hello, I just installed K12LTSP 5 EL (the CentOS based distribution) on a dell poweredge 2900. the clients are booting, but seem to hang at "nfs: server 10.0.0.254 not responding, still trying"
10:38
nfs is running, I restarted it and disabled the firewall, but still no luck
10:38
does anyone have any idea?
11:01jsgotangco has joined #ltsp

<yigal>
is there a "performance study|" that shows the affect of client's capabilities? e.g. how much DRAM should the client have, clients cpu strength etc?
11:15
<vagrantc>
if you're running as a real thin client, 64-128MB of ram and a 300-400MHz processor would be great
11:16
if you're running your sessions unencrypted, even less processing is needed
11:16
<breun>
still no one that knows why I get "nfs: server 10.0.0.254 not responding, still trying" on my fresh K12LTSP 5EL install?
11:16
<vagrantc>
yigal: but i don't know of any studies in that matter. that just comes from experience
11:17
breun: have you looked on the wiki page ?

i am ramping up a class, real thin clients. I plan to have some 64MB clients, some 128MB and up.. I am afraid of network trafic, and reponsivness of the client

yigal: are you able to ssh into the server from another machine ?
11:51
<wpgmb>
vagrant: My firewall is also my dhcp, and if it could be the dhcp server for both the ltsp server and the clients, that would be great (less load on the ltsp, I guess)
11:52
<vagrantc>
wpgmb: DHCP is ridiculously low load ... you want to have control of the DHCP server for your LTSP clients on the LTSP server.
11:53
<wpgmb>
vagrant: setup as follows: Internet -> firewall (Smoothwall = DHCP server) -> LTSP server (7.04) (Static IP) -> switch(es) -> clients (Static IP's)
11:53
<vagrantc>
wpgmb: if you're got two NICs in the server, then you can leave DHCP alone on your firewall, and setup DHCP on your LTSP server to only answer on the thin client network
11:54
wpgmb: yeah, that's perfect. set up your LTSP server to server DHCP only on one interface
11:54
should be the default behavior on a fresh edubuntu install
11:55
<wpgmb>
where can I paste my current dhcp.conf?

12:00
wpgmb: so what is your server's static IP address ?

wpgmb: and what address is it getting from DHCP ?
12:00bobby_C has quit IRC
12:00
<wpgmb>
192.168.0.25
12:00
same
12:01
dhcp firewall/server setup to hand out IP's by MAC
12:01
<vagrantc>
you probably want to set your static IP address to 192.168.1.1
12:01
and restart DHCP
12:01
wait a minute ...
12:01
<wpgmb>
That wouldn't be on the same network as the firewall, or are you talking about the NIC for the LTSP side?
12:02
<vagrantc>
yes, the LTSP side
12:02
<wpgmb>
sorry
12:02
hang on
12:02
<vagrantc>
you should have two IP addresses ... one that you get from your firewall's DHCP server ... and one that you set staticly for the LTSP network.
12:02
<wpgmb>
yep
12:02
<vagrantc>
each network card should have a different IP address on a different network.
12:02
<wpgmb>
correct
12:03
<vagrantc>
so what IP address did you get from your firewall's DHCP, and what IP address did you statically configure for the LTSP network ?
12:04
<wpgmb>
firewall to eth0 = 192.168.0.25 & eth1 (for LTSP) is static at 192.168.1.1
12:04
<vagrantc>
ok
12:04
<wpgmb>
I haven't configured DHCP for LTSP yet
12:04
<vagrantc>
looks like you've configured /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf ... ?!
12:04
<wpgmb>
(I was hoping it would be simplified by pointing the clients to the firewall's dhcp)
12:04
<vagrantc>
that will add 100 headaches
12:05
use the LTSP server's DHCP.
12:05
<wpgmb>
ok
12:05
how do I check that config?
12:05
<vagrantc>
check what configure?
12:05
<wpgmb>
or - correct it...
12:05
<vagrantc>
change 192.168.0. to 192.168.1.
12:06
that should fix it.
12:06
<wpgmb>

anyone: do I need to create a user on the ltsp server, ie "jimmy", before "jimmy" can use his terminal to login as himself? lo
14:49
<vagrantc>
correct
14:49
the thin client logs into the server and runs all applications on the server... so you need an account on the server itself.
14:50
you can essentially think of the thin client as an extra monitor, mouse and keyboard for the server itself...

you'll have to figure out how to configure local devices and sound yourself, as it is not currently supported via XDMCP
