hello, im trying to think of some benchmarking and/or analysis for ltsp/standalone linux/mille-xterm and possibly others as a part of advocacy for ltsp ... the problem is, im not sure what im looking for .... stuped ... right ... :( , i thought maybe one thing can be reducing the overhead of having multiple OS memory allocations, not to mention overall hardware savings ... any ideas of what can be benchmarked ? i know many things are just OS dependent
04:50
and irrelevnt to ltsp, but those would be interesting too, like does having multiple instences of the same app running by diffrent users but on the same machine increase performance? like maybe shared libraries are cached in the memory for second ...nth request for them ?
04:51
does anyone think there is some interesting analysis needed somewhere ?

heh. X.org 7.2-something in debian detected thi video card (i810) just fine, but X.org 7.3-something seems to think it's just a plain ol vesa, and fails miserably.
12:19
maybe i should actually try again with 7.2, if i can find it.

is there a default window manager in ltsp-build-clients , like xfce or kde
12:28
<vagrantc>
ogra1: xserver-xorg-video-intel includes the i810 driver
12:28
<masus>
or have to install it seperately
12:28
<vagrantc>
ltsp-build-client doesn't install a window manager
12:28
by default
12:28
<sbalneav>
masus: No, no window manager is installed in the chroot, as it normally runs on the server.
12:28
<vagrantc>
typically you want to install that on your server
12:28
<ogra1>
vagrantc: hmm ? they are separate packages for me
12:28
<masus>
hmm
12:29
<vagrantc>
ogra1: big surprise :P
12:29
<ogra1>
i810 also needs 915resolution (which is an evil hack)
12:29
<masus>
have anybody documentation to install xfce for ltsp
12:29
<ogra1>
-intelb doesnt
12:30
<vagrantc>
ogra1: well, in an fresh sid install from yesterday, it only pulled in -intel package, and the -intel package claims to include the i810 driver.
12:30
<ogra1>
strange
12:30* vagrantc doesn't find it particularly strange
12:31* ogra1 does .... but then there are a lot of things i find strange and you might not :)
12:32

if there's anything i'm not surprised by, it's differences in packaging between ubuntu and debian :P

klausade: you could set up a different pxe boot menu for it
16:24
klausade: i think it's also possible through dhcp, but i'm not really sure.

hmmm... seems like mknbi/mkelf isn't getting installed or isn't working or something
16:32
gah. the third box i tried also has one of these intel cards :(

ah, scotty changed the mkelf code ... that's why nbi stuff isn't happening.

yeah, for the backport, i think we need to support the xdebconfigurator stuff
16:40

klausade: i haven't seen X work yet... but the first few machines i've tried all have similar video cards
16:48
<klausade>
vagrantc: yeah, X is a devilish thing. I have 750 clients, all came up with 1024x768 when running ltsp4.2. With ltsp5, trying both with and without xdebconfigurator only half comes up as expected, the rest comes up with either too low, or too high resolution, or none at all :-(
