btw, can I assign whatever hostname to the ltsp server, right? It does not have to be "server" (seems that was suggested for LTSP5 or Epoptes, don't recall)
16:36
<alkisg>
Happy new year btw markit :)
16:36
<markit>
hi, happy new yeart to you too :))
16:36* alkisg loves how markit starts with "btw" when he hasn't said anything else :D
16:36
<markit>
was a joke or not LTSP is LTSP20?
16:36
I'm almost in my head all the time, lol
16:37
<alkisg>
The new LTSP is called LTSP, there's no LTSP20 or LTSP19
16:37
The old LTSP is called LTSP5
16:37
<markit>
mmm will create some confusion, since "ltsp" is the generic name for ltsp5 so far, OMHO
16:38
<alkisg>
The new ltsp is just a new, rewritten version of the old ltsp
16:38
<markit>
but I just asked to give my notes (.odt) file a proper name :)
16:38
<alkisg>
Anyways, you can name your server however you want, in all versions of ltsp
16:38
If you happen to call it server, or if you put "server" in /etc/hosts, then you can have both thin and fat clients refer to the server with the same name,
16:39
or you can just put the real server hostname in the client /etc/hosts, if you prefer,
16:39
or if you have dns... etc etc
16:39
Nothing hardcoded
16:39
<markit>
great, thanks
16:40
<alkisg>
"server" on the clients refers to the ltsp server in all ltsp versions, and that part is needed for the ssh connection to work
16:40
That's done automatically, it doesn't have to be the server hostname
16:41
<markit>
ah, I see
16:45
<alkisg>
(btw, if the new ltsp was going to be named ltsp20 or ltsp-new or something, then it couldn't be hosted in ltsp.org anymore, a lot of domains, github and launchpad projects etc would need to be changed)
