hi, im planning on upgrading my ltsp running ubuntu 10,04 to ubuntu 11,04, however im concerned about ltsp on unity, can you give me an advice please?
14:54
<TheMatrix3000>
it just prompts you that unity can't run on the system
14:54
<lutan>
what do you mean?
14:55
<Hyperbyte>
lutan, he means that Unity won't run. If you configure 11.04 to use Unity, it'll say the hardware is not supported.

so i have to install gnome 3?, what about kde?

14:58
<Hyperbyte>
Why do you have to install Gnome 3?
14:58
<highvoltage>
lutan: in gnome 3 you still have the fallback mode which provides you with a very similar interface to the gnome 2 desktop
14:59
<lutan>
no, i just want to know what is working for 11,04. I really like 10,04 behavior
15:00
<Hyperbyte>
11.04 doesn't have Gnome 3, it has 2.32.1
15:00
<highvoltage>
I haven't used unity on ltsp in production yet, but with just testing it it worked fine for me
15:01
<lutan>
alright, then gnome 2 it is. what about kde support?
15:01
<Hyperbyte>
Not by default, anyways.

Hi, I have a question about LTSP. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, installed LTSP, have my clients booting diskless. My problem is the clients all share the same hostname as the server. Is there any way to set that? I've tried adding "hostname = x" to lts.conf, but no joy
15:20staffencasa has joined IRC (staffencasa!~staffenca@128-193-150-254.oregonstate.edu)
15:20
<jfisher>
The end goal is to target firefox's home page to groups of computers
15:20
so group A gets site A, B gets B, and so on
15:22
<Hyperbyte>
jfisher, how have you determined they have the same hostname as the server?
15:22
<jfisher>
open a terminal session and type 'hostname'
15:22
it echos the same hostname as the server
15:22
<Hyperbyte>
You do realize that everything on a diskless client runs on the server?
15:23
The terminal session you opened and the 'hostname' command.... all executed on the server
15:23nosedrum has joined IRC (nosedrum!~quassel@92.103.117.4)
15:23
<Hyperbyte>
So naturally that returns the hostname of the server. :)
15:23
<jfisher>
That's what I figured, but wasn't sure. My googling found some info about setting hostnames, but I think that may be for a thin client ramdisk setup or something...
15:24
So is there any way that you can think of to achieve the end goal with targeted web pages?
15:24
<Hyperbyte>
You can use the command ltsp-localapps to start a program on the server
15:24
For example, type ltsp-localapps xterm in a terminal
15:25
You'll get an xterm running on the client, where you can see they do indeed have different hostnames.
15:25alexqwesa__ has joined IRC (alexqwesa__!~alex@109.172.15.11)
15:26
<Hyperbyte>
This doesn't actually solve your problem though, but it's useful knowledge to know how to get a local xterm.
15:26alexqwesa_ has left IRC (alexqwesa_!~alex@alexo-veto.broker.freenet6.net, Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
15:26
<Hyperbyte>
Since Firefox is still running on the server, it uses the server's hostname and server's IP address
15:26
<jfisher>
ah neat! just tried it
15:26
<Hyperbyte>
But, you could run Firefox as a localapp too - ltsp-localapps firefox
15:27
<jfisher>
that command doesn't appear to execute
15:27
ltsp-localapps xterm did though
15:27
<Hyperbyte>
See if firefox is installed on the client. Go back to the local xterm and type 'firefox'
15:27
<jfisher>
command not found
15:28
<Hyperbyte>
!install-localapp | echo jfisher
15:28
<ltsp>
jfisher install-localapp: (#1) To install an application locally on the client, in the chroot environment, use this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/GuiInstallLocalApp For non-graphical installations, you can skip steps 1 and 2., or (#2) To install an application locally on the client, in the chroot environment, use this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/GuiInstallLocalApp (1 more message)
15:28
<Hyperbyte>
It needs to !forget one of these two
15:29
<jfisher>
Cool, I'll bounce around those wiki pages some more. Thanks for the info! :)
15:29
<Hyperbyte>
But that's how you install localapps. Keep in the mind the applications are running on the client though, on the client's hardware. If your clients don't have the RAM to support Firefox as a localapp, you'll run into problems.

<jfisher>
Thankfully we've inherited quite overpowered computers for these, so I'm sure we'll be okay there. Nothing <512MB
15:30
<Hyperbyte>
Also, it'll run with everything available on the clients. The entire filesystem of the server will be not be available (although the users' home directory -is- mounted)... also things like flashplayer will need to be installed on the client if you want that.
15:30dobber has left IRC (dobber!~dobber@213.169.45.222, Remote host closed the connection)
15:30
<jfisher>
I see
15:30
so do people run into problems sharing the server's IP for web browsing?
15:31
<Hyperbyte>
Why would they?
15:31
<jfisher>
these are intended to be web kiosks
15:31
If some web site handles logins via IP for example
15:31
after authing, it assumes IP x is logged in
15:31
<Hyperbyte>
Well, yeah... but that would be really bad websites. :)
15:31
<jfisher>
as I say this I realize that's not likely
15:31
yeah
15:31
<Hyperbyte>
Think proxy....
15:31
:)
15:31
<jfisher>
no different than someone behind a NAT
15:32
excellent, well thanks again! :)
15:32
<Hyperbyte>
One more thing
15:32
If the localapps thing doesn't work for you somehow, you could always do some form of detection server-side.
15:32
<jfisher>
how would that work?
15:33
<Hyperbyte>
Well, are you using a local web application?
15:33
Or is it for browsing everything?
15:33
<jfisher>
browsing everything
15:33
we'd like them targeted to specific public facing departmental websites
15:34
<Hyperbyte>
Basically, you want a different homepage per client, or something? Or?
15:34
<jfisher>
well groups of clients, but yeah
15:34
so one group would get, say, google, whereas another group would get yahoo
15:34
<Hyperbyte>
Well, this is a bit hacky
15:35
But any variable you set in lts.conf, becomes a global variable on the client.
15:35
For example, type 'export' in your local xterm
15:36
You could configure per-mac-address homepage variable in lts.conf I think, and then create a startup script for the client that launches Firefox with that page
15:36gnunux has left IRC (gnunux!~emmanuel@194.167.18.244, Quit: Ex-Chat)
15:38
<jfisher>
is there a homepage variable in lts.conf?
15:39
I didn't see one in the man page i found
15:39
<Hyperbyte>
I think you can put your own variables in there, but I'm not sure.
15:39
<jfisher>
Alright, well I'll check that out as well. Thanks for the pointers! :)
15:40
<Hyperbyte>
Else you could use the RCFILE_ variables probably
15:40
Probably best even
15:40
:)
15:41
<jfisher>
Cool, well I've got plenty to google on and kludge with now. Thnx! :)
