<patrickb>
a question for you...if you cannot help who can?
10:37
i have them mounting...the icon appears on the screen...but when i open the icon there is no data altho i know there is data on the stick....where am i going wrong?
10:37
<jammcq>
sounds like a FUSE problem
10:37
what distro?
10:38
<patrickb>
SuSE 10.1
10:39
<jammcq>
hmm, have you been through the troubleshooting document on the wiki?
10:39
<patrickb>
yea...that is how i got as far as i have
10:40
<jammcq>
that should have pinpointed where the problem is
10:45
<patrickb>
step 10 is giving an IP address rather than a host name...that shouldn't make a difference?
10:45
<jammcq>
umm, dunno
10:45
is the workstation listed in /etc/hosts ?
10:45
<patrickb>
yea...
10:45
and in local DNS
10:46
<jammcq>
welp, you prolly need to talk to sbalneav. problem is, he's on a plane right now
10:46
I suggest you go through the steps again, and record your results to each step, and email it to sbalneav@ltsp.org
10:46
that's the best way to give him the info he needs to diagnose the problem
10:48
<patrickb>
ok will do cheers
10:52
<joebaker>
You mentioned /etc/hosts earlier. There is both /etc/hosts on the LTSP server and in the exported home directory of the thin clients as will right?
10:52
<jammcq>
the one on the host server is the important one
10:52
<joebaker>
ok.
10:52
Wow Am I starting to see chatter on the gconfd mailing list.
10:53
<jammcq>
h3h
10:53
err, heh
10:53
<joebaker>
I've been subscribed to it for over a year .
10:54
Hopefully it will evolve to something that works for the LTSP local apps.
10:55
<jammcq>
i've noticed over the past year or so, we're getting some real attention from other projects, like Gnome and KDE and Pulseaudio
10:55
there's a study somewhere that says 36% of all Gnome deployments are on thin clients
10:56
<joebaker>
I hope I didn't sidetrack any other important issues. Oh, one other very important issue I'm seeing is that there doesn't seem to be a tmp directory in my home directory on an edgy based ubuntu system. The Gconfd directory is in /tmp. Although I think this can be changed in /etc/ somewhere.
10:57
<patrickb>
and so you shoudl have the attention....i first looked into LTSP at ver 3...I wanted to deploy it in a local school but wouldn't allow it. it has come along way since then and I am now looking at deplying at home for my kids
10:57
<jammcq>
why would there be a tmp dir in your home dir?
10:59
<joebaker>
I talked to somebody from Mandriva once who moved the gconfd directory to /home/user/tmp/gconfd-user so that it could be shared out over nfs.
11:00
Sharing /tmp over nfs amoung many machines is very wierd.
11:00
I've done it :)
11:07
I don't recommend it.

what's new?
12:01
<joebaker>
I managed to participate in the local apps disucssion recently. I mentioned the need for Gconfd to accept communications via TCP
12:01
You did alot of the work on LTSP sound if I recall correctly.
12:03
I'll be walking away from the computer soon. So I apologize if I don't have time to say goodbye.

I've got 12 users logged in atm, and would prefer not to reboot the server... any ideas?

jammcq:what does it mean if most all python pkgs are held back when upgrade to edgy from breezy?
20:55
<jammcq>
umm, not a clue
20:55
<mwright1>
jammcq: message is something like this (results of my latest attempt on the phone)
20:55
failed to mount the root directory via nfs
20:55
possible reasons include
20:55
1. NFS services may not be running on services
20:55
2. workstation ip does not /etc/hosts or in dns
20:55
3. wrong address for nfs server in the dhcp config
20:55
4. wrong path name for root directory in the dhcp config
20:56
I am sure a reboot would normalise things, however that's not ideal as there are lots of active users atm.
20:56
<jammcq>
mwright1: are you logged into that server?
20:56
<cliebow>
mwright..is hostname to ip clearly defined?
20:57

I am remoted into that server via ssh

is a message I'm getting from the /var/log/messages
21:03
<rjune>
cliebow: my guess is it means you have something that explicity deps on the old version of python
21:04
mwright1: that looks like an selinux error
21:04
<cliebow>
that is what i am getting from the errors as well

Hello PMantis
21:41
<jammcq>
Scotty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
21:42
sbalneav: hey, we talked about using the fstab as the format for the x prop. I'm thinking there's not enough info in that format
22:00
<PMantis>
hey, /proc/mdstat output:
22:00
md0 : active raid1 hdc1[1] hda1[2](F)
22:00
104320 blocks [2/1] [_U]
22:00
Obvious failure... but which drive failed?
22:00
<jammcq>
umm
22:01
<PMantis>
hdc is listed first, and the left 'U' is missing.
22:02
<rjune>
but hda1 has F next to it
22:02
is that relevant?
22:02
<PMantis>
But, below... it shows "[2/1]", so does that show the "map" for the UU?
22:02
<jammcq>
I think the whole thing has a (F) next to it
22:02
<rjune>
is my guess
22:03
<PMantis>
Yeah, that was my take. the RAID has failed.
22:03* PMantis goes to look at the console
22:05
<PMantis>
Hmmm
22:05
no clues there.
22:05
but eth2 shows: "Detected Tx Unit Hang"
22:05
...on the console
22:06
weird
22:07
I think a failed
22:07
hda
22:07
# grep -R "DriveReady" *
22:07
anaconda.syslog:<4>hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
22:07
That was ran in /var/log
22:07
Time for an RMA...
22:09
<rjune>
yeah, that does point at hda
22:10
<PMantis>
So perhaps the (F) is referencing the drive, not the MD device
22:11
I gotta replace that! Live data on that machine
22:12
Seagate Barracuda dfive
22:14
<rjune>
heh, so you're saying it's important? :-)

