nfs running .. i guess i can do a bit more reading now i have something else to go onto
thanks for your help jammcq
1 step closer :)
was there any docs on the wiki about the bug with the ip path ?
umm, dunno. it's in Launchpad, to get fixed
ahh ok ... i was up till about 3.30 trying to figure it out .. checking my old ltsp 4.2 configs against 5 ... seeing what i'd missed
oh well good to know :)
