I love secretaries. One needed to make some report for a few mentally disabled clients of us. She spent days making it into really something nice you know, with lots of pictures taken directly from the digital camera, lots of special text markup objects, whatever kind of stuff she can find she puts in there
05:04
Document is over 50 megabytes.... anyway, then she decides "ok, I'm done" and clicks to print 15 copies... thin client freezes, printer starts to actually print kernel panic messages....
05:04* Hyperbyte sighs...
05:05
<Hyperbyte>
There's 20 OpenOffice processes under her account running on the server that are in a frozen state...

<andygraybeal>

05:26
<Hyperbyte>
Ended up exporting to PDF first, then print. :P That seems to work better.
05:27
<andygraybeal>
good job w/ pdf. i try to get people to use pdfs more around here too
05:27
<Hyperbyte>
Yeah, it's strange though...
05:27
Printing directly from OpenOffice should be just as good as printing from a PDF reader
05:28
Makes me wonder what kind of worthless junk OpenOffice sends to the printer to crash it
05:28
<mgariepy>
i had a bug with oo when printing too. i was printing a 200 pages documents and all the memory on the thin client until it oom kill Xorg
05:29
<andygraybeal>
ack.. you guys are scarin' me.. no more horror stories :P
05:30
<Hyperbyte>
Heheh
05:31
<andygraybeal>
naw, just kiddn... i have an icon on our desktops for things we print often... it uses 'lp' .. it needs pdf
05:31
everytime they update their documents, i have them trained, or keep asking them to export to pdf.
05:34
<alkisg>
Impress is also horrible with large documents, after 50 pictures it's crawling so I export the .odp to .pdf to show the presentation
05:34
Storing the images in external files (there's a [v] link to check box) makes it a little better, but not much
05:35
<andygraybeal>
alkisg, aah nice, i will keep that in mind
05:36
