Hi all, I just tried to build a new client (ltsp-build-client), but the process exits with: ln: creating symbolic link `/dev/fd' to `/proc/self/fd': File exists

how can I proceed after deleting the link?

no, but it happened two times in a row...
03:11
you have to delete the link and restart ltsp-build-client
03:16
<astroboy>
Hmm .. for me 'ltsp-build-client' ends with "W: Failure while installing base packages." and "error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally
03:16
" whether mirrored locally or from CD ..
03:17
At least 'locales' install - cause for previous faliures.
03:20
.. and again. I'm out of here. I'll gave to google the last eroor message. CHeers.

hi, any body who tried lts5
07:14
<sbalneav>
Yup, I'm using it
07:14
<a5benwillis>
morning
07:14
<merphy>
what is the difference between ltsp5 and 4.x
07:15
<sbalneav>
LTSP 4.2 = awesome, LTSP5 = Awesomer
07:15
<merphy>
what do you mean?
07:15
<sbalneav>
Functionally, they're pretty much the same.
07:16
<merphy>
I mean what about hw detection on clients
07:16
<sbalneav>
ltsp5 is built with the distro's bits, ltsp 4.2 uses our bits.
07:16
<merphy>
I mean, sound, usb, etc
07:16andresmujica has left #ltsp
07:17
<sbalneav>
Well, ltsp5 will use the distro's kernel, so if you're talking about either the ubuntu or debian LTSP5, they'll detect whatever those distro's detect.
07:17
<merphy>
what about centos
07:17
some time it does, detect hw
07:17
ok
07:18
<sbalneav>
I don't beleive there's an ltsp5 for centos yet. The Fedora people are still working on their implementation of LTSP5
07:18
<merphy>
I have tried but it was not a good experience
07:19
i am talking about ltsp4.2
07:19
<sbalneav>
What didn't work for you?
07:20
<merphy>
nothing
07:20
specially sound
07:20
<sbalneav>
Did it not DETECT the sound card, or just not set it up?
07:21
<merphy>
not at all
07:21
<sbalneav>
What kind of sound cards do you have?
07:22
<merphy>
ok, what is the best combination ( mean successful) withltsp5, ubunto is a little bit slow.
07:22
<sbalneav>
Ubuntu's fine.
07:22
Off for breakfast, be back in a bit.
07:23
<merphy>
I have a 500 quad xeon server, with 1g ram, fedora works much better than ububntp
07:24
Right now I am working an other proposal of LTS, and want to explore lts5
07:25
what is the added advantage of ltsp5 as compre to ltsp4.2

We don't directly support hard drives in workstations.

You could fiddle with your udev rules a bit on the workstation to make it come up

So, he's wanting to read stuff off the harddrive?
08:09
yep.

11:47
<jammcq>
pastebot.ltsp.org IN CNAME www.ltsp.org
11:47
then, in apache, i've got a redireect
11:48
and a name based virtual host
11:48
<mistik1>
well in the name virtual host it should be simple to setup the proxy

instead of a redirect ?
11:49
<mistik1>
then pastebot.ltsp.org

yes
11:50
as long as the proxy module is loaded into apache it should work
11:51
<jammcq>
hmm, Invalid Command 'ProxyPass'
11:51
do I need to specify it somewhere?
11:52
<mistik1>
yea, I'm not sure how your distro handles loading modules
11:52
I'm all used to just -D PROXY in my startup in gentoo
11:52
<jammcq>
there's a package called 'libapache2-mod-proxy-html' that I can install
11:52
does that sound like it?
11:52
<mistik1>
sec, I should have the section I was playing with

modproxy html is a little different

Hi, what are the debs for ltsp on Etch .. (again) ?
20:13
.. that should be ltsp5 ..
20:18
Aha .. ltsp-client-builder ltsp-server-standalone ltsp-utils
20:19
<cliebow_>
ltsp-server-standalone should provide ltsp-build-client

