muppis, really? Because I just installed Ubuntu Server and I'm having a really hard time getting a graphical LTSP setup going

I'm planning to migrate to 12.04... I'm just trying out some new installation on a spare server now... :)

I was surprised how well upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 went. Still got working system after reboot. :) Yep, I got a habit to brake something when even that shouldn't be possbile.

anyone out there using a boot splash screen with LTSP 5 on debian?

Right, so I just installed Edubuntu 12.04... and it went very smoothly... it asked during install if I wanted to install LTSP, it gave a nice warning how installing LTSP would enable a DHCP server (and I don't want that on my network, as I have one)
14:36
So I said "no"
14:37
And it installed LTSP anyways, along with a dhcpd server... it even built a client.

andygraybeal, :D thx
14:59
<andygraybeal>
seems like it would cause you grief to keep track of two separate images.
14:59
i wouldn't want to do that.
14:59
er, well unless one was for development
14:59
but not rolled out ot my users :)
15:05
<dead_inside>
yes ceinig that is possible
15:05
you need to have two seperate images
15:05
<ceinig>
my problem is, after upgrading to ubuntu 12.04, 3 of my clients, sadly the newer ones, reboot after loading vmlinuz and initd.img. no error message to see. all other machines work fine
15:06
<dead_inside>
and configure your dhcp server to point 32bit clients to the 32bit image, and the 64bit clients to the 64bit image
15:06
cant say i have herd of that problem with 12.04
15:06
<ceinig>
dead_inside, ok, is there anywhere a documentation about that?
15:07
<dead_inside>
not that i know of, i just kinda figured it out because we have many different clients here, i can walk you threw it if you want
15:07
<ceinig>
would be nice :)
15:08
<dead_inside>
do you have the two images built?
15:08
or just one

<ceinig>
I just build the amd64, so I have both now
15:11
<dead_inside>
if both images are setup so they should be bootable, then we just need to configure your dhcp server. are you just using dhcpd
15:11
?
15:11
<ceinig>
yes
15:11
<dead_inside>
ok in your /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf
15:12
you should already have a section about next-server and filename, those should be going to your i368 already?
15:13
should be within subnet brakets
15:13
<ceinig>
next-server is commented out
15:14
<dead_inside>
is your dhcp server the tftp server also?
15:14
<ceinig>
yes
15:14
<dead_inside>
ok then you can forget the next server part
15:14
<ceinig>
ok
15:14
<dead_inside>
and give me one sec, i am going to put up a paste bin example of the dhcpd conf
15:14
<ceinig>
ok :)
15:16
<andygraybeal>
ceinig, you migh have another issue with the newer clients! did you disable all that 3d desktop stuff?
15:16
alkisg has a one-liner that will remove that! it's even stored in the bot, but i don't know the command.

15:18
<dead_inside>
ceinig http://pastebin.com/nXcTHUZm
15:19
it will default clients 32bit
15:19
any hosts you put in the group for 64bit will boot your 64bit
15:19
you just need to change the filename to match your chroots
15:19
<andygraybeal>

ceinig, i know this is an issue with 10.04 because of that 3d compiz, and his one-liner disables it -- i don't know if there is a comparable 'thing' for 12.04
15:23
so i could be a little off-base on my suggestion.
15:23
but that is the same exact problem i had - -my new machines didn't work, but my old ones did.. the new ones were trying to display the '3d mode'
15:23
and it's a common problme

is it possible to add a boot option for just one single client?
17:55

like boot a different image? or dual boot off the hard drive
17:55
?
17:56

hm, I need a kernel boot option to workaround a bug on a client

no clue on that

<vmlintu__>
scytheee: yes, where you have your pxelinux.cfg file, just add a file with name 01-00-01-02-03-04-05, where the file name is 01-mac
18:04
the pxe bios asks first for the file using its mac address and if it doesn't get it, it uses the default file
18:06
<scytheee>
vmlintu__ so I just have to put a 01-00-01-02-03-04-05 file into /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg ?
18:06
<vmlintu__>
yes.. just rename the file to match the mac address of the client
18:06
<scytheee>
vmlintu__ nice, thx :)

every Client every hardware boot fine

i always take the image from edubuntu and modifi this for me

Took the ltsp from the Ubuntu distro annd followed the install and build client instrustions
21:23
<boospy>
ok, i've done this with ubuntu 12.04 and it fails to boot
21:23
i don't no why
21:23
but interessting, the Edbuntu image work fine
21:24
<||cw>
filpx01: have you rebuilt the image very many times?
21:24
which any clients active?
21:24
<boospy>
I do not know the differences between the images
21:24
yes i ve done this
21:25
<filpx01>
Same client - thin-client3 -real original name - boots occasionally. Seem if there is no interaction between server and client for hours there is a higher probability of successful boot
21:25
<||cw>
it's possible to run out of disk space doing that, unless you restart all clients after each rebuild
21:26
<boospy>
how to you mean that?
21:27
with what distro to you test this?
21:27
<Hyperbyte>
filpx01, have you looked at the logs? For example, start 'tail -f /var/log/syslog" on the server, and see if any suspicious messages appear when a client boots and gets the error.
21:27
<boospy>
post the error
21:30
<filpx01>
Have rebuilt more times than I can count. The disk issue is one I'll look at. Also the Edbuntu suggestion will be pursued. Collecting additional info. Stand by
21:31
<boospy>
ok, what distro do you use with

. Ubuntu 12.04 is the distro. Nothing in syslog - does not appear to get far enough into the boot to log. Cannot capture (can't figure out how) error as it is on the console just past "loading initrd.img..." Also, just noticed earlier error "plymouthd: ply-terminal.c630: ply_terminal_set_mode: Assertion ... failed"
21:36
<||cw>
boospy: doens't matter. when you rebuild an image, it unlinks the file, but any ndb process that has clients connected will keep the file handles and locks active, making it use disk space
21:37
filpx01: did you turn off splash and quiet on the kernel boot line in your pxe?
21:37
most obvious case is that it can't connect to the server, so while it's at that error state, can you ping it?
21:38
<filpx01>
boopsy, interesting. that could explain the "success" after considerable idle time. Will nbd timeout so the resources can be released?
21:40
cw, connected to the server via ssh at the time the client fires up. removed splash and quiet indefault so I can see terminal output.
21:42
The setup us a pair of virtual machines -virtualbox. 1 server, 1 client. Server has been up 21+ hours and had 2 successful boots, one early today, thesecond 10 hours later.
21:43
successful client boots for clarification
