Hi, I'm using a 32bit LTSP client to connect to an AMD64 server under Ubuntu (Jaunty). When I browse to certain websites that use Flash in Firefox on the client the connection seems to get dropped (I'm using the adobe flash plugin). (Mouse moves on the client but can't interact with windows etc.) I have to reset the machine to make progress. Any ideas what the cause could be or how to fix?

anyone know how to upgrade chroot in 9.04? I have been to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/UpdatingChroot
11:56
<johnny>
most people don't upgrade chroots
11:56
unless they have customizations in there
11:56
<atomic007za>
which helped me ungrade the i386 version but now running a 64 bit.
11:56
hi Jonny
11:56
<johnny>
they just scratch it and start over
11:57
<atomic007za>
is it not good practice to do this?
11:57
as updates come out and does not get forwarded to the ltsp client?
11:57
<johnny>
Note for upgrading across releases: If you have upgraded the LTSP server to a new release (such as Hardy -> Intrepid), it is recommended to build a new client chroot from scratch (you must also re-install any packages you had installed previously.), as the ltsp-build-client script does things a normal apt-get upgrade will not. You can do this (including a backup) by following commands:
11:57
that is what it says right in that document
11:58
you do need to use --arch i386 to build it for 32bit tho

11:59
<atomic007za>
I am using the 64 bit, would it be --arch 64?
11:59
<johnny>
for clients?
12:00
if you're using 64bit clients you don't have to add any options
12:00
it inherits whatever the arch is.. on ubuntu
12:00
<atomic007za>
no, they are still i386
12:00
<johnny>
then use --arch i386
12:00
<atomic007za>
will do thanks
12:00
<johnny>
other distros default to i386, so you don't have to type anything
12:00
not sure why ubuntu doesn't
12:00
<atomic007za>
cool, thanks alot
12:01
<vagrantc>
debian doesn't default to i386
12:01
<johnny>
oh.. sadness
12:01
<vagrantc>
and maybe ubuntu inherrited it
12:01
<johnny>
yeah.. that's probably it
12:01
<atomic007za>
hi vagrantc
12:01
<vagrantc>
well, as soon as i defaulted amd64 to i386, i got bug reports that it was unexpected behavior
12:01
<johnny>
from the rare people who build for 64bit thinclients? :)
12:02
<vagrantc>
which, admittedly, the leasy surprising default is to default to whatever you're using
12:02
<johnny>
vagrantc, perhaps therer shouldn't be any default :)
12:02
<vagrantc>
johnny: well, not everyone who uses LTSP strictly uses it for thin clients
12:02
<johnny>
how will they feel then :)
12:02
<atomic007za>
I wanted to say thanks, for the help with the backup the other day,
12:02* alkisg wonders how many bug reports would be needed for the opposite to be default :)
12:02* vagrantc waves to atomic007za
12:03
<vagrantc>
alkisg: yeah.
12:03
<johnny>
fasaxc, you might want to try using the real 64bit flash plugin and not the nspluginwrapper
12:03
<vagrantc>
i think also, the simplest code was to default to the same default.
12:03
same arch
12:03
<johnny>
fasaxc, try installing the 64bit version and then apt-get remove nspluginwrapper
12:03
<vagrantc>
so i was tempted by simple code, too :)
12:04
<johnny>
vagrantc, sure.. but i don't design for the experts..
12:04
<fasaxc>
johnny, I think I am using flash 64bit, I'll just check
12:04
<johnny>
fasaxc, it's not default
12:05
since last i checked..it's still in beta
12:08
<fasaxc>
yes I have the 64bit one installed, I had to install it manually from adobe
12:09
<johnny>
weird
12:09
i haven't had any problems
12:09
but perhaps that is why it is in beta
12:09
:)
12:09
perhaps try the origiinal then
12:10
fasaxc, it's not our fault flash sucks so bad
12:10
altho of course we do have problems with our own apps like OOo..
12:11
<fasaxc>
hehe, I know, but on the face of it I don't think Flash should be able to take down a session. Sure, I can see it crashing Firefox maybe but surely it shouldn't be able to take down the whole session?
12:12
<johnny>
depends on why.. some things we just can't do anything about
12:16
<fasaxc>
it seems like the X server on the client is still running (since I can move the mouse and it changes depending on what it's over) but I see a bunch of errors in the xsession-errors log saying "Connection reset by peer" and others suggesting the connection has gone down. Is that a typical failure mode when something goes wrong in LTSP?

Hi,
14:03
I just set up a LTSP server running Ubuntu Jaunty.
14:04
I'm using another DCHP server using the next-server directive. My clients boot to the login screen, but I can't log in using the username and password info I know is correct.
14:05
<alkisg>
lfaraone: try: sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys; sudo ltsp-update-image
14:06
...and then reboot the client

sure.. use vnc..
15:19

16:02* alkisg wonders if freenx could turn ancient windows 95 PCs (16 RAM etc) into terminals...
16:04
<johnny>
probably won't run on win95..
16:04
all software that can run win95 is disappearing
16:04
but possibly
16:04
if you ran a micro linux distro
16:04
micro micro micro
16:04
but i don't know.. probably not
16:06
<wietze>
what are the minimum requirements for X nowadays? :)
16:07
<alkisg>
The only distro I ever saw able to boot some tiny X server with 16 ram is deli linux - but then again I'm new to linux so I haven't seen any really old distros
16:10
<wietze>
I run X on a psion 5mx which has 16mb ram and a 36mhz arm proc
16:11
but thats not an 1.6 :(
16:13
did anyone here try that google code?
16:13
<alkisg>
Hmmm there's a neatx release in the freenx PPA (ubuntu): https://launchpad.net/~freenx-team/+archive/ppa
16:15
"Backport to karmic" ???? backported from what, ubuntu 10.04??? !!!
16:18
<johnny>
from karmic+1 :)

17:47
don't know if i should go to 10 first
17:48
<Ryan52>
monteslu: should be the as any fedora. which I don't know.
17:50
<johnny>
monteslu, if you wait a bit longer you can upgrade to 12 :)
18:07
<monteslu>
johnny, I've broken upgrades just going one version. No way going 3 will work :)
18:08
<johnny>
you need to go one at a time
18:08
i think
18:08
9 to 10 to 11 to 12
18:08
not 9 - 12
18:11
<monteslu>
ahh, ok. I'll give that a shot. Kinda worried about breaking ltsp with it.
18:11
Wish RH would release EL 6 so i could run a centos 6 based version and not have to upgrade so often
18:19
<johnny>
every 6 months doesn't seem so often :)
18:22
<monteslu>
i just upgrade the school every 12 months, and it seems to come too quickly
18:23
at home I'm always on the latest fedora though :)
