I asked alot of questions on here a couple of weeks ago when buying hardware for debian/ltsp. I've got edubuntus live dvd up and running now just to do the real thing with debian. Thanks to everyone who helped me. Cheers

Hi all.
04:38
In this directory /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg I have the default file and then I have a few other files with acpi=off. The other files are per hardware device, so they are named after the device MAC address.
04:38
But for some reason when the client PXE boots it ONLY picks up the 'default' file and not their MAC specific file, what cold be the reason for this?
04:40
Oh wait! :/
04:41
Fat finger problem i see it now!

I am on a thin client with the server running edubuntu live dvd. Is there a way to see how many resorces the thin client is using?

I will need to buy more thin clients and there is no point spending more than is needed.

I am using edubuntu live dvd to check out ltsp (planing on using debian in the long run). I have got bored of unity so I installed lxde but it doesn't show up in ldm's menu.

<fossala>
And one other question. Is every ones home directory in /home or /opt/ltsp/i386/home ?
11:35
<Hyperbyte>
Regular home dir
11:36
It gets mounted on the client when localapps is enabled
11:37
<fossala>
So I enable local apps but don't list any apps to just be able to access home directories?
11:38
<vagrantc>
for a thin client, you're just logged into the server
11:38
so your home directory is the home directory on the server
11:38
just like all the applications available are the applications installed on the server
11:38
<fossala>
Sorry I think I need to go over all the documentation again/
11:39
<vagrantc>
essentially, the thin client is just another mouse/keyboard/monitor attached to the server.
11:39
<fossala>
Where are applications installed then?
11:39
<vagrantc>
on the server.
11:39
everything is done on the server.
11:39
<fossala>
/usr/local/bin or /opt/ltsp?
11:39
Ok I think I get it now.
11:40
<vagrantc>
pretend you're not using LTSP, and loggin in from the server console ...
11:40
<fossala>
What I thought you did was log into the chroot, my mistake.
11:40
<vagrantc>
it's pretty much the same.
11:40
it's a common misconception
11:40
that said, there are more complicated things such as local apps and fat clients ...
11:40
<fossala>
So is /opt/ltsp only for the kernels, init.d etc ?
11:40
<vagrantc>
but for a typical thin client setup, everything is on the server.
11:41
fossala: just enough of an OS to boot X and log into the server.
11:41
<fossala>
So anyone user on the server can log into a thin client?
11:41
any**
11:42
<vagrantc>
they log into the server *though* the thin client
11:42
*through*
11:42
<fossala>
Yeah, sorry bad wording.
11:43
I think I have some more to read, Its only for my home (were all computer geeks so have alot of pcs) and trying to get my energy bill down.
11:43
Thanks vagrantc
11:43
<vagrantc>
good luck

<dyllan>
hi.
12:47
My syslog file is getting bombarded with these messages: Jun 13 21:43:13 storm-server ldminfod[13187]: connect from 192.168.0.30 (192.168.0.30) <-- the ip address changes but there is approx 2 messages of this kind every second.
12:47
can anyone explain this?
12:51
<vagrantc>
ldminfod is how the thin clients check what languages and sessions are available on the server
12:51
there is the possibility that something else is querying that port expecting some other application to be there
12:52
<dyllan>
hmmm ok
12:53
it seems like every thin client on the network is querying it over and over again.
12:53
<vagrantc>
that seems odd
12:53
<dyllan>
yup, very
12:53
<vagrantc>
it should only query it when the login screen is displayed
12:54
are you using ltsp-cluster?
12:54
<dyllan>
Ahh. Well could one say that WHILE the login screen is being displayed this query will take place? So one that user has logged in the queries from that terminal will stop?
12:54
No ltsp-cluster.
12:55
<vagrantc>
it shouldn't keep requerying
12:55
<dyllan>
Because I rebooted the server this evening which would have kicked the users out of the system and all the terminals are now waiting at the login screen.
12:55
hmmm thats no good then, possibly a bug?
12:57
<vagrantc>
it only calls it in the code once.
12:57
if the X server is failing to initialize, then it might repeat every couple seconds
12:58
what distro and release?
12:58
<dyllan>
Well before i left the office i tested the connection by logging in and it seemed fine, if there was a problem with the X server I dont think it would have gotten that far :/
12:58
Using Ubuntu 11.04
12:59
unless the problem came about after i left.. .
13:03
shit. did a reboot and no difference :(
13:04
<vagrantc>
reboot the server, or the thin clients?
13:04
<dyllan>
server boss
13:07
<vagrantc>
rebooting the server won't stop the thin clients from talking to the server
13:07
you'll need to reboot the thin clients
13:09Gadi (romm@ool-18bbe47a.static.optonline.net) left #ltsp.
13:10
<dyllan>
yea good point, maybe i shouldnt pay too much attention to it, i think its possible that because the thin clients were not shutdown properly when i rebooted the server that they are stuck in limbo.
13:10
so they not at the login screen and they not turned off and maybe that is the cause of this mess.
13:10
i mean i tested a thin client before i left and it worked fine.
13:14
<vagrantc>
hopefully it's as simple as that
13:15
<dyllan>
yea hopefully, tomorrow morning will tell very quickly :\

dyllan: if you reboot the server, the clients may just hang, it's not guaranteed that they'll reach the login screen. So it's not a good method to kick the users. :)