22:33* vagrantc grins
22:33
<sbalneav>
Hey! I been around.
22:33
:)
22:33* jammcq is building an etch machine right now, to give debian-ltsp-5 a spin
22:34
<bronze>
39
22:34
<vagrantc>
jammcq: oooh. thanks :)
22:35* vagrantc still needs to fix remote syslogging for etch
22:36
<sbalneav>
hmm
22:37
<jammcq>
vagrantc: ogra tells me that the old ltsp-utils package has been included in etch
22:37
this can cause some grief and confusion
22:37
<vagrantc>
jammcq: yes... i was thinking about that the other day ...
22:37
<jammcq>
anything we can do, to yank it out?
22:38
<vagrantc>
jammcq: on the one hand, ltsp5 is still rough enough that maybe people should have both options .... but ... it can sure lead to confusion.
22:38
<jammcq>
true-nuff
22:38
<sbalneav>
This sucks. In order to test LTSP, I need to have a static IP address. Which means, unless I figure out a way to get it to IGNORE my wired interface, I have to ditch network manager. Which I'd like not to do, as it works REALLY well for the wireless interface.
22:38
<jammcq>
ogra suggested creating a 'package conflict'
22:38
<vagrantc>
maybe we should just put a conflicts on ltsp-server ... so they can't have both installed at the same time.
22:39
although, it's actually possible to have both live side-by-side since ltsp 4.2 installs to /opt/ltsp-4.2 instead of /opt/ltsp ....
22:39
but i don't really know what all ltspadmin does to know what other harmful effects it might have
22:43
<jammcq>
well, I know a little bit about it
22:43
<vagrantc>
you think?
22:43
<jammcq>
I used to know more, that's for sure
22:44J45p3r has quit IRC
22:44
<vagrantc>
what all does it do? it checks for some services running, it tweaks some configuration files, it builds the /opt/ltsp* stuff .... anything wrong or additional (or more specific) ?
22:45
<jammcq>
well, first off, there's 2 parts. ltspadmin and ltspcfg
22:45
ltspadmin takes care of installing the tree (/opt/ltsp/i386)
22:45
then, it calls ltspcfg to deal with the system config, like nfs, tftp, dhcp
22:46
ltspcfg shouldn't disrupt too much stuff. the only real problem is if both ltspadmin and ltsp-build-client try to put things in the same directory
22:46
<vagrantc>
i thought ltsp 4.2 put things in /opt/ltsp-4.2 ... ?
22:46
<jammcq>
ltspadmin checks to see if there's already a /opt/ltsp, and if there is, it installs to a different directory
22:46
but on a new system, it goes for /opt/ltsp
22:46
<vagrantc>
ahhh...
22:47
<jammcq>
at least the one that I wrote does
22:47
it's possible somebody has modified it
22:47
<vagrantc>
so, if you install ltsp 4.x first, and then ltsp 5, you have problems ...
22:47
<jammcq>
yepper
22:47
<vagrantc>
but the other way around should work fine...
22:47
hmmm...
22:48
i imagine the dhcp and tftp and possibly nfs configuration will be incompatible...
22:49
<jammcq>
nfs shouldn't be a problem
22:49
it just exports /opt/ltsp
22:49
that would work for either
22:49
dhcp, it only creates a sample file, it doesn't disrupt the current configuration
22:50
<vagrantc>
ah... ok.
22:50
tftp ... ?
22:52
<jammcq>
well, for tftp, it's gonna try and change it to use /tftpboot
22:52
<vagrantc>
so that'll break.
22:54
<jammcq>
yeah, might be breakage
22:54
do you know who's maintaining ltsp-utils for debian?
22:54
<vagrantc>
i was actually contacted by the maintainer at some point ... i think i will file a bug on both packages suggesting a conflict
22:54
<astroboy>
.. I've just put in clean Etch install - reformatted everything .. and am confused whether to proceed with ltspadmin or ltsp-build-client ..
22:55
<vagrantc>
astroboy: if you want ltsp5, use ltsp-build-client . if you want ltsp 4.x use ltspadmin.
22:55
<jammcq>
hmm, well, you gotta pick one or the other
22:55
<vagrantc>
yeah, we should almost certainly conflict.
22:56
<astroboy>
OK. I'll go with ltsp-build-client .. but does ltspcfg have a continuing role in configuration ?
22:56
<vagrantc>
not with ltsp5.
22:56
<astroboy>
Claro ..
22:56
<vagrantc>
it might break things.
22:56
si.
