greetings, wondering if there is a way to selectively add more / less nbd swap space to selected thin clients based on MAC address

<TheProf>
Good day. I hope everyone is doing well. I had a question about thin client architecture please -- does i386 vs amd64 matter if the server is running 64 bit? The thin client hardware is 64 bit but the default image served from the Edubuntu new install is 32 bit and I do not know how to change it to 64 bit. Thank you

<gdi2k>
I completely borked my ltsp install and need to move to a new server. Can I copy all my /opt/ltsp directory after install ltsp-standalone on the new server and things should work? anything else I am missing (aside from the lts.conf stuff etc.)?
03:49
<TheProf>
gdi2k: Hello. I'm not at all an expert - I'm just waiting to see if someone can help with my previously-stated question. I can tell you that I have been in your situation and I did a clean installation of LTSP and only needed to modify lts.conf to what it was and everything else worked.
03:49
<gdi2k>
TheProf, yes, I'm busy rebuilding everything now
03:50
TheProf, the architecture does not matter unless your clients have lots of RAM

03:51
<gdi2k>
just checking where the setting is - google ltsp-build-client.conf
03:51
<TheProf>
gdi2k: Thanks for looking at my question -- my thin clients have about 3 or 4 GB of ram. At some point I wanted to convert them to thick/fat/whatever the correct term is so I wondered if it mattered.
03:52
<gdi2k>
we have fast client machines and run them on 64 bit as fat clients
03:52
best thing we ever die
03:52
*did
03:52
but client machines have to be fast. Ours are newish Ivy Bridge machines, so it's fine
03:52
Celeron G1620s mostly running Xubuntu
03:53
<TheProf>
gdi2k: Ours are very capable machines -- core 2 duo machines
03:53
<gdi2k>
should be good running fat clients
03:53
no trouble with multimedia, audio, server load etc. that you have with thin clients
03:54
<TheProf>
Is it fat or thick or some other term I should be Googling?
03:54
<gdi2k>
fat
03:54
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients
03:54
not sure which OS you're on, that's for buntu family
03:55
<TheProf>
Great thank you. I'm using Edubuntu

<TheProf>
gdi2k: so I just checked and I don't have ltsp-build-client.conf on my installation
04:08
Is it necessary to create the 64-bit images?
04:08
<gdi2k>
TheProf, yes, it's not there by default you have to create it. check out the fat client install guide, it tells you how to create it and what you can place inside
04:08
I believe so
04:08
actually, no, you can specify it as part of the ltsp-build-image command as an option
04:08
<TheProf>
OK - if I just want to create the thin client images for now as 64 bit do I need that file?
04:08
<gdi2k>
or you can place all your options in that file
04:08
<TheProf>
OK.
04:09
<gdi2k>
it's ltsp-build-client
04:09
not image
04:10
ltsp-build-client --dist amd64
04:10
<TheProf>
OK I'll try it out now.
04:11
<gdi2k>
hmm, no I think that's the distribution, not arch
04:11
ltsp-build-client --arch md64
04:11
man ltsp-build-client

04:44

alkisg, I was talking yesterday with vagrantc about screen locking. he said ltsp 5.5.2 and ldm 2.2.1 contain the LDM_PASSWORD_HASH function, which makes pam work enough for screenlockers. Ubuntu 14.04 ships with ltsp 5.5.1, but he said it may (or may not) be a simple rebuild on launchpad to get these versions built. do you think it's possible? if not, is it relatively easy to backport?

gdi2k: you can go about it a couple ways. Either download your own version of the updated source, and compile it, or branch the current code base and then generate your own ppa from it, or you can use one of the ppas that already uses the latest source

alkisg, bennabiy thanks, will look into these options and see what works for me. ppa route looks like it may be time consuming due to having to sign a code of conduct or something

16:18
do you know of any ppa that has updated packages?

alkisg: Thank you for the clarification -- we don't do much of that at the elementary level so I will leave it defaulted to 32 bit. It was just a weird error that it would fail on whenever I tried to build the 64 bit image.
16:18
<bennabiy>
