hello

12:34
<georgy>
I would just like to know, how many of you, have had requests for load balanced LTSP setups
12:34
or already have implemented such setups
12:35
<johnny>
folks have talked about it here
12:35
but you should prolly search the lists
12:35
<georgy>
ok thanks johnny
12:36
I am working on such kind of systems
12:36
* system
12:36
I see that there is no perfect solution
12:36
and that there are many problems that should be solved
12:37
it would be nice to have some more hints and know the others' point of views
12:42
<vagrantc>
ubuntu (gutsy) and debian (lenny/sid) should both have some load-balancing options
12:48ogra has quit IRC
12:49ogra has joined #ltsp
12:49
<georgy>
I kI know
12:49
* I know
12:49
the options are far not enough
12:50
I just wanted to get some feedback
12:50
from bigger setups
12:50
actually one of the problems is having a huge amount of servers
12:50
and not properly balanced application load
12:50
so that you have some times really high peaks and other times your nodes do almost nothing
12:50
while other have a lot of work
12:51
depending on the application server
12:51
I am speaking of really big setups
12:51
3500 - 5000 nodes
12:52
*sorry 3500 - 5000 client nodes
12:52
connected to your balanced setup
12:52staffencasa_ has joined #ltsp
12:54
<vagrantc>
georgy: there is an option to set up whatever sort of balancing mechanisms you want
12:54
so i don't see how that's good enough
12:55
and if anyone comes up with something good, we can incorporate it into documentation examples or even make it an easy configuration option
12:56
<johnny>
who has setups that big atm?
12:56
<vagrantc>
though with setups that big, you probably want to do "diskless workstations" or something like that
12:57
making the servers just file servers, and the clients actually do the processing
13:03
<Blinny>
Why's that?
13:04
I mean, other than the obvious of 'there aren't servers big enough to handle' -- but couldn't you round-robin the 'start firefox' requests between a pool of application servers connected to a backend pool of fileservers?
13:06
<vagrantc>
Blinny: well, you would have to develop the technology to do so, keep all the user's data in sync between servers, keep the login status current across all servers, etc.
13:07
<Blinny>
Sounds like a good task for an outfit like Google.
13:08
<vagrantc>
also, the simple matter of wrappers to launch any given program in this unconventional way
13:08
<Blinny>
Right.
13:09
<vagrantc>
because many of your desktop environment menus and such may have hard-coded patsh to the binaries, and replacing the binaries would conflict with most linux distro's package management
13:09
(or at least be very ugly)
13:09
like, there's ways to do overrides on debian, but it's not pretty.
13:10
anyways, gotta go

hi .. does anybody experiences with NAS ?
14:16
<georgy>
Blinny: well, you would have to develop the technology to do so, keep all the user's data in sync between servers, keep the login status current across all servers, etc.
14:16
<--- I am working on this

i'm trying to use NAS .. it seems to work, but i got very low quality sound from it
14:19
<johnny>
does anybody here actually use NAS?
14:20
<g0g0r1n>
is something better?
14:20
<johnny>
depends on your use case
14:20
i think most people use pulse or esd
14:21
<g0g0r1n>
i'm watching movies on my notebook from server through xdmcp .. i wanna also hear sound
14:22
<johnny>
that's not ltsp
14:22
or at least doesn't sound like it
14:22putty has quit IRC
14:22
<g0g0r1n>
no it isn't .. but ltsp also use xdmcp and NAS as far as i know
14:22
<johnny>
nope
14:23
not for most people at least
14:23
if they use ltsp5
14:23
there are a few 4.2 folks around..
14:23K_O-Gnom has joined #ltsp

<johnny>
wouldnt you be better off just mounting the remote file system and watching movies locally?
14:24putty has joined #ltsp
14:25
<g0g0r1n>
ltsp5 doesn't use xdmcp anymore ?
14:25
<johnny>
not by default
14:25
<g0g0r1n>
and what it use?
14:25
<johnny>
local display manager
14:25
or ltsp display manager
14:25
tunnels X over ssh
14:27
<g0g0r1n>
yes .. but isnt ssh tunneled protocol xdmcp?
14:27
i dont need to tunnel it through ssh on my local lan
14:27
security doesnt matter
14:28
<johnny>
no.. it runs locally
14:28
you'd have a much simpler time just mounting your remote file system
14:29
i just used sshfs on my local lan
14:29
worked fine for me
14:29
altho i hear it doesn't do so well over wireless, but i haven't tested that out personally
14:29
i guess it depends on your signal
14:30
<g0g0r1n>
mount file system isnt problem .. but then my notebook use harddrive often for swaping .. i got noisy harddrive .. its problem at night
14:30
when my girlfriend is sleeping by my side
14:30
:)
14:31
<johnny>
aha.. not enough ram then i guess
14:31
you could try setting up pulse i guess
14:31
<g0g0r1n>
and i rather work on my server computer desktop anyway
14:31
its something similar to NAS ?
14:34
i will try
14:34
thanx a lot johnny
14:34
<johnny>
it can be used that way
14:34
iirc
14:34
it does a lot more tho
