Hello all,
16:29
I have a cron job i would like to run on each of my thin client machine, i looked at the man page for ltsp trying to set the param CRONTAB_01 but no luck so far. Can you show me a proper way, i am a little confused of client server and crontab relationship here.
16:29
thank you.
16:30
<Hyperbyte>
Pastebin your lts.conf here
16:30
<tfdl>

<ltsp>
pastebin: the LTSP pastebin is at http://ltsp.pastebin.com. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebin, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. Don't forget to paste the URL of the text here.
16:33
<tfdl>
its on other machine i need to go and get it, i think i just saw a typo or something. I will be back soon to let you know thanks!
16:41
hi <ltsp> i thought it was my typo but tried again it still does not work, so i pasted the config to pastebin under title <tfdl>
16:42
here is some background.
16:42
i have script that communicate with serial port.
16:43
i tested it on the ltsp server it works fine with a crontab.
16:43
but this is all done on the server side.
16:43
my goal is to make this script to work with thin clients.
16:44
so i follow man page for ltsp using configuration CRONTAB_01 = */1 * * * * /home/dung/ledStat.sh
16:45
shut down restart client, and it does not work, if it works it should turn my indicator light on the serial port to green from red.
16:50
i have also run the script.sh manually on thin client via ltsp-localapps xterm and confirm that it works on thin client

<tfdl>
how can i run sudo on a thin client machine via ltsp-localapps xterm?
16:57
thanks.
16:57
<||cw>
same as anything else?
16:58
<tfdl>
i have no password, sorry should say that too.

when prompted for the password of this user1.
16:58
<||cw>
though you'll need to modify the sudo config files in the image and rebuild, since the local user probably isn't going to be in any of the default groups
16:59
might also have to do something to add the password local
16:59
like, adding the feature to ldm (which I think is planned in a future release
16:59
<tfdl>
i added user1 to sudo group, but that only works for the server terminal and not the local terminal.

<||cw>
exactly. modify it in the image too
17:00
<tfdl>
ok
17:02
<||cw> you know how i can run a cronjob on client machine, please?
17:03
<||cw>
install and configure cron in the image
17:03
<tfdl>
i have a script.sh and using crontab on a server it works fine.
17:03
ah, i have to install too.
17:04
<||cw>
the image, and the clients, are separate linux computers. the image is just super trim, so you have to install and config anything you want installed, just as you would any minimal system
17:04
<tfdl>
i set the configuration in lts.conf like this CRONTAB_01 = */1 * * * * /home/dung/ledStat.sh
17:06
you know where i can find installation instruction for crontab on image?
17:07
is it similar to installing firefox local app because that is somethign i have done before?
17:15
<||cw>
apt-get install cron?
17:16
or, yes, probably same as a localapp
17:18
<tfdl>
ok i am not so sure but i will give it a try :)
17:19
thanks <||cw>.

<tfdl>
hello <alkisg>, i try to install a crontab to run a cron job using this instruction but it does not work, can you please give instruction even a brief one or point to a place i can find instruction for ltsp 10.04. Thanks very much for your help.
19:19
here is the instruction link i tried: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ChrootCronjobs
19:20
<vagrantc>
10.04 is pretty old, people may have a hard time remembering :P
19:20
cronjobs should work much better in recent versions...
19:20
<tfdl>
i should also say cron job and cron tab for thin clients.
19:21
<vagrantc>
it's fairly simple lts.conf options for newer versions of ltsp...
19:21
<tfdl>
you see the problem is that we are having old hardware that works only with 10.04
19:21
i tried newer ltsp version but no luck. we will use newer version with the new hardware though.
19:22
<vagrantc>
debian might support the older hardware and newer ltsp
19:22
and you could still connect to an ubuntu server
19:22
if you wanted
19:23
<tfdl>
i will try that, but right now ltsp 10.04 has been put in production for about a week
19:23
<vagrantc>
it's a *new* installation using 10.04?
19:23
<tfdl>
people so excited about it, ltsp has solved major problem here.
19:23
yes,
19:24
it is a fresh new installation in production 10.04
19:24
<vagrantc>
isn't 10.04 out of support? at least for desktop apps?
19:24
i.e. no security updates
19:24
<tfdl>
we will go with the the newer version on a new hardwares.
19:25
yes, you are right i knw 10.04 is out of support for desktop, still support for server.
19:25
<vagrantc>
well, an LTSP server is really just a Desktop server... i.e. most of the components it relies on are out of support cycle
19:26
<willianmazzardo>
alkisg, hi again ;)
19:27
<tfdl>
i am leading the ltsp implementation project here.
19:27
but you see i have no choice
19:27
<vagrantc>
your call...
19:27
<tfdl>
i want newer version, tested all of the newer version including 13.x
19:27
but the only version that work and newest is 10.04
19:28
so we quickly went into production at the school library
19:29
it is working so well here, and i want to do a bit more to turn the led light red/green.
19:30
it got the script and cron job working tested only on the server, and now i try put that to the image of the thin client.
19:30
following this instruction, but no luck: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ChrootCronjobs
19:30* vagrantc wonders if there's a newer version of ltsp backported to 10.04
19:32
<vagrantc>
tfdl: you might try without the crontab.sh part...
19:33
tfdl: i.e. just the CRONTAB_01, CRONTAB_02 bits...
19:33
<tfdl>
ok
19:33
trying
19:33
<vagrantc>
not sure when support went in, though
19:33
tfdl: you can just commment out the RCFILE line
19:33
rather than rebuild the image
19:33
<tfdl>
ok, i will try that in the lts.conf
19:34
trying

