Hi guys. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 Alternate as a LTSP Server. The install was very easy and we have a working lab of thinclients. But with regular machines like laptops that will not use ltsp, the DHCP is offering corrects IPs but they are not acessing Internet. Any clue?

how far did you get/
07:06
<scottmaccal>
not far
07:07
<IHS_Volunteer>
Silveira_Neto, it's not set up as a router. it doesn't forward/share the network between the NICs
07:08
Today could be problematic. My cellphone, though plugged in all night, didn't charge. So it's completely dead.
07:08
<squarepeg>
if you run wireshark on the server as it boots you will prob see the dhcp piece..i will pastebot the dhcpd.conf that works..but exactly why i am not sure..
07:09
i havnt commented out to see what needs to be global and what should be in the specific stanza for the particular client
07:11
scottmaccal, for me the initrd loads to packet 12289 and then barfs

So, after a marathon session last night.... I've got the beginnings of a sabayon docbook manual.
09:09
I have to re-screencap all the windows, since they've changed.
09:10
but... I'm well on the way to getting Sabayon documented.
09:11
<Appiah>
oh
09:11
it's not documented? I was planing on reading docs and learn soon
09:14
<rjune>
sbalneav, you sir, are a pimp
09:15
we bow before your greatness.
09:17
<sbalneav>
Appiah: Well there's some documentation out there.
09:17
It was written back when the app was at Version 0.18
09:17
<Appiah>
I see
09:17
<sbalneav>
We're now on 2.29
09:17

<Appiah>

09:25
<rjune>
sbalneav, how does sabayon handle network setups?
09:25
<sbalneav>
So, I've got a machine here. User upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic. Machine boots fine to login box. No one can log in.
09:25
<rjune>
LDAP?
09:25
<sbalneav>
Not even at the console login
09:25
no, standalone machine. Home user.
09:25
So, boot into recovery protocol
09:26
sorry, shell
09:26
<rjune>
heh
09:26
<sbalneav>
apt-* seems to work, EVERYthing seems to work, except pam
09:26
<rjune>
want me to take a peek at the pam files for reference?
09:26
<sbalneav>
doing any pam operation results in a segfault
09:26
<rjune>
oh, snap.
09:26
<sbalneav>
they're fine.
09:27
so, run a passwd , get a segfault
09:27
<rjune>
apt-fix-whatever-you-screwed-up-you-damn-computer work?
09:27
how about getent passwd ?
09:27
<sbalneav>
ltrace reveals it's dying in pam_start
09:27
haven't tried that yet.
09:27
<rjune>
that should be nsswitch
09:27
<sbalneav>
So, I'm wondering if I've got a bad package somewhere.
09:27
is there a way in apt to reinstall EVERYTHING?
09:28
I know you can do apt-get --reinstall install <foo>
09:28
but there's a lot of <foo>
09:28
I just want to say, "look, sit off in a corner for an hour or to, and re-install every package"
09:29
<rjune>
want a script to do it?
09:29
<sbalneav>
like ap-get --reinstall upgrade
09:29
<rjune>
dpkg -l | cut -f 3 -d ' ' should get you a package list.
09:29
<sbalneav>
that's what I was thinking
09:29
just wondered if there was a more elegant way :)
09:29
<rjune>
feed that into a script that reads stdin and does apt-get --reinstall install <foo>
09:29
bah, this is LTSP, we don't do things elegantly.
09:29
<sbalneav>
Well, we TRY
09:30
ok, that's what I suspected.
09:30
<rjune>
that's a problem where I don't think there is an elegant solution.
09:30
<sbalneav>
Message received and understood.
09:30
<rjune>
the ugly may be hidden from you... but I suspect it's still there.

09:41
that'll work for the connection but will copy all of the thin client root in the user's home directory
09:41
(starting by bin, dev and etc)
09:41
dev containing a few symlink loops, it can take an infinite amount of disk space

they are safe to use it or not yet?
09:43
<stgraber>
that's what I deploy in production, it's basically karmic's ltsp but on jaunty
09:44
<coordinador>
oh god is true, i have bin and boot dirs too, didnt copy the rest because the system cannot copy beyond dev

hello, can someone please help me solve my problem with Ubuntu and LTSP?

