I ran into a similar problem with two Ubuntu 12.04 servers and couldn't get it sorted over the weekend. To me it seems that that ltsp-update-image does not switch a chroot to use NBD
12:06
although it apparenty should
12:06
s/apparenty/apparently/
12:09
<muppis>
I don't have any experience from that. Tested only once to switch from NBD to NFS. Worked back then, but never took it to production.
12:09
<lifeboy>
Which means I must to the change manually, but I can't find the file(s) alkisg showed me to change in the wheezy chroot... :-(
12:10
There are many examples on various sites on how to switch from NBD to NFS, but switching back is not so clear.

<lmartins>
Hi
12:12
I have two doubts
12:13
<alkisg>
lifeboy: recent chroots can be booted via NFS or NBD without chroot changes, I don't think I ever told you about chroot changes
12:14
<lmartins>
the first is if it's possible to have a chroot that, before appears the LDM greeter, opens a VPN connection?
12:14
It's possible?
12:14
the other one is if it's possible to open a ldm session from another linux machine? With a command...
12:14
Which commando do I use?
12:14
<alkisg>
I don't know if you talked with vagrantc about it, but I doubt he'd instruct you to do chroot changes...
12:16
<lifeboy>
alkisg: You helped me in a private chat and I don't have a transcript of the log (it was Friday a week ago after 16h00). But never mind that, how does one then tell the client to use one or the other without changing the chroot?
12:16
<alkisg>
from pxelinux.cfg/default, it's in the kernel command line (append)

lifeboy: you need to run /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels in the chroot for $CHROOT/boot/pxelinux.cfg/default to get updated, so that then ltsp-update-image works
12:29
(to get pxelinux.cfg/default modified automatically)
12:29
That's for the default boot method sequence

alkisg: I can only check if the clients boot after 16h00 (about 1.5 hours from now) since the server is in production and I have to change to the new installation after hours.
12:30
<alkisg>
lifeboy: sure, np, but btw you can easily tell the old dnsmasq to ignore a few clients, and the new dnsmasq to only answer to those few clients
12:30
That way you'd test with a couple of clients even within working hours

The server is not running at all. I've done a new installation on a different partition. I suppose it is technically possible, but I'm not adept enough to try that while the system is live and users logged on.
12:36
I had the idea to run it all in a VM initially, but eventually opted to do the work after hours.
12:36
<alkisg>
Sure. Just for the fun of it, it's also possible to boot the server's other partition via kvm, and have both partitions running at the same time :P
12:38
<lifeboy>
I have a libvirt set up on the production machine. So you're saying I can create a new VM and give it the other new partition and run it from there? Sounds exciting! Let me try it.
12:39
<alkisg>
lifeboy: better not try new things at production hours, e.g. you might actually set up bridged mode and have random clients boot to the new server, which wouldn't be what you want right now :)
12:40
<lifeboy>
I'll try it after 16:00 and if it work then at least I can carry on tomorrow if I have to without distrupting the office

hey alkisg, how hard would it be to create the chroot from an already made image?
13:32
full OS image ready to boot up off of
13:33
<alkisg>
gbaman: ...supposedly you just install ltsp-client on it and it's ready
13:33
<gbaman>
as the raspberry pi foundation release their OSs normally as a nicely made up image file
13:33
with all the required software
13:34
all nicely bundled
13:34
including a few that dont come as .debs
13:34
<alkisg>
Nice. Yup it's supposed to be as simple as `apt-get install ltsp-client`.
13:34
<gbaman>
is there a way to pass it to the LTSP client builder?
13:35
<alkisg>
There's no point to build an image if you already have the image
13:35
<gbaman>
of is it just a manual copy and paste?
13:35
*or
13:35
<alkisg>
You can just copy it to the ltsp server, yea
13:35
h
13:38
vagrantc has some notes about creating a pi chroot: http://cascadia.debian.net/trenza/Documentation/raspberrypi-ltsp-howto/
13:38
<gbaman>
what about the other place ltsp puts stuff.... the tftp folder?
13:38
<alkisg>
...the server-side configuration and the pi boot configuration might be useful to you
13:39
The tftp folder gets created with ltsp-update-kernels, no need to transfer anything there manually
13:40
<gbaman>
that is nearly exactly the same as the raw text version he made for me a while back that i have been using ever since :)
13:40
I am writing up a full guide for how to get this into a classroom right now
13:40
<alkisg>
The ltsp wiki is a nice place to write up that
13:42
<gbaman>
I am currently writing it up on my pi blog, when i get it finished, may also put a copy or just a link on the LTSP wiki
13:42
the wiki is a bit empty if i remember right though
13:43
most of the kelp i got came from here or the ubuntu ltsp section
13:43
<alkisg>
The ubuntu ltsp wiki is getting too old and it's pretty much unmaintained now
13:43
The ltsp.org wiki is where info like that should be
13:43
<gbaman>
i did notice some of the stuff was rather out of date
13:43
i agree, it is though aparently today a little slow
13:44
<alkisg>
knipwim did a good job there on the wiki, but he does need help in maintaining it
13:45
<gbaman>
hmm, so all i can skip all that stuff on building the OS....
13:45
and just use the image...
13:45
sigh
