<Alex_____>
Hi All,
18:03
Is someone out there possibly able to help me with a few questions I have about LTSP? I'm in the last stages of a project and I can't seem to find any info on the couple issues I'm having.
18:04
<alkisg>
!ask
18:04
<ltsp>
alkisg: ask: (#1) Don't ask to ask a question, simply ask it, and if someone knows the answer, they'll respond. Please hang around for at least 15 minutes after asking a question, as not everybody constantly monitors the channel., or (#2) Please do not ask to ask a question, just go ahead and ask. People will respond if they have a solution or can help.

<Alex_____>
Right - My system, Ubuntu (10.10) But will use later versions. LTSP, KVM/QEMU all properly setup. VM's running. The goal, booting directly into my windows VM via LTSP thin clients.
18:06
<nubae_>
ok.... my anger level from 0-10 is at about 7 and a half
18:06
so please bear with me
18:06
I need a new hosting provider
18:07
<Alex_____>
When I edit lts.conf, to boot into RDP using screen_07 = rdesktop
18:07
<nubae_>
It has taken godaddy longer than 2 weeks to sort out a simple web issue
18:07
any suggestions
18:07
?
18:07
<Alex_____>
It boots into a black server with white cursor that's moveable.
18:07
Godaddy?
18:07
What's the problem?
18:08
*edit for my above note, HOW do I boot into my VM using the RDP option in lts.conf - will this ONLY work for Windows Terminal servers? Alternatively, HOW can I get Rdesktop to PROPERLY boot at startup of an LTSP thin client, I don't want the user to see a Ubuntu Desktop environment at all.
18:09
<alkisg>
Setting SCREEN_07=rdesktop <params> or specifying RDP_OPTIONS and maybe RDP_SERVER should be enough
18:09
<Alex_____>
In theory, should this successfully boot into the VM?
18:09
<alkisg>
If it isn't, and you suspect something else is wrong, you can troubleshoot from a local xterm
18:10
VM is ltsp client or windows server?
18:10
VM=windows server, and you want a physical client to connect there?
18:10
Sure, should be easy
18:10
<Alex_____>
LTSP client connecting to windows 7 VM.
18:10
Via rdesktop.
18:11
When adding this into lts.conf I get a black screen at boot with moveable white cursor.
18:11
<alkisg>
What's the ip of the vm server?
18:11
<Alex_____>
192.168.1.71
18:11
<alkisg>
What's the ip of the ltsp server?
18:11
<Alex_____>
70
18:11
<alkisg>
Did you set RDP_SERVER?
18:11
<Alex_____>
Wait,
18:12
Ah
18:12
RDP_SERVER = The server running the VM? Or the VM itself?
18:12
<alkisg>
.71
18:12
The ip where rdesktop should connect
18:12
Where in port 3389 rdp server is listening
18:12
<Alex_____>
Ok yes, that's the IP of the VM itself.
18:13
The VM is hosted in the LTSP server, (several VM's)
18:13
They connect back via rdesktop
18:13
<nubae_>
godaddy is hillbilies hosting]
18:13
so i've found
18:13
<Alex_____>
Basically I've got this in lts.conf (and now getting black screen with white cursor)
18:14
screen_07 = rdesktop
18:14
rdp_server = "192.168.1.71" (windows 7 VM on LTSP server)
18:14
What am I missing?
18:15
When booted up properly (into gnome) running terminal and the regular Rdesktop args it boots into the VM without an issue.
18:15
<alkisg>
Alex_____: remove the screen_07=rdesktop entry, and boot normally into LDM, login into gnome, run `ltsp-localapps xterm` so that you get a local terminal, and finally try manually connecting from there with rdesktop
18:15
<Alex_____>
I've currently got a script delaying Rdesktop at boot for 2 seconds to give Gnome a chance to load, then this boots flawlessly into the VM. But this isn't ideal, as the user sees a flash of gnome.
18:16
<alkisg>
erm what?