if I want to connect, I can see the login screen

and then "No response from server, restarting"
14:52

did you change your ip ?
14:52
<k21>
I looked at forum and tried updating ssh keys, but that does not work
14:52
<johnny>
ah
14:52
<k21>
no, did not change it
14:53
<johnny>
is sshd running?
14:53
<k21>
but it looks very similar to that problem
14:53
I can log in through ctrl+alt+f1
14:53
<johnny>
that's not logging in remotely tho.. only locally
14:53
can you ssh as a user acount?
14:54
ssh useryoucreatedforltsp@yourserverip
14:54
<k21>
maybe I should also note, that i try it on virtual machines and that it already worked before some time
14:54
ok, i will try it
14:55
oh, looks interesting, ssh does not work
14:57
ok, I figured out that I have to use my server username, so it works
15:00
<johnny>
you have to use accounts created on your server yes
15:01
<k21>
however, is it correct that i access the whole filesystem and not only the /opt/ltsp/i386 part?
15:02
<johnny>
after login yes..
15:03
/opt/ltsp/i386/ is what gets loaded to the thin client so you can get the stuff needed to bootstrap yourself into the server
15:04
<k21>
oh, thanks, I had a kind of mess in this
15:11hersonls has quit IRC
15:20
<k21>
btw, I have read in some LTSP documentation, that the min. req. for the client is about 24MB RAM. Do you by a chance know if it is possible to get some cheap thin client with small memory and some acceptable processor? Everything I could find had at least 256MB, while some of them did not have for example mathematical coprocessor, so it had to be emulated by the OS etc.
15:20pmatulis has quit IRC
15:21
<vagrantc>
i wouldn't recommend a thin client with less that 128MB of ram these days, unfortunately.
15:22
<k21>
so the doc was obsolete?
15:22
<johnny>
when was it ever 24mb ram?
15:22
k21, read the
15:22
!docs
15:22
<ltspbot>
johnny: "docs" is For the most current documentation, see http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LtspDocumentationUpstream
15:22
<johnny>
those are the real docs
15:22
<vagrantc>
it *might* be *possible*, but it probably won't work for most needs. it might not even be possible, though.
15:23
i think ltsp 4.2 worked with 16-24MB of ram.
15:23
but those were simpler days.
15:23
people didn't expect as much.
15:24
<k21>
yes, it is possible that I looked at a doc for a wrong version
15:27
here is where I read it: http://www.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LTSPTerminal
15:27
it really surprised me, when I read it :)
15:35bieb has left #ltsp
15:37
<vagrantc>
the ltsp.org wiki has so much outdated information, and a few kernels of useful information. i have long advocated to rename it to something else indicating that... like oldwiki.ltsp.org or some such.
15:49
<k21>
however, I looked at disklessworkstations.com (one of the links in ubuntu wiki) and found cheapest TC: 1GHz proc, 256MB RAM for 285 USD
15:49
then I searched through some local internet shops and found this (not really TC): 1.6GHz proc, 2GB RAM, 160GB harddrive for approx. 306 USD
15:49
why are the TCs so expensive? or can I get them cheaper somewhere?
15:49
<vagrantc>
they're produced in smaller quantities, and have no moving parts, typically, which makes them break less.
15:50
whereas even a cheap desktop system will likely not work without a fan... and once the fan goes, you have to replace the whole thing.
15:50
well, don't have to, but in some ways that's the easiest way
15:52
they also typical consume far less electricity
15:52
and take up less physical space
15:55
<k21>
i will post link to the second PC I found - it dous not look like having a fan and they also write there, that it has very low power consumption, it is no real TC only because of the HDD
15:55
it is strange but even after googling for its name, i found only czech sites:
15:55
http://www.mironet.cz/hal3000-ion-9102--atom230--2gb--160gb--nv9400--hdmi--bila+dp96372/
16:00
and if I sold the HDD for, lets say, 40 usd, it would be even cheaper than the TC from disklessworkstations.com (considered that it will be possible to take the HDD out)

<msaul_>
hi, was wondering if someone could help me with display manager indicating "no response from server: restarting"...
21:01
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 from alternate CD with LTSP. Thin client brings up display manager (nice looking btw)...
21:02
Was wondering if I missed a set with config - it has been a while...
21:03
<sbalneav>
You re-worked your ip addresses this morning with alkisg
21:03
did you ltsp-update-sshkeys && ltsp-update-image?
21:03
<msaul_>
Yes, that is correct :)
21:04
No, should I do that?
21:04
<sbalneav>
yes
21:06
<msaul_>
Just doing that now...
21:13
Did both commands you suggested. Should I reboot server?
21:14
<sbalneav>
No, just the thin client

Nice, that worked - thanks
21:16
Are there any times I should issue those commands, or is that just a "one-shot" deal?
21:16
Just curious...
21:19
<sbalneav>
Any time you fiddle with your ip address on the server, you should update the sshkeys

Will do - thanks very much :)
21:21
This will be for a Linux lab for a church, where our college donated most of the equipment and furniture - total cost $150 for a lab costing much more :)
