<Hyperbyte>
Hi!
08:32
This morning (I think there might've been some updates this weekend, not sure) all thin clients' MATE sessions can't detect monitors properly, nor can they find USB audio hardware (headsets).
08:32
I'm thinking this can't be a coincidence. Any ideas? Hints?
08:34
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: did you somehow boot a different kernel than what is available in the image? E.g. ltsp-update-kernels with old image or something?
08:34
Test uname -r vs ls /boot in the image
08:35
<Hyperbyte>
I did yes!
08:35
How on earth did that happen?
08:36
<alkisg>
You should know :)
08:36
<Hyperbyte>
4.4.0-97 in the client image, running 3.11.0-26
08:36
I didn't do any updates in ltsp-chroot though.
08:36
<alkisg>
3.11 is 14.04?
08:36
And 4.4 is 16.04?
08:36
That's a big difference there
08:36
<Hyperbyte>
I think so
08:36
Yeah
08:36
<alkisg>
Wrong server, wrong image?
08:36
Check your tftp server, why is 3.11 there
08:37
<Hyperbyte>
I was thinking so too, but that doesn't seem likely
08:37
Let me run kernel updates in the chroot, rebuild and then run ltsp-update-kernels
08:37
I'll also check that.
08:37
I don't get why this appears out of nowhere on a regular monday...
08:37
There were thunderbird and firefox unattended upgrades, I checked.
08:40
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: start with "is 3.11 in my tftp server?"
08:40
If yes, that's your fault :D
08:40
No updates could have done that
08:40
<Hyperbyte>
Well currently it isn't.
08:40
Maybe ltsp-update-image deleted it?
08:41
<alkisg>
If you ran it after the clients booted, it might.
08:41
ltsp-update-image calls ltsp-update-kernels, which deletes old kernels
08:41
But, that would have been deleted ages ago
08:41
<Hyperbyte>
Yes.
08:41
<alkisg>
Are you sure you didn't boot an older server or VM with 14.04 temporarily, at the time the clients were booting?
08:41
<Hyperbyte>
I wonder if there could be some mishap............... oh I got it.
08:43
Damn, that's a dumb one.
08:43
Still it's interesting how it messes up like this
08:43
<alkisg>
sysadmin mishaps are usually funny later on :D
08:44
<Hyperbyte>
I run everything for the entire company on one physical virtual server.
08:46
I wanted a second virtual platform, as fallback and to spread load, but that was too expensive. So instead I took an old server and installed it as a fallback server that only provides basic system.

08:52
<Hyperbyte>
Fallback server pings the big server, if it's down it brings up it's own dhcp service providing fallback terminal server.
08:53
<alkisg>
It's strange that it booted the new image from the old server though. Misconfiguration in the backup server?
08:57
<Hyperbyte>
I edited it's dhcp range this weekend and restarted the dhcp server. Last step of course I shouldn't have done, as that turned on the dhcp server.
08:57
So two active dhcp servers.
08:58
Still strange that it always took the tftp image from the fallback and the ltsp image from the primary one.
08:58
<alkisg>
Ah so maybe the first dhcp request came from the old server, and the second dhcp request from the new server, and you're not using ipappend 3
08:58
first=pxe, second=initramfs
08:58
That would explain everything
08:58
<Hyperbyte>
Yeah.
08:59
Well almost everything I think?
08:59
Why did fallback always win with PXE and primary always win with initramfs?
08:59
You'd except one dhcp server to be faster, all the time.
08:59
*expect
09:00
<alkisg>
Maybe it's thinking "oh, you are ip=1.2.3.4 with id="Linux ipconfig"?! But I just gave 1.2.3.4 to id="PXEClient", let me check/ping..."
09:01
...and while it checks/pings, the other server has already answered
09:01
<Hyperbyte>
Yeah, that sounds kinda logical.
09:01
:-)
09:01
<alkisg>
That's why ipappend 3 is good :D
09:01
<Hyperbyte>
Stupid of me to restart the dhcp 2nd server... it's so common to restart a daemon after editing config file that you don't even think. :-D
