<gdi2k__>
alkisg, I already have that, but I want to give the user a choice about which server to boot to during the boot process, giving us a degree of redundancy. Everyone running off a single server is giving me sleepless nights. With iPXE I could automatically fail over to the second server if the first fails, plus a lot of other nice things (like send client to lowest loaded server).
08:48
<alkisg>
gdi2k__: yeah dhcp does that too
08:48
No need for ipxe
08:48
<gdi2k__>
that would be ideal
08:49
<alkisg>
There's even dhcp failover if needed, but since it's just 1 command away, I don't bother with it
08:49
<gdi2k__>
any docs for that? I can't see how it would be done with dhcp
08:49
<alkisg>
pxe menus are really easy to set up
08:49
How do you currently decide the server with the lower load?
08:50
<gdi2k__>
I don't yet
08:50
my set up is like this:
08:50
<alkisg>
Anyways, there are several ways to do it, either with dnsmasq dhcp scripts or with pxelinux scripting
08:50
<gdi2k__>
I have two firewalls (failover with CARP) which runs DHCP - it sends the clients to the LTSP server to boot. What I would like is for it to send to two LTSP servers, unless one is down
08:51
in a round robin or similar fashion
08:51
static allocation by MAC would be fine too
08:52
<alkisg>
That's very easy, you just put that in your dhcp configuration
08:52
Specify tftp server (next-server) based on MAC...
08:53
<gdi2k__>
but if one server is down, how would it tell clients to use the other?
08:53
<alkisg>
Then static allocation isn't fine
08:53
That's when you need dnsmasq dhcp scripts or pxelinux scripting
08:54
You can also have proxydhcp instead
08:54
So that if a proxy is down, the other would answer...
08:54
<gdi2k__>
static in terms of "server 1 is priority for PC1 - 10, server 2 is priority for the rest, but both should fail over to one another"
08:55
<alkisg>
!proxydhcp
08:55
<ltsp>
proxydhcp: A proxy DHCP server is defined by the PXE specification as a server which sends auxiliary boot information to clients, like the boot filename, tftp server or rootpath, but leaves the task of IP leasing to the normal DHCP server. More info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP

08:58
<alkisg>
With 2 proxydhcp servers and a real dhcp server and 2 PXE menus to allow the users to "force select" a specific server I think you're fine
08:58
<gdi2k__>
"Adjusting pxelinux.cfg/default for Ubuntu 8.04 - 9.10" is that still applicable to to 12.04
08:58
yes, that sounds like a plan - just starting to get my head around it...
08:59
<alkisg>

08:59
<gdi2k__>

alkisg, so on the main DHCP server, what is the config? No boot info is given out by it? How do the clients know where to find ProxyDHCP - I'm missing something in the logic
09:08
<alkisg>
dhcp requests are broadcasted
09:09
So all proxydhcp servers reply
09:09
<gdi2k__>
ah - so they get the lease from DHCP and the other bits from proxydhcp
09:09
<alkisg>
Yup
09:09

<gdi2k__>
alkisg, at the end it gives "error socket failed" - nbd seems to be the issue
10:51
<alkisg>
gdi2k__: eth0 configured at...
10:51
The first entry there is the client IP address, the second is the server
10:51
Is that the correct IP for the nbd server?
10:52
<gdi2k__>
alkisg, no, the second is actually the DHCP server
10:52
the third is the gateway
10:52

<gdi2k__>
so most likely something is wrong with my /etc/dnsmasq.d/ltsp.conf ?
10:56
I'm a bit lost on the logic here - at that point in the boot, it is requesting a DHCP lease, which the DHCP server is giving - why would it give the IP of the LTSP server?
11:01
<alkisg>
At that point *proxydhcp* requests are not considered at all
11:01
That's why you need ipappend 3

alkisg, ok thank you! :) the issue was that I followed the instruction under "Adjusting pxelinux.cfg/default for Ubuntu 12.04" - it adds ipappend 3 to the end of the file, but the last item in the menu is memtest, not pxelinux, so ipappend 3 is added to the wrong item. After fixing that, it works :) - now I just have to add menu items

alkisg are you familiar with a hot failover LTSP configuration?
20:09
<alkisg>
DannyCan: you can do that for dns, dhcp, even for /home, but not for running applications (sessions)
20:09
So it can only work after logoff/login
