hi anyone around ?
Hyperbyte: "ask" :: Don't ask to ask a question, simply ask it, and if someone knows the answer, they'll respond. Please hang around for at least 15 minutes after asking a question, as not everybody constantly monitors the channel.
Hyperbyte: Hi, I installed the LTSP using http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP/Howto and got DHCP and LTSP GUI working but the user cant login, /var/log/daemon.log says http://ltsp.pastebin.com/bf50unrd
If you SSH to the terminal server, can you log in as the user you're trying to log in via LTSP?
yeah.. Im trying to replace nbd with NFS but not successful yet
Okay, how far did you get?
nfs server is running
/opt/ltsp is exported to world
in bug the guy has mentioned something about reducing the size of image... but how do I do that ?
To be perfectly honest, I haven't got a clue.
I use LTSP with Fedora, which uses NFS by default.

alkisg can probably help you with this. :-)
Hyperbyte: Hmm thanks, np
will check out

which is the best OS for LTSP.. Im deploying a set of 15 terminals and a single server
sbalneav: Error: "os" is not a valid command.
sbalneav: Error: "best" is not a valid command.
heh, can't remember.
At any rate
Debian, fedora, ubuntu and OpenSUSE all support LTSP
Ubuntu or Fedora.. Confused
no CentOS ?
No one's ported it yet, as far as I know.
Im working on ubuntu, but nbd is still causing problems :(
What problem? Is it the NBD proxy that's causing you a difficulty?
You can do that, or just use NFS
We're here at the LTSP hackfest, and I've got it on my todo to have a read through the nbd_proxy code.
sbalneav: wow, nbd is giving me file size too big error
my i386.img file size is 560 mb
and i have no idea how to use NFS in LTSP
searching on google but not so lucky yet
|12:51||mgariepy has joined #ltsp|
There's a "reverting to NFS" section n there.
is NBD better than NFS ?
Yes, NBD has some performance gains over nfs
where are you getting this error?
can I change NBD size limit ? I tried executing nbd-server command from shell but i think nbrootd is imp
can you paste the exact error message
vagrantc: "bestltspdistro" :: whatever you prefer
|13:01||dlezcano has joined #ltsp|
and BTW i followed instructions from http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP/Howto
There's no error thee about the file size being too large...
The disconnect is issued because of that
I was able to see the GUI in client but when I logged in this message pops up
Do you have /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/ltsp_nbd file ? according to patch mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/485709 it should be there but I dont have it
check in /opt/ltsp/i38x/usr/share/init......
|13:07||* vagrantc waves to sbalneav|
yeah got that
shall I apply the patch http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37462215/patch.diff to it ?
vagrantc: hey hey
Trixboxer: sure, try it and see if it helps.
just save a backupcopy so you can revert
|13:12||robehend1 has joined #ltsp|
sbalneav: patch is not getting applied, its giving "Hunk #2 FAILED at 67.", shall I pastebin my ltsp_nbd ?
i'd just grab the newest version of ltsp_nbd from bzr...
Just have a look at what the patch is changing, and manually fix up your ltsp_nbd
or, do as vagrantc suggested.
you can also dump it in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/initramfs-tools/scripts instead of mangling the version shipped with the package ... the version in /etc will take precedence
is it possible to have two X sessions on one machine? ctrl-alt-f7 & ctrl-alt-f8 ?
if i'm rnning music in f7 and switch to f8, will it stop playing the music in f7?
is having two X sessions in the documentation?
okay i think i found some stuff from the mail list
SCREEN_07=ldm ; SCREEN_08=OTHERTHINGY
|13:35||dlezcano has quit IRC|
you could even run SCREEN_07=ldm and SCREEN_08=ldm ... if for some reason you wanted two different users logged in from the same thin client...
vagrantc: your amazing :)
i like to help out when i can :)
makes it worth it
what would OTHERTHINGY be other than ldm? gdm?
there's an rdesktop screen script for logging into windows servers (or linux servers running xrdp
all sorts of crazy ideas in there.
Isn't LTSP the best?
vagrantc: new beginning, I have installed a new Ubuntu 10.04 server, now should I follow "https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall" ?
Ghidorah: exactly :)
Trixboxer: i'm not sure what's the best documentation for ubuntu, but that doesn't sound like a bad starting point... hopefully. :)
The docs on UbuntuLTSP are pretty nice
Trixboxer: that's pretty well what i've used a few times in the last couple months
Trixboxer: the disconnect is caused by a check made by the ldm scripts to see if there's a newer version of the image, and if it is, it prompts for a reboot. It's normal to see that disconnect (on /dev/nbd9)
If you're able to login and then X crashes and you logout, check for a possible compiz problem
alkisg: "gnome-wm" :: the default window manager in gnome is gnome-wm, which automatically chooses compiz if it thinks that the card supports it. Compiz is causing login problems to some clients. To disable it, see !disable_compiz. To restore it, see !restore_compiz
I've been having compiz to, I just disabled it.
robehend1: you have a few minutes? I'm trying to get this LTSP-Cluster going
and I'm not being too sucessful
hmm ok... let me build the LTSP on ubuntu and will let u know guys.. doing it the 3rd time and counting...
If you restarted with the server version, you'll need to install ubuntu-desktop as well (with tasksel install)
alkisg: is that for me ?
Yes, if you used the server CD
I have installed ubuntu 10.04 Desktop
and now ltsp-server-standalone
OK, I thought that you meant the server CD there: "new beginning, I have installed a new Ubuntu 10.04 server,"
Go ahead with the quick install page
hmm i don't have lts.conf in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386 .. is this normal if i haven't set any options in it?
AndyGraybeal: yes, by default no lts.conf exists
alkisg: cool, thank you
so i just edited /var/lib/tftboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf and i added two lines: SCREEN_07=ldm & SCREEN_08=ldm .... i rebooted the thinclient, it only has x on F7, F8 is a blinking cursor in the top left corner. what did i do wrong?
i'm in ubuntu 10.04
AndyGraybeal: Is your server 10.04 ?
oh oh i didn't put a [Default]
do i need [Default]
wow, I have good hopes then :)
alkisg, vagrantc you each get licks! it works swimmingly.
Trixboxer: ltsp is awesome
|14:04||ogra_ac has joined #ltsp|
AndyGraybeal, do u use NBD or NFS ?
i'm not sure, i don't think i use either

i don't even know what that is :)

AndyGraybeal: It's the way your filesystem is mounted. Pretty nifty stuff.
ok "ltsp-build-client --arch i386" done
should I install "nfs-kernel-server" or "nfs-server" ?
they are one in the same as i recall
ok will install "nfs-server"
aptitude show nfs-server
yeah same :P
is "/opt/ltsp *(ro,no_root_squash,async,no_subtree_check)" for /etc/exports correct ?
or /opt/ltsp/i386 ?
Trixboxer: if you're having a compiz problem, nfs won't help... did you try booting your clients with the new setup?
not yet... is /etc/exports not necessary ?
|14:26||dlezcano has joined #ltsp|
i don't think there's a good reason to setup nfs until you ahve the clients working maybe
abeehc, one more lick from me
:D :D :D
u guys rocks
i think that was my mistake to export :(
its running flawlessly :)
that's a strong word
i'm sure you'll find a challenge in there haha
I know that #ltsp is the place then
