<joulez>
hello what version of ltsp is localapps supported from?
00:30
<vagrantc>
quite a while now, what versions are you looking at using? on what distro?
00:31
<joulez>
we are running 5.1.10-2
00:31
debian (lenny)
00:34
<vagrantc>
support for lenny was dropped about 5 months ago...
00:35
<joulez>
we are stuck on it for the moment (some legacy apps)
00:35
<vagrantc>
you could get localapps support with an ltsp backport, if backports.debian.org still supports lenny-backports.
00:36
<joulez>
see what it pulls in.
00:36
<vagrantc>
or build a squeeze chroot on a lenny server
00:37
first version in debian to support localapps was 5.1.17-1
00:38
squeeze and lenny-backports had 5.2.4-2
00:41
<joulez>
lenny-backports is no more, unless its archived somewhere.
00:42
found it http://archive.debian.org/debian-archive/backports.org/dists/lenny-backports/
00:42
<vagrantc>
if i recall correctly, it was a pretty trivial rebuild, you could download ltsp, ldm and ltspfs sources from squeeze and rebuild if you have to
00:46Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
00:48
<joulez>
thanks.
00:51
<vagrantc>
but if archive.debian.org has it, you could get it from there too
00:55
<joulez>
running wheezy at home, kde 4.8 is awesome.
00:56
can you run kde 4.8 as a local app? or are we going fat client?
00:58
<vagrantc>
running a window manager as a localapp will effectively make all the programs is starts localapps as well
00:59
at which point, you're better off going fat client
01:01
<joulez>
ok thanks.
01:01
gunna try this.

<joulez>
hi, how do i force ltsp to use NFS?
02:00
<vagrantc>
on ubuntu?
02:03
<joulez>
oh i see it.
02:03
its ok i guess debian squeeze changed over to nbd ?
02:06
ok boots now.
02:06
<vagrantc>
no, debian defaults to NFS
02:06
but most versions of ltsp include an ltsp-update-image which automatically converts to using NBD, but there's no need to run ltsp-update-image on Debian
02:06
<joulez>
what rewrote my /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default?
02:06
oh i ran it :/
02:07
<vagrantc>
recent versions of ltsp-update-image actually do some meaningful sanity checking, finally! :)
02:07
it's also much easier to switch back and forth now...
02:07
<joulez>
cool
02:07
<vagrantc>
but that's with ltsp 5.4+
02:08
<joulez>
yes i really want to get off lenny here.
02:25
ltsp-localapps xterm, doesn't do anything, is ltsp-localappsd supposed to be running on the server or the client? I don't see it running on the client, but its installed.
02:25
<vagrantc>
ltsp-localappsd should be running on the client
02:26
<joulez>
i have LOCAL_APPS=True
02:26
<vagrantc>
what version are you running?
02:27
<joulez>
5.2.4-2~bpo50+2
02:28* vagrantc vaguely recalls a version minimum of openssh-server 5+ on the server.
02:29
<joulez>
1:5.1p1-5
02:29
ltsp-localappsd isn't running on the client anyhow.
02:30
<vagrantc>
it's been so long since i've used such an old version...
02:30
<joulez>
ok
02:30
<vagrantc>
hard to remember what the status should be
02:31
joulez: ldm version?
02:31
joulez: does "ltsp-info" return anything?

04:41

<baptiste>
Andy2, how can a user autologin? is this based on the thin client's MAC address?
09:01
never thought of that, but a client that autologins can serve as a public computer, it would work and look like a standalone computer but would only be a user account on ltsp machine behind the scenes
09:02
<muppis>
I run my htpc that way.
09:02
<baptiste>
:)
09:03
so you have the "hybrid client" setup with video player working on the local box?
09:03
<muppis>
So I can make htpc virtually any pc which can boot to ltsp.
09:04
Special user account for that. :D
09:05
<baptiste>
can you choose the desktop environment per user? i.e. lxde, or fluxbox instead of gnome

and i am using xfce4 as my desktop environment
09:32

<baptiste>
thanks all. I did have the ltsp "Administrator's Reference" printed and assembled, it's a joy. chapters about chroot, sound, login manager, xorg, printers etc.
10:34
that thin client with the sempron 64 @ 1GHz : it's not that bad, about the performance of an Atom. more powerful than tablets - but those simply don't run flash. Sure, the web is terribly heavy.
10:35
the flashblock extension is hugely useful, I always install it. I'd need to deploy it to new or existing user accounts
10:42
<joulez>
i thought it would cope.
10:44
its not a 64 though.
10:45
to be honest firefox performed better served from the server (dell poweredge).
10:45
it loaded quicker too.
10:47
baptiste: i was actually comparing playing a youtube video.
10:48
<baptiste>
does the video play back better from the client?
10:48
<joulez>
at standard size
10:48
yes.
10:49
<baptiste>
but running 50 tabs.. that must kill it
10:49
<joulez>
50 tabs?
10:50
<baptiste>
I mean, heavy use of web pages will be slow on the client no matter what
10:50
I'd make it run out of memory too
10:50
<joulez>
yeh
10:51
i think /home is mounted over ssh as well.
10:51
sshfs
10:51
to think i once had a ppro150 with windowmaker and thought it was fast.
10:52
firefox is a memory hog.
10:52
<baptiste>
this is where a solution with expensive microsoft licenses, and branded thin clients can give you best of both things : everything is done on server, except video playback which is beamed to the client - with hardware decoding even
10:53
<joulez>
well
10:54
looked at NX?
10:54
i'm using it now, its pretty damn fast.
10:54
<baptiste>
not really
10:55
where I used ltsp, the bearded geek set it up to use VNC. pretty fast too! clients were P2 233 with 64MB ram
10:57
youtube video was usable in small window. there was no sound (nor money for speakers anyway)
10:59
when I used vnc on home computers (windows xp, ubuntu 10.04) it was a lot slower, dunno why.
10:59
<joulez>
NX does it differently
11:00
but that said, theres also wayland

Hi everyone!
11:25
<Andy2>
I have a LTSP cluster with autologin and sometimes I can automatically login and later not. I looked at the app server if it depends on them but it is like random. In my syslog i get nbd_server disconnect request received. I don't know where the problem is.
11:26

I can blame you all day long if I want to! ;-)

But luckily for you, blame is irrelevant. :P
11:37
<Andy2>
Hyperbyte: I just start my thinclient and it loads the image after this the windows appears with information about the application server and so on. I press ok and then a few seconds nothing is happening. Then it get darker and the client treies to login on the next server
11:38

sorry, my version of lts.conf only supports mac addresses
11:39
