<alkisg>
championofcyrodi: you're following the path of reinventing a solution similar to LTSP, so I'm sorry but I wouldn't like to spend more time with that... I do like investing time to the open source community in whole where many can benefit, but "private lessons" or "private help in developing custom solutions" is more of a "job" than an "open source-related chat"... I do wish you success with your solution though! :)

alkisg: i understand. And I appreciate your time. I'm really just looking to integrate fat client support for centos 6.5. It is open to community use and i believe the support runs until 2020. The issue I have encountered is that there is no support on k12linux: https://fedorahosted.org/k12linux/wiki/FatClientIntegration

<championofcyrodi>
My developers use a lot of data visualization tools (developing geomesa.org project), and can't be X11 forwarding the 3D UIs they are trying to improve. After some research last night it looks like the limiting factor w/ centos 6 is the kernel version 2.6.32 not having aufs support.
16:44
So I am looking to integrate the aufs2.1-32 build here: http://sourceforge.net/p/aufs/aufs2-standalone/ci/aufs2.1-32/tree/
16:44
which seems to be going well so far :)

alkisg_web: sorry... pretty bad bug jacked up my lightdm session... (password box missing from login screen - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1311316)
18:04
I understand. I'm not really looking for 'help' at this point. You've got me pointed in the right direction with learning about the initramfs. The first time I attempted to help maintain the centos packages for ltsp (a couple weeks back talking w/ vagrantc) i realized i really don't understand the overall architecture of PXElinux->kernel->init[rd].
18:05
Throw aufs on top of that, and I wouldn't be much help at all. Part of my reasoning for starting 'from the ground up' re-inventing the wheel is so that I can understand how the whole thing is supposed to work. If I can get this all together, I would be happy to help as long as I can.

<championofcyrod1>
but the whole process is quite daunting when you go from running ltsp as an end user, to looking at the code in launchpad.
18:12
next may will be my 1 year anniversary using ltsp :)

<championofcyrod1>
well... i guess i'm stuck. the aufs2.1-32 kernel patch for linux/namei.h shows different code in the patch diff than what is in the actual namei.h
20:59
on centos it's like, "2.6.32-431.29.2.el6" and the target kernel on the aufs projects is just for "2.6.32"
21:01
there are 3 patches, "aufs2-kbuild", "aufs2-base" and "proc_map" the kbuild was only slightly off in that there were some additional modules that didnt match the .patch diff. but nothing crazy. the aufs2-base patch however is failing at a hunk regarding splice.h and namei.h, however there are bout 4 or 5 other hunks in that patch that work fine.
21:02
initramfs module i guess wont work either, because there is no support for it in the kernel. like CONFIG_AUFS_FS=[m|y] in the .config
21:03
the good news, is that I have it working by specifying different NFS mounts for /var and /etc... but this requires a seperate NFS for each fat client and is not ideal.
21:04
going to enjoy the weekend and let what i've learned over the past few days marinate with my brain for a while. maybe I'll think of something more clever :|
21:05
because a kernel mod seems outside the scope of a package just providing software to an existing distro.

<vagrantc>
no need for separate NFS mounts, just use tmpfs mounts...
21:30* vagrantc was pretty sure the RedHat support included aufs via the EPEL or something like that?
