<Q-FUNK>
seems that Ubuntu just left us. starting with Maverick, libc6 is compiled for i686. as a result, Geodes and older processors typically used on LTSP clients won't be supported.
10:02
stgraber: please tell me that doko is joking on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eglibc/+bug/587186

<johnny>
Q-FUNK, how long did you expect them to keep that?
12:27
fedora has done the same
12:29
<Q-FUNK>
johnny: and how does the fact that fedora did it make it right?
12:29
<johnny>
didn't say it did
12:29
only that things are moving away from i586
12:29
<Q-FUNK>
the jump was straight from 486 to 686
12:30
586 would actually remain usable

<johnny>
i have a feeling it's not a oke
12:30
joke
12:30
Q-FUNK, perhaps it means that sbalneav's idea of a more minimal distro for chroots might be a good idea
12:31
or just using plain debian perhaps..
12:32
<Q-FUNK>
might as well orphan the whole LTSP project
12:34
<johnny>
i have a feeling that the required drivers won't be maintained upstream in the kernel at some point for such things in the next few years anyways
12:34
<Q-FUNK>
which drivers?
12:34
<johnny>
most especially in the graphics area
12:34
somebody has already ported them to kms?
12:35
<Q-FUNK>
depends. amd recently assigned a new team to that and former OLPC guys recently became generic Geode developers.
12:35
<johnny>
ah, well that's better news than i expected
12:35
the drivers sounded pretty orphaned..
12:35
<Q-FUNK>
well, KMS is low-priority. it's a nice feature but it's not the end of the world either.
12:35
naa
12:35
<johnny>
until X requires it
12:36
in any case.. i doubt they have much more than a year or 2 of life left
12:36
<Q-FUNK>
the driver simply became low-maintenance once all goals had been reached.
12:36
KMS and merging support for older geodes were just nice to have
12:37
<johnny>
perhaps a survey should be done to prove your point
12:37
for how many people actually require i586
12:37
none of my clients do
12:37
none of freegeek's do
12:37
none of the many other larger installs around here do either
12:37
<Q-FUNK>
thin clients?
12:37
<johnny>
yes
12:38
i just think you might be overstating the "orphaning of the ltsp project"
12:38
<Q-FUNK>
most thin client hardware out there uses soome geode variant and they are all 586
12:38
<johnny>
but.. numbers could prove me wrong
12:39
tons of people use repurposed desktop computers, which are almost all 686

<rhodan>
Hi, I'm looking for a distributed storage solution.
13:58
I want a fistful of clients to boot over the net and have caches.
13:58
But the caches should be served, too. Like a meshed RAID over Ethernet.
13:59
GlusterFS could do that, but it would lack the dynamic component. The system should be able to cope with all clients shut down and only one server standing, too.
13:59
Also, GlusterFS doesn't provide security mechanisms.
14:00
AFS has Kerberos and encryption, but the caches are private.
