When do I launch "ltsp-client-launch" on Fedora ?
07:47
I have tried to setup "rc.local" but that do not work. (I'm on fedora 19)
07:48
I have tried to set it as a kernel param. That do not work either.

i know it might not be new, but still, is there any comprehensive manual for installing LTSP 5 on centos 6 systems, since i found only basics like install ltsp-server? I've found pretty good one for 4th version,but its outdated.
09:28
and official docs are not faint of heart iether. Only basics. I dont pretend for full guide of course.

hey every body, i got some caching problems with ltspfs. it does show old files on an usb-device, after I format it, I looks for like the LTSP-Server is caching this some how (and says that there is no more spaces on the devices, what is not true since "not thinclient" maschienes say that there is plenty of space)?

alkisg, hi
15:09
<alkisg>
Hi willianmazzardo, how are you?
15:14
<willianmazzardo>
nice … but the printers still unstable
15:14
some times work, some other no :S
15:14
even cups pfd
15:14
pdf
15:15
JUST into WINE ambient :S
15:15
<alkisg>
Wait wait
15:15
CUPS pdf ==> do you mean that printing without wine is also unstable?
15:15
<willianmazzardo>
no .. without wine is Ok
15:16
<alkisg>
And, with wine but without LTSP, is it stable? Have you tried it enough to make sure?
15:16
<willianmazzardo>
I was thinking about get CUPS printer LOCALLY for every client
15:16
<alkisg>
Because if wine printing in general isn't very stable... then you can't fix it from ltsp...
15:16
<willianmazzardo>
yes … without ltsp, in wine is Ok

<alkisg>
OK you could also try with local cupsd, instead of server-side cupsd
15:18
<willianmazzardo>
ok
15:18
<alkisg>
I.e. install cupsd in the chroot, define CUPS_SERVER=localhost in lts.conf, and make sure that the printer is installed in the chroot

<TFDL>
Good morning all,
15:21
on my thin client after issue command ltsp-localapps xterm
15:22
in this xterm i do ifconfig command but it show command not found.
15:23
<alkisg>
try /sbin/ifconfig
15:23
You probably don't have /sbin in your path...
15:23
<TFDL>
so i then do su administrator it shows Unknown id, i know i do have administrator user. What did id do wrong please.
15:23
thanks alkisq!
15:24
<alkisg>
You don't have an administrator user locally on the client
15:24
The client only has the logged in user
15:24
<TFDL>
it works alkisg with this /sbin/ifconfig
15:25
can you please show me how to create administrator user for thin client alkisg?
15:27
<alkisg>
TFDL: say what you really want to do, because you're going the wrong way for it
15:27
I.e. why do you want a local administrator user? etc
15:27
<TFDL>
ok, here is the background,
15:28
i have a php webapp, that will display contents depending on the ip address of the thin client.
15:28
that is all.
15:28
some how the ip address is not picked properly.
15:29
this php application is now running on ffox on thin client.
15:29
i think i need to install firefox as local app?
15:29
then would that resolve my problem alkisg?
15:30
<alkisg>
TFDL: you just need to pass the IP address of the client, which is stored in $LTSP_CLIENT
15:30
No need for a local app at all, you just need a launcher
15:30
bbiab
15:31
<willianmazzardo>
alkisg, ive changed the name from i386-fat to i386, but now when clients bootup, an error occurr INITRAMFS something
15:32
what do im missing?
15:33
<TFDL>
where is $LTSP_CLIENT?
15:34
!bbiab
15:34
<ltsp`>
Error: "bbiab" is not a valid command.
15:34
<TFDL>
what is bbiab?
15:34
thanks alkisg
15:36
<alkisg>
willianmazzardo: vnc?
15:36
TFDL: bbiab means "be back in a bit"
15:37
$LTSP_CLIENT is an environment variable, you would put that in a launcher (.desktop file) that would open the .php page you want with the IP as a parameter
15:37
<TFDL>
i will wait. thanks alkisg!
15:37
<alkisg>
TFDL: I am back now... wait for what? :)
15:38
<TFDL>
this is really extra question but we need it just as bad.
15:39
on our thin client machine, there is an indicator light.
15:39
it can trigger red or green
15:39
via a serial port.
15:39
within thin client image, how can i do this.
15:39
i am only asking for direction
15:39
pointer,
15:40
and i will do it
15:40
some say use serial-python
15:40
library to transmit a hex to device
15:40
i agree with them
15:41
i can try on a normal ubuntu machine
15:41
but how can i bring that to ltsp image?
15:41
thanks alkisg
15:42
<alkisg>
willianmazzardo: pxelinux.cfg/default was wrong, it contained "fat" there, try rebooting a client now
15:42
<willianmazzardo>
ok
15:42
<alkisg>
TFDL: ltsp-localapps python-app-for-light on/off
15:43
If you only need to send something to a serial port, you can even do that with shell (bash)
15:44
<TFDL>
you are right that you know my requirement. i only want to send and not receive.
15:44
all we want is turn the light red or green.
15:45
that is so cool, alkisg. thanks again as usual.
15:45
<alkisg>
You're welcome
15:47
<TFDL>
i will go and find the info on the internet, now that i have direction. that i believe i will get what i want from. it has been so successful and with teh epoptes we can do just a lot of thing like wake on lan etc ....
15:47
<MrOnion_>
Does someone here understand the ltsp-build-client process please ?
15:48