18:16
Can you put your lts.conf to pastebin?
18:16
<Alex_____>
Sorry - when I DONT use lts.conf
18:16
When I boot into regular ldm/gnome. Then I get a script to launch Rdesktop at boot.
18:17
Can't paste lts.conf at this stage (on my mac)
18:17
What I want to achieve, is to not have to use a startup script to launch rdesktop and have ltsp handle this using lts.conf
18:17
(like screen_07 etc etc)
18:18
I know Rdesktop works - as I can launch it fine in the terminal once logged onto gnome.
18:18
<alkisg>
OK, do what I said above with `ltsp-localapps xterm`
18:18
<Alex_____>
If this works?
18:18
<alkisg>
If it works paste your lts.conf as it's just a syntax issue
18:18
<Alex_____>
Ok.
18:19
Will you be around at some other time today?
18:19
<alkisg>
I may be around for a couple more hours
18:19
<Alex_____>
Ok - damn, (I'm at work) I'll have to try this when I'm back in front of the server.
18:20
I can write up what's in the lts.conf as it's a basic file just to get this going at the moment.
18:21
I suspect xterm will work. One thought I had, could it be possible that this will only work with windows terminal servers? The VM is just a windows 7 VM, not a server.
18:23
[default]
18:23
SCREEN_07=rdesktop
18:23
RDP_SERVER=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
18:23komunista has joined IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-168-237-112.dynamic.nextra.sk)
18:24
<Alex_____>
That's it. Except I've also added this to a specific thin client (mac address)
18:24
Just to get this damn thing going. With this all I'm getting is the aforementioned black screen with white cursor.
18:26
All the LTSP articles online (and trust me, I've read ALL of them) constantly mention Windows Terminal servers.
18:27
Which is where I'm not 100% sure if this option will work for a regular Windows 7 VM.
18:28
Also, thank you for your help so far. I really appreciate it.
18:37
<alkisg>
(09:21:06 μμ) Alex_____: I suspect xterm will work. One thought I had, could it be possible that this will only work with windows terminal servers ==> rdesktop works on any version of windows as long as it has rdp enabled
18:37
<Alex_____>
So I'm just missing something?
18:38
<alkisg>
Yes, when you're onsite start troubleshooting with the local xterm
18:38
E.g. in 10.04 the rdesktop.sh was missing, maybe that affects 10.10 too
18:39
<Alex_____>
I see. Rdesktop does seem to work well once in terminal. etc etc.
18:39
I did attempt this on 11.04 also,
18:40
But same issue. I also noted, that the ltsplocal-apps command doesn't work for Rdesktop. I assumed that this is because it's integrated into LTSP and launches locally by default.
18:42komunista has left IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-168-237-112.dynamic.nextra.sk, Quit: Leaving.)
18:44
<alkisg>
A "local terminal" is completely different from a "gnome terminal"
18:46
<Alex_____>
Ok. I'll be sure to try this when I
18:47
get in front of the server.
18:47
If it works and I connect, what's the next step? Likewise, if it doesn't work, what could be the issues?
18:51
<alkisg>
IRC usually is helpful for troubleshooting specific issues
18:51
For general questions, there's the ubuntu ltsp wiki
18:51
You could read some cases that can go wrong there
18:52
There's also the irclogs in the topic and the ltsp mailing list
18:52
You can find 100 things that can go wrong there, if you want to look for what could be wrong
18:52
<Alex_____>
Fair enough, sorry :)
18:52
I came here because to be honest, I'm at my wits end with this thing. I've been at it forever. I'm just happy to have a new lead to follow.
18:53
<alkisg>
One example is "rdesktop.sh missing"
18:53Mava has left IRC (Mava!~Mava@a91-154-45-40.elisa-laajakaista.fi, Read error: Connection reset by peer)
18:53
<alkisg>
Another is "no routing from your thin client to the vm server"
18:53
Lots of possible issues, it would take hours to cover all the "what if"s
