Has anyone experiencein upgrading from ltsp 4.2 to ltsp 5 on gentoo?
10:31
<jconlon>
I am having a very hard time with a hp t5135 thin client, it has a via eden chipset, but I am only able to make it work with vesa drivers. I have tried XSERVER=via, and XSERVER=openchrome in lts.conf, but client just crashes. If I try to install proprietary drivers in chroot, I get all kinds of error messages. Any ideas?

Anyone got time to help with some hp t5135 thin clients that only want to work with the vesa driver?

<johnny>
you have to install some of the drivers on the server too
12:27
atleas with nvidia
12:28
if they are powerful enough, try running them as fat client jconlon
12:28
how much ram and cpu do they have?
12:28
even if it's not worth running them permanently that way, it might be worth it for a test

Experience in upgrading from ltsp 4.2 to ltsp 5 on gentoo, anyone?
15:23
<johnny>
there's no upgrading
15:23
it's a complete replacement
15:23
the only thing compatible is the lts.conf file
15:24
the rest is so different you might as well call it a different program almost
15:24
so. it's not really upgradable
15:24
you would just have to build a totally new chroot
15:25
<vmu>
johnny: ok, sounds like a lot of work ..
15:26
<johnny>
well, it's what everybody else had to do when moving to ltsp 5, as it went from custom distro to using distro's own tools
15:26
<vmu>
... but is it really worth it? (never change a running ...)
15:26
<johnny>
also.. ltsp5 needs a new maintainer
15:26
i wrote it, but i don't have a gentoo machine

Going to sleep mode :) hi jammcq, you started ltsp right? Thanks a lot for your brilliant idea and this stunning project
17:39
<jammcq>
markit: yep
17:39
no prob, glad you are getting some use out of it
17:39
<markit>
I remember you some years ago, when I tried 4.something
17:39
<jammcq>
4.2 was the last release that I was really involved in
17:39
<markit>
was new to GNU/linux laso, I was shocked to be able to find such an important person in IRC
17:40
<jammcq>
since then, lots of awesome people have come in and done a great job moving ltsp forward
17:40
<markit>
I mean, was helped by the author himself
17:40
<jammcq>
heh
17:40
<markit>
are you still involved in the development?
17:41
<jammcq>
not so much
17:41
<markit>
in any case, 5.x was a very good move
17:41
<jammcq>
I mostly watch these guys do all the cool stuff
17:41
<markit>
because you can relay on distro builds
17:41
hehehe
17:41
<jammcq>
yeah, we're quite happy with the direction that it's headed
17:42
<markit>
you deserve the merit of having started all this :) thanks and good night, happy to have talked with you again

17:44

17:44
<jammcq>

17:44
I need to talk to Jorge too. try and get him to join us

17:48
<jammcq>
yeah, i don't think that'll be a problem this year
17:48
<ogra_cmpc>
thats awesome
17:49
<jammcq>
not enough leadtime for gadi to produce another :)
17:49
<ogra_cmpc>
how about vagrant ?
17:49
heh, zou never know
17:49
s/zou/you
17:52* ogra_cmpc does a real US roundtrip in oct/nov ... dallas, orlando, boston, maine, boston ...
17:52
<ogra_cmpc>
susie already hates me for it
17:52
<jammcq>

