hi all, I have fat clients, some of which need to connect to a VPN using Network Manager. I installed network manager, but it does not manage the device by default as /etc/network/interfaces contains iface eth0 inet manual, presumably so all the LTSP stuff can work properly. any recommendations on how I could do VPN in a fat client environment?

gdi2k: you could google for "how to manually setup vpn without network manager", or you could use AoE
06:35
<gdi2k>
alkisg, it's a bit tricky as it's a Cisco AnyConnect VPN, not openvpn - works fine with NM, but would not know how to configure without - not sure it's possible. Is there some way I can allow NM to control my network card in LTSP? is the AoE setup hard when starting from Ubuntu 12.04?
06:35
<alkisg>
The aoe setup isn't hard if you don't use nbd_swap
06:36
To allow nm to manage a NIC that is used for netbooting, ask in the network manager mailing lists

work_alkisg, the NetworkManager guys say that if the NIC is not in /etc/network/interfaces (which it doesn't in chroot), they should be managed by NM - they are not sure why they are not. anything LTSP-specific going on that would prevent it?

hi all. can anyhelp help me find out why my .xsession-erros file only says open: Permission failed when using the mate desktop?
14:01
clean install and all setup instructions followed correctly
14:32
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, do you have an actual problem, or is it just the error message in the file that's worrying you?
14:38mench has joined IRC (mench!981ae44a@gateway/web/freenode/ip.152.26.228.74)

I have a new LTSP cluster based on Ubuntu 12.04. I am using likewise-open for AD integration. Local accounts log in fine from clients (fat), but AD accounts sucessfully authenticate, then disconnect immediately. Command line ssh to the appserver using AD accounts works fine.
14:41
anyone seen this before?
14:42
<pycoderf>
my problem is i cannot log in
14:43
Hyperbyte: i cannot get any account to login to the mate desktop
14:49
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, but they can log in to other desktops?
14:50
mench, where are their home dirs stored?
14:50
<pycoderf>
Hyperbyte: i only have mate installed
14:51
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, can you ssh to the server using the user's credentials?
14:51
<mench>
Hyperbyte, it seems likewise-open is creating their home dirs under /home/likewise-open/DOMAINNAME/
14:51
<pycoderf>
Hyperbyte: let me try with failsafe xterm
14:52
<Hyperbyte>
mench, I think that's the problem. I've seen LTSP not work before, with home directories in different places than /home/$USER/
14:52
<mench>
interesting, I will see if I can configure likewise to create home dirs in /home/
14:52
<pycoderf>
Hyperbyte: strange. i switched to tty2 and tried to log in but it said incorrect credentials which is untrue
14:52
<Hyperbyte>
mench, I'm not a developer though, so not entirely sure.
14:53
<mench>
Hyperbye, thanks for the tip; I will get back to you
14:54
<Hyperbyte>
mench, I think with home dirs in strange paths, the client has problems creating and mounting the home dir locally on the client. Basically, LTSP just fetches user information from the server. Where the server gets it from (LDAP, NIS, PAM, /etc/passwd, et cetera) doesn't matter at all for LTSP.
14:55
Generally speaking, if ssh works, it's not an auth problem directly, but something after that. Home dirs would be my next guess. But it's a guess.
14:55
pycoderf, that's your problem then. How did you create the LTSP users?
14:56
<mench>
Hyperbyte, I think your intuition may be spot on. Makes sense that the server creates the home dirs (sucessfully) in a strange location, then the client tries to mount from the normal location, finds nothing, and gives up (sends disconnect),
14:57
<Hyperbyte>
mench, if you want, you can just dig through the scripts that mount the home dir, to see what it's doing.
14:58
You might even be able to hack the paths so likewise works... :)
14:58
<pycoderf>
Hyperbyte: on the server itself using adduser.r ight now i only have my user created during server install
14:58
<mench>
Hyperbye, I will have a look and get back to you :)
14:58
<Hyperbyte>
Anyway, LTSP uses plain text scripts. They're in /usr/share/ltsp/ on the client for everything -before- login, and /usr/share/ldm/ on the client for everything -during- login.
14:59
<mench>
Hyperbyte, I will have a look and get back to you :)
15:00
<pycoderf>
Hyperbyte: are you thinking permissions are wrong? if so its a clean install so it would have been out of the box

<pycoderf>
do ym users need to be in a special group? my first few installs never had a problem but this one does
15:05
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, LTSP needs users to be able to log in over ssh.
15:05
If that's not working, then you need to fix that.
15:06
<pycoderf>
well i am using a clean install. did somethign change in the ltsp package since last week?
15:06
<Hyperbyte>
You can find hints in /var/log/auth.log probably. You could try resetting the user's password, you could consult Google, you could ask in #ubuntu.
15:06
<pycoderf>
i tried #ubuntu with no luck same on google.
15:06
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, you don't understand. Whether you can log in to the server via SSH or not, is not LTSP-related.
15:07
Nothing in the LTSP package can prevent or cause you not being able to log in to the server via SSH.
15:07
<pycoderf>
ok in auth.log i see session opened for user <my user id>
15:07
then i see subsystem request fro sftp and then a disconnect
15:08
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, and yet when you log in to the server using a plain ssh client, it's not working?
15:08
<pycoderf>
testing with a new user
15:08
<Hyperbyte>
pycoderf, stop!
15:08
Either answer my questions, or I'm going to do something else.
15:09
Can you log in to the server, using an ssh client, with the users credentials?
15:09
<pycoderf>
i am doing this in two virtual machines. and do no, ending ldm and using plain text does not work
15:09
Hyperbyte: let me try something from another machine
15:09
to test the login
15:10
Hyperbyte: ok normal ssh login works
15:11
<Hyperbyte>
But not from the client?
15:11

correct
15:11

15:13
<ltsp>
ltsp-update-sshkeys: If you changed your server IP, you need to run ltsp-update-sshkeys, and if you're using NBD (Ubuntu) you also need ltsp-update-image afterwards
15:14
<pycoderf>
i tried ltsp-update-sshkeys
15:15
i am looking at the chroot admin account now
15:15
<Hyperbyte>
Did you also run ltsp-update-image afterwards?
15:16

15:19
the man page said a file is created there

I don't have it either. I think the man page might be outdated.

gdi2k: the actual question should be "netbooting requires a manual IP so that NM never breaks the connection, that's why it's in /etc/network/interfaces as manual, does NM support any way to allow VPN over manually configured NICs?"

Hyperbyte, still no luck. I set likewise-open to generate home directories in /home/, but the LTSP client still behaves the same way. Is there a specific log I can look at to see what's going on?

Hyperbyte, I have figured it out! Apparently, the clients dont like it if I login as "domain\\user". I set likewise to assume the default domain, and now it works!

(server) sudo nano /etc/timeouts