19:54

19:54
localapps would run as the user...
19:54
<tfdl>
what need to be run as root? the cron job?
19:54
<vagrantc>
the script to edit crontab
19:56
<tfdl>
right now it is: */1 * * * * /home/dung/ledStat.sh
19:57
you want me to put it in: sudo */1 * * * * /home/dung/ledStat.sh
19:57
the thin client machine home directory is /home/user1
19:58
where should the script be stored to get the right permission for execution?
19:59
we dont downplay the security but we rather have it working ...
19:59
so we can try changing permission any way that may help.

tfdl: how did you edit crontab?
20:01
<tfdl>
on the ltsp server i do sudo crontab -e.
20:01
then i insert the line */1 * * * * /home/dung/ledStat.sh
20:01
then save
20:01
<vagrantc>
you need it on the server, or on the thin client?
20:02

20:02
12:53 < tfdl> so i tried to input the cronjob manually to the client again via localapps xterm and still it does not get picked up.
20:02
i don't understand how you edited crontab on the thin client using localapps without gaining root access
20:03
you would need root access to be able to edit it from "localapps xterm"
20:03
<Axreal>
hello, i have a question regarding setting up LTSP with active directory users if anyone can spare me a few mins?
20:03
<tfdl>
yes, you are right, that i added the user1 to sudo group.
20:05
sorry <vagrantc> it is confusing for me.
20:06
if i can re-cap it like this

or may be i am completely wrong, and need to start over some where?
20:10
thanks <vagrantc>
20:12
<vagrantc>
i really can't remember how to use such an old install...
20:12
someone else might be willing to help
20:12
<tfdl>
i understand
20:12
we will go with 12 or even 13 in the new hardwares
20:13
<vagrantc>
tfdl: curious what hardware you've got?
20:13
<tfdl>
the silly video card in our old hardware kept us in 10.04.
20:14
VIA embedded
20:14
the only video driver works for it is VESA

you wont believe it but with vesa we can not rotate the screen, when our screen is installed portrait to display a web page with class room information . so i have to rotate the webpage 90 degree to make it portrait and up right.

<vagrantc> the computer looks liek this http://www.viaembedded.com/en/products/systems/990/1/AMOS-5000_(EITX-3000).html
20:17
i can give you the specs
20:18
but i remember the video card was via or chrome9 made by S3
20:18
S3 company
20:18
<vagrantc>
i've got a bunch of old via clients working fine with debian wheezy
20:19
<tfdl>
really i can try that
20:19
<vagrantc>
you *might* even be able to build a wheezy chroot on an ubuntu server... i've done it in the past, although it depends somewhat how close in sync the LTSP packages are
20:19
<tfdl>
adapter type: via chrome9 hc3 igp, s3 graphics co, ltd.
20:21
can you send me a link to debian wheezy? i will start the project all over again on the test environment

Running LTSP5 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS: can ltsp be configured to allow a PTP mode still camera to connect to a client?
20:23
<tfdl>
but <vagrantc> where is the ltsp installation for it? it could be some different installation?

Hi willianmazzardo, hi all
20:29
tfdl: you don't need sudo, you can just put the user in the dialout group
20:30
So it's possible to use ltsp-localapps on the server to run a program locally on the client, to access the serial port

i think i can do whatever you tell me
20:34
but <alkisg> where do i should start now, and do what?
20:35
<vagrantc>
tfdl: http://wiki.debian.org/LTSP
20:36* alkisg tried ubuntu 12.04 with an ancient trident card this morning, and it would only load X with xserver=VESA. On the other hand, my wheezy chroot worked fine with it :)
20:37
<alkisg>
That's the 3rd card I see that works with debian but not with ubuntu...
20:37
10.04 was more friendly to old cards
20:39
<tfdl>
ok, i will test debian ltsp <vagrantc>, but for now can you and <alkisg> walk me thru the crontab issue?

<alkisg> i am reading this again: <alkisg> So it's possible to use ltsp-localapps on the server to run a program locally on the client, to access the serial port
20:43
can you specify what client to you run the program/script on?
20:43
that will work for me, if i can run a script from the server onto a specified client.
20:45
this way i can send different param to different client.

Running LTSP5 on Ubuntu 10.04LTS: can ltsp be configured to allow a PTP mode still camera to connect to a client?
21:01
<||cw>
rwmarch: not unless you can ltspfs to treat it like a normal disk
21:02
which I think shouldn't be impossible
21:03
<alkisg>
tfdl: yes, you can specify a client, you just need to run it as root on the server
21:03
<rwmarch>
Apparently, this camera, Nikon S9400, is only able to do PTP. Cannot be set to mass storage device.
21:04
<alkisg>
You can use localapps to access it...
21:05
<||cw>
what happened to the patch mentioned in this http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.terminal-server.general/24328
21:05
<rwmarch>
<alkisg>, are you referring to PTP camera?
21:05
<alkisg>
rwmarch: yup
21:05
<||cw>
also, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GphotoLtspfs
21:08
<rwmarch>
Is there a reference to the specifics to do this? I am having difficulty finding the info? I did see the overview in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GphotoLtspfs. I'm wondering if I can find a step by step description anywhere?
21:09
<alkisg>
||cw: about the patch, gadi hasn't been around for years now, I don't think it has been committed upstream. It sure is possible to use udev to mount it though.
21:10
<vagrantc>
rwmarch: i don't think it ever went anywhere
21:11
rwmarch: i had intended to add support, but lost access to a camera that needed it
21:11
many, many years ago
21:12
<alkisg>
Android devices also don't offer USB storage mode nowadays (4.2+), so it'll be necessary there too
21:13
...why not let everything get automounted to <client>/media like usual, and then forward all the /media directory to the server?
21:14
<rwmarch>
I read somewhere that hardware makers see PTP as the future and that fewer and fewer devices will offer mass storage capability.
21:16
<||cw>
rwmarch: yup
