<mwalters>
Any advice for getting the gfx on an intel nuc right? Ubuntu 14.04. Shows up 800x600 only when booted ltsp. 14.04 livecd seems to work correctly. Both show the same gfx in system settings > detail (gallium 0.4 llvmpipe)
16:13
the gfx adapter is intel uhd 600 as well
16:18
<quinox>
check /var/log/X.log
16:18
and/or dmesg
16:19
<alkisg>
mwalters: upgrade kernel and xorg? do you have the latest ones available in the chroot, i.e. from 14.04.5, or just on the server?
16:22
<mwalters>
honestly, no idea. looks like 3.13 in the chroot as far as the kernel
16:23
guessing that's not 14.04.5 based on a quick googling
16:23
livecd was definitely 14.04.5
16:23
<alkisg>
mwalters: try updating the chroot then to get 4.4 kernel and the respective xorg. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack ==> those commands in the chroot.
16:24
(or use 18.04 :))
16:24
<mwalters>
That's next on the list ;)
16:24
In-place upgrades scare me, though
16:25* alkisg prefers clean installations every two years, while keeping /home
16:26
<mwalters>
absolutely, unfortunately I inherited this from a couple people who neglected it, badly
16:26
week 3, I still don't know what I don't know ;)
16:27
<alkisg>
That sounds like a perfect opportunity for a clean installation
16:27
That way you don't have to learn what you don't know :)
16:27
!install
16:27
<ltsp>
install: http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation/Ubuntu for Ubuntu, or http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Installation for other distributions
16:28
<alkisg>
Install a new server, slowly migrate things, and do the real switch when it's ready
16:28
<mwalters>
:D... more a matter of I don't know all what lives on our LTSP box
16:28
we're also a non-profit
16:28
so buying new hardware is... well... difficult ;)
16:28
<alkisg>
Nah, any pc will do, and you can move the installation to the old server once you're done
16:29
<mwalters>
oh, I see what you're saying
16:29
dry-run it on commodity hardware, and then wipe the original box
16:29
<alkisg>
Or you could just move your / to /backup, and install to your existing server, if it's not very mission critical and can have 1 hour downtime
16:29
You don't need to wipe, just move / to /backup
16:29
And `cp -a` the new installation
16:31
<mwalters>
I'll need to look into all of that

<vagrantc>
reverse-engineering the mistakes made on a long-neglected system seems more expensive than starting fresh, indeed. :)
16:49
<mwalters>
hah!