17:52
<ogra_cmpc>
heh
17:53
she's a woman ... they never forget
17:53
but yes, i'll bribe her for sure
17:53
i upgraded my car btw ...
17:53
<jammcq>
I saw some recent pictures
17:53
looked pretty sweet
17:53
<ogra_cmpc>
yeah
17:53
<jammcq>
too bad you can't bring it with you
17:54
or have it bring you
17:54
<ogra_cmpc>
my old one needed a new blinker...
17:54
so i bought one ... with a car attached ;)
17:54
hehe
17:54
<jammcq>
heh
17:54
<ogra_cmpc>
it brings me to all european appointments now at least
17:55
<jammcq>
that can still be a long drive
17:55
<cole2>
Hi All
17:55
<jammcq>
fast tho
17:55
hey cole2
17:55
<ogra_cmpc>
yup
17:55
<cole2>
Can I ask a Question
17:55
<jammcq>
sure
17:55
<cole2>
I was wondering if there is a common cause for clients viewing javascript heavy webpages to slow right down
17:56
<jammcq>
well... depends on what the javascript is doing
17:56
i've got some pretty crazy javascript apps and the users stay in the browser all day long, and it works quite well
17:56
<ogra_cmpc>
javascript runs in your browser so indeed that puts some cpu load on
17:56
<cole2>
... The javascript im using is just website effects, fading images and the like
17:57
<ogra_cmpc>
vs stuff that only happens on the webserver
17:57
<jammcq>
I've got about 30 users all running firefox 3.6 with lots of javascript
17:57
ah
17:57
effects.... that's a whole different thing
17:57* ogra_cmpc guesses thats rather the graphics than the javascript
17:57
<jammcq>
I use alot of jQuery, but I turn the fade effects off
17:57
<cole2>
My thinking is that the issue is because the client only has an 8MB video card is this a valid conclusion?
17:58
<jammcq>
well... could certainly be a factor
17:58
<ogra_cmpc>
it's likely caching the graphics which uses a lot of X pixmap cache
17:58
<jammcq>
it could be the X driver
17:58
<cole2>
... That lost me...
17:58
<ogra_cmpc>
yeah
17:58
<jammcq>
are the effects really important?
17:59
<cole2>
That actually brings me to another question, is there anyway to tell what driver X is using for the graphics card
17:59
And unfortunitly i am a web designer, effects are very important
18:00
<jammcq>
cole2: you need to enable a shell on the terminal and look at /var/log/Xorg.log
18:00
<ogra_cmpc>
enable localapps and start an xterm attached to the client, then you csn read /var/log/Xorg.0.log in that term
18:00
<cole2>
Already have a shell what am i looking for?
18:00
<ogra_cmpc>
iirc ther was something inthe docs for it
18:00
oh,if you have a shell, just look at the above file
18:01
the driver will be mentioned somewhere in ther
18:01
e
18:01
<jammcq>
scroll down about 100 lines in the file and you'll start seeing things like: (II) fglrx(0): .....
18:01
but 'fglrx' will likely be different on yours
18:02
<cole2>
Ive just dropped the file into my server so i can examine it with an easy editor\
18:04
... Xorg.0.log only has 15 lines
18:04
<jammcq>
hmmm
18:05
<cole2>
Xorg.7.log has a bunch of stuff in it\
18:05
<ogra_cmpc>
try that then\
18:06
<cole2>
I have "Matched Driver ati as autoconfigured driver 0"
18:06
and again for "vesa" and "fbdev"
18:06
<ogra_cmpc>
and the client has an ati card ?
18:07
<cole2>
client has ati Rage XL
18:07
according to LSPCI
18:07
<ogra_cmpc>
then ati sounds ok
18:07
not sure if that old card is still supported by your driver indeed
18:07
rage is pretty much 1990's
18:08
if it falls back to vesa that might explain the slowness
18:09
<cole2>
... The client i am using is a HP T5700, I dont know if that makes a difference
18:10
is this "MACH64: Driver for ATI Mach64 chipsets" anything to concerned about
18:11
<jammcq>
no
18:11
<ogra_cmpc>
well, if thats really used, thats the best driver for the card i think
18:11
<jammcq>
doesn't that machine have like a 300Mhz chip in it?
18:11
or 500Mhz
18:12
that's more likely the performance bottleneck
18:12
<cole2>
1GHZ Processor and 512M ram
18:13
it has XP Embedded loaded into the solid state drive
18:13
But im using them purely as network machines
18:13
<ogra_cmpc>
any localapps ?
18:13
<cole2>
no.
18:13* ogra_cmpc would run firefox locally on such machines
18:14
<cole2>
Potential Permormance increase?
18:14
<ogra_cmpc>
of rthings like flash at least
18:14
*for
18:16
<cole2>
Ive actually just tried Chromium and noticed Slight increase in performance in javascript. Also using firefox i have never noticed issues with flash, in youtube
18:16
I will try local Firefox and see how i get on.
18:21
<highvoltage>
holas
18:21* ogra_cmpc goes to bed now

18:32
<highvoltage>
oooh!
18:33
<jammcq>
ogra was here 4 years ago when we saw him do Dark side of the moon
18:33
<highvoltage>
that's like, one of the biggest live shows to see ever
18:33
I'd try to make it if it wasn't UDS time.... perhaps in 4 years :)
18:35
<ogra_cmpc>
jammcq, in detroit again ?
18:35
highvoltage, also the last one of him
