<alkisg>
!nfs-home
15:24
<ltsp>
Error: "nfs-home" is not a valid command.
15:24
<alkisg>
!nfs
15:24
<ltsp>
nfs: to enable NFS home directories for localapps and fat clients, install nfs-kernel-server on your server, nfs-common on your client (don't forget ltsp-update-image), and put this in lts.conf: FSTAB_1="server:/home /home nfs defaults,nolock 0 0"

<mwalters>
curious, why would you want to use nfs vs fuse/sshfs?
15:28
<quinox>
it's faster than sshfs
15:29
<mwalters>
I'm assuming there's a caveat if it's not the default method of mounting?
15:33
<alkisg>
NFS is faster and can work on a different server
15:33
SSHFS is safer with an easier setup
15:33
NFS can be safe, but it requires more complicated setup for the "safe" part
15:33
(someone in the list asked about it, and I wanted to paste the command for him)
15:34
<quinox>
how would you make it safe?
15:35
<alkisg>
NFS v4 supports encryption and authentication and stuff
15:35
<quinox>
ooh
15:35
<alkisg>
I think it even supports kerberos and various other things; personally I haven't done any of those, here we prefer faster/unsafer, as we have lots of old hardware
15:36
So when it's a matter of "working" vs "not working"... safety unfortunately comes second
15:36
<quinox>
yeah unsafe is fine for me too, almost all of my users are sudo on the server anyway
15:36* alkisg would love to have the NULL cipher for sshfs, which would be easy to setup AND fast
15:36
<alkisg>
But the ssh devs don't ship it for safety reasons
15:37* alkisg waves for now, later...
15:39
<mwalters>
looks like out of the box, v4 only supports encrypting the authentication transaction, and not everything else
15:40
this is going to be a fun rabbithole
15:43
I wonder if it's actually still faster after getting all the encryption stuffs up and running
15:43
but yeah, for us, we deal with a lot of personal and health information... safety is always first ;)
15:48
<quinox>
SSHFS works just fine

16:19
<quinox>
it's not slow... it's just that NFS is faster
17:07
<||cw>
I'd expect performance on fully encrypted nfs to be similar to sshfs, but with better posix behaviors