<PMantis>
Since hdc is the only good drive, how can I be sure that grub is properly installed there?
22:24
...that is, before I reboot this thing to test the drive. heh.
22:25
<jammcq>
before you even think about rebooting it, make sure you copy the data to some other system or media
22:25
<PMantis>
Backuppc has an image of it
22:26
Ahh hdc1 was not bootable
22:26
<rjune>
oops
22:27
<PMantis>
Heh, caught before a reboot, NBD
22:27
Heh, yeah.. this is bad: # fdisk /dev/hda
22:27
Unable to read /dev/hda
22:28
<rjune>
uhm, yup
22:28
<PMantis>
With a bunch of Buffer I/O error messages on the console
22:28
sectors, logical blocks
22:28
Ok, I have a slight dilemma
22:29
I'd like to make a grub boot floppy before I power this off
22:29
But no floppy in the machine... and can't plug one in with it on.
22:29
<rjune>
LOL
22:29
you have a USB key?
22:29
you can make it bootable
22:29
<PMantis>
Can I use dd to make an image?
22:30
Uhm. yeah
22:30
Not blank though
22:30
I could always export a floppy drive over NFS, I guess
22:30
<jammcq>
that won't work
22:31
you can't export a boot sector over nfs
22:31
<PMantis>
Heh, only machine I have with a floppy is the firewalll
22:31
Ahh
22:31* PMantis loves google
22:32
<jammcq>
this is why I like the 3ware cards. it abstracts all of that out for you, so the drive array just appears as a scsi device
22:32
no need to worry about hd[abcd]
22:33
<PMantis>
No doubt that hardware RAID is much easier.
22:33
<jammcq>
what OS is on that box?
22:35
<PMantis>
That's CentOS
22:35
<jammcq>
is /boot on a raid device?
22:36
<PMantis>
yes
22:36
<sbalneav>
heh, seems every time I see PMantis in the channel, it's dealing with sw raid troubles
22:37
<PMantis>
Hah
22:37
dd if=/dev/zero of=./grubboot.img bs=1440k count=1
22:37
mount -o loop -t vfat ./grubboot.img /mnt/grubfloppy/
22:38
no workie... generic "wronf fs type" error
22:38
oh, wait... vfat? I got to copy/paste happy
22:38
<jammcq>
it's a boot sector, not a filesystem
22:38
<PMantis>
?
22:38
<jammcq>
grubboot.img, is that mountable?
22:39
<PMantis>
I'd need to have menu.lst on the floppy...
22:39
Nope
22:39
Not the way I'm doing it at least

wow, got it to work.
22:44
<jammcq>
hey, anybody have any experience with bittorrents?
22:44
<PMantis>
Yeah.. what's up?
22:45
<sbalneav>
A bit.
22:45
<PMantis>
sbalneav, nice pun. :)
22:45
<sbalneav>
In Ubuntu, you can usually just browse a .torrent file in the browser, and "the right thing" will happen.
22:45
<jammcq>
as I understand it, if my PC is on the net, then I can download files, and i'm expected to provide download capabilities to other people
22:46
the more I "participate" the better my download rate will be
22:46
<PMantis>
Yeah, you can turn that off.
22:46
<jammcq>
but.... what if i'm behind a firewall?
22:46
<sbalneav>
jammcq: The way to do that is to leave the bt client up and running for a bit after you've finished the download.
22:47
it tunnels, so it's ok.
22:47
<PMantis>
Then you can only make outbound connections... so the receiver better NOT be behind a firewall.
22:47
<jammcq>
i'm downloading via bt on my laptop, and the throughput isn't very good
22:48
i'm thinking that i'm not participating properly
22:48
i'm taking, but not giving
22:48
<PMantis>
I don't think it's throttled like that... probably just not enough seeders
22:48
<jammcq>
78 seeds right now
22:48
<PMantis>
hmmm
22:48
<jammcq>
does that mean I can pull pieces from 78 different places?
22:49
<PMantis>
Yes, as I understand it.
22:49
As long as each of the 78 are not behind a firewall
22:49
<jammcq>
hmm, apparently, I'm also doing some uploading, so maybe it's working fine
22:50
I thought I needed to run something on my firewall, like a proxy or something
22:50
<PMantis>
It might do better if your firewall was running BT, as there's no NAT - it can received from others that ARE behind a firewall
22:51sbalneav has left #ltsp
22:51
<jammcq>
hmm, lost scotty
22:51
<PMantis>
Huh, someting I said? :)
22:52
BTW, you might want to check out torrentflux
22:52
Runs on a server, you can start torrents, stop, etc all remotely.
22:52
I haven't used it yet, but it's on my mind for a project.

23:13
DOH
23:14
all that ruddy C programming I did for xproperties?
23:14
On the command line:
23:14
xprop -root -f FOOBAR 8s -set FOOBAR "Some value"
23:14
the xprop command can do it all.
23:14
MUCH simple.
23:15
s/./r./
23:17
<jammcq>
scotty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
23:18
sbalneav: did you see my comment earlier about using the contents of fstab as the format for the xprop?
23:21
<sbalneav>
Yeah
23:21
<jammcq>
isn't there some info that you need that's not part of fstab?
23:22
<sbalneav>
I'm just sorting out the survivability of the propeties.
23:22
Not sure. If we need something more, we can pass it along.