thanks. and i will just hang around on this irc channel listening to people :)
15:48
MrOnion, try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz11qtduI8s
15:48
it helps me a lot.
15:50
<MrOnion_>
I'm not talking about local apps... I have problems with some of the steps in ltsp-build-client
15:51
<TFDL>
sorry MrOnion, try this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/UpdatingChroot
15:51
<alkisg>
!ask | echo MrOnion_:
15:51
<ltsp`>
MrOnion_: ask: Don't ask to ask a question, simply ask it, and if someone knows the answer, they'll respond. Please hang around for at least a full hour after asking a question, as not everybody constantly monitors the channel.
15:52
<MrOnion_>
There seem to be steps that directly reference /opt/ltsp/x86_64/etc before is has been created, when everything is still being built in /opt/ltsp/mock/epel-6-x86_64/root
15:54
<alkisg>
MrOnion_: also mention your distibution... most people here are using ubuntu or debian, but there are some that know about fedora/gentoo or whatever else you might be using... maybe if you wait enough they'll answer, otherwise you could also try the ltsp mailing list
15:54
<MrOnion_>
$ROOT is set to /opt/ltsp/x86_64 but the actual directory doesn't exist yet (not until after the after-install phase in 009-mock-chroot)
15:55
<alkisg>
E.g. ltsp-build-client in ubuntu doesn't have a mock-chroot script
15:55
<MrOnion_>
Ok. Build server is Centos 6.4 and I think I'm using the K12 build (but it isn't clearly stated so anywhere).
15:56
<alkisg>
Centos users are a bit rare here, so if you don't get an answer in a couple of hours, try the mailing list too
15:57
<MrOnion_>
I end up with a working client image, but in a few places things don't quite work correctly.
15:57
<alkisg>
And ltsp upstream support for it isn't as solid as in other distros...
15:58
<MrOnion_>
Due to the use of fuse clients don't recognise they have a network mounted root and try to take eth0 down and then unmount / (with predictable results! :-( )
15:59
<alkisg>
In ubuntu that happened because of network manager, not because of fuse, and the solution was to declare eth0 as manually managed
15:59
<MrOnion_>
OK alkisg, I'll check back here later (time to go home now)....
15:59
<alkisg>
Maybe ltsp centos scripts need a similar workaround
16:01
<MrOnion_>
No network manager installed (infact it is explicitly uninstalled). Do you know the best place to get to K12 developers please ? I'm very close to having a useable build and I've spent too much time on this now not to keep going with centos.
16:01
<alkisg>
I think there's a K12 mailing list that once had some ltsp-related threads there
16:02
But I've never used any rpm-based distro, so I'm very unfamiliar with all this
16:04
<MrOnion_>
OK, I'll check back later.... thanks

hi, has anybody experience with running xubuntu in LTSP ? I have some problems to run proper Xubuntu session there.

alkisg: I see that LDM is not setting properly required xubuntu variables XDG_DATA_DIRS, XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
19:01
<alkisg>
imincik: what are your lts.conf contents?
19:01
Maybe you're using LDM_XSESSION instead of LDM_SESSION....
19:01
<imincik>
alkisg: so I have created launcher script to set it, but even than I have to copy some xubuntu settings to user home dir
19:01
<alkisg>
LDM doesn't set those variables, the xubuntu session does
19:02
<imincik>
I am using LDM_SESSION=/usr/bin/startxubuntu where startxubuntu is my workaround script
19:03
No matter what I choosed in LDM I always got XFCE session
19:03
<alkisg>
ls -l /usr/share/xsessions
19:03
<imincik>
without that custom startxubuntu script
19:03
<alkisg>
Then pastebin your xubuntu.desktop session from there
19:04
You shouldn't need a custom script...

19:10
<alkisg>
So it's the same session? Or is there an actual difference between them?
19:11
<imincik>
alkisg: By what I discovered in last days, the difference is that Xubuntu is setting different paths in XDG variables and that way it is loading totally different settings on desktop

imincik: the display managers just exec whatever is in the Exec line, so if it's the same, I don't understand how it's doing different things
19:20
<imincik>
alkisg: I do not understand too, but in standard xubuntu LightDM is doing it somehow
19:21
alkisg: I do not believe I am the only one who is trying to load Xubuntu in LTSP. I do not see any real examples of anybody on net.
19:24
alkisg: maybe I can try to point xubuntu.desktop file to my startxubuntu script if it makes difference
19:24
<alkisg>
You shouldn't need a script
19:25
Just setting LDM_SESSION should be enough
19:25
Any DM should be able to load xfce or xubuntu, be it lightdm, gdm, ldm or nodm...
19:25
It shouldn't need any tricks or hacks

alkisg: what should I put to LDM_SESSION ? LDM_SESSION=XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/xdg-xubuntu:/etc/xdg:/etc/xdg /usr/bin/startxfce ?
19:27
<alkisg>
No, plain startxfce like in the xubuntu.desktop Exec line
19:27
startxfce4
19:28
<imincik>
alkisg: but in this case I will get XFCE session which is something really different.
19:28
alkisg: maybe it is quite non standard way of loading session in xubuntu
19:28
<alkisg>
Maybe xubuntu has some hacks in /etc/X11/Xsession.d then?
19:29
grep for XDG inside that dir...
19:29
grep XDG /etc/X11/Xsession.d/*
19:29
If you see anything specific to XFCE, then yeah it's a hack
19:31
<imincik>
alkisg: there are some XDG things in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/
19:32
XDG_CONFIG_DIRS="$DEFAULT_XDG_CONFIG_DIRS"/xdg-"$DESKTOP_SESSION":"$XDG_CONFIG_DIRS"
19:32
alkisg: so they are setting something by the name of the session
19:32
alkisg: I think I was already looking there
19:33
alkisg: so it seems that setting correctly $DESKTOP_SESSION in ldm is a key
19:34
<alkisg>
Then try it, CLIENT_ENV="DESKTOP_SESSION=xubuntu"
19:34
In lts.conf
19:35
Or in the LDM_SESSION line, or with a wrapper script...
19:35
If that works, then file a bug against LDM, to set DESKTOP_SESSION= the selected session

Hey vagrantc: Any experience with UEFI and linux installs?
20:48
<vagrantc>
very little

<bennabiy>
I have gotten it to work a couple times, but they are so spread out, I can never remember how I get it to work
20:49
<vagrantc>
i mostly work with old hardware... just starting to see EFI stuff, but usually in bios-compatibility mode
20:49
<bennabiy>
Yes. I am thinking I might need to just do the MBR install, and quit mucking around with it
20:50
<vagrantc>
starting to get involved with newish arm hardware... mst i've seen so far don't use EFI
20:50
<bennabiy>
But since I have gotten it to work in the past, there is that thing in me that wants to get it working
20:50
<vagrantc>
if any do
20:51
<bennabiy>
If they are classed as Windows 8 supported, they have to
20:51
<vagrantc>
right
20:52
<bennabiy>
I think within the next couple days I am going to make those changes alkisg and I talked about an then I will resubmit for review.
20:53
It is a little harder for me to do the support on the debian side of mint (as I do not run it at all) but I am going to include initial code to help it along :)
20:54
<vagrantc>
as long as it doesn't break regular debin, then we can wait for the bug reports from lmde users :)
20:54
<bennabiy>
I appreciate how much help you have been towards this (even though you dont personally use it at all)
20:55
<vagrantc>
yeah, i hear enough about it, both bad and good, that i should probably at least do some test installs
20:56
<bennabiy>
I was not too impressed with the debian version vs. Ubuntu (I prefer the Ubuntu one) like I said before, if I am going to run Debian, I will run Debian :)
20:56
<vagrantc>
since it's so close to the distros i do use
20:56
<bennabiy>
I just do not like the way Ubuntu is headed
20:57
So I like Mint :)
