would like to set up ltsp 5 on mandriva 2007.0 but can't seem to find a step by step how to
00:03
is there a guide online I can refer to?
00:03
<Nikopoika>
heh, i have mandriva 2007.0 too :) but i'm using ltsp 4.2, i thought that ltsp 5 is still in some kind of "beta"-state
00:04
oh sorry, forgot to read topic
00:05
<gaga>
I see, well, ltsp 5 is working on ubuntu, but haven't tried it though, anyway, on the diskless workstation on 4.2, was it easy to connect an ipod and/or digital camera?

how do I do? using 43xx?

<Q-FUNK>
yup

but generally speaking, broadcom hardware is not well supported, because broadcom refuses to publish their specs.

hello, i have a problem with edubuntu 7.04 and ltsp. every client is able to connect to the server, but now i'm trying to boot from a toshiba notebook (with a marvell 88e8036 pci-e network-card), it shows the bootsplash, and after that te screen is freezing...
04:04
after i've turned off the splash screen, there was the following error-message:
04:04
ipconfig: eth0: SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device
04:04
ipconfig: no device to configure
04:04

04:10
<trust-server_>
yes
04:11
<yanu>
maybe the marvell-chipset is not supported in the ltsp-kernel
04:12
<trust-server_>
i also think so
04:13
but i've already included the "sk98lin"-module into the /etc/modules file and into the lts.conf....
04:13
<sep>
trust-server_, check what driver the chipset uses. check if the provided kernel have that driver. if it don't you must upgrade your kernel. if it does you should check if the initrd contains the driver. if it does not. you must rebuild the initrd and include that driver.
04:14
<trust-server_>
should i copy the sk98lin.ko into the initrd directory?
04:19
<sep>
no, you should edit etc/initramfs-tools/modules and recrete the initrd (i usualy do that with dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$version)
04:19
adjust acording if you use a different initrd script.

i also can't run the lsmod command... it says there is no /proc/modules file

you probably have not mounted proc
04:25
<trust-server_>
the folder is empty...

If you're trying to burn a rom, you'lll need the rom type.

Hello my first Irc experiance ever... so sorry if I make mistakes or stupid errors. At least did an hour reading manuals first.
19:42
I just installed a edubuntu 7.04 ltsp setup with two clients in Bamako in a little cybercafe as a test.
19:43
First impression great. Hope this will help Maliens to reuse older computers in a good way.
19:43
A little weird thing I got today. If I put in a usb-key in the server than it show up at the clients....
19:44
If I put in a usb-key in a client it only shows up in that client... good.
19:44
Anybody experience with this?
19:45
<petre>
anco: I get the same thing on K12LTSP
19:45
<anco>
In my case it is unpredictable on what client the usbkey shows up.
19:46
It looks like the first who clicks on the folder get the real view of files.
19:46
<petre>
do you mean when you plug it in at the client or at the server?
19:46
<anco>
the other get only empty window
19:46
the problem is only when plugging into the server
19:46
<petre>
don't use the server as a client
19:47
<anco>
But I like to use the server also as workstation....
19:47
if possible
19:47
At least the "teacher should be able to use and work on it, or not?
19:47
<petre>
since everything is running on the server, anything plugged in there is going to be at least seen by all clients
19:47
<anco>
ah
19:47
<petre>
I have the teachers use a client just like the students
19:48
server is just a box in the corner, no monitor even
19:48
<anco>
mmm okay so should put it in a corner too...
19:49
Next thing pluging in a usbkey on the client... folder comes up, but no way to unmount it?
19:49
People search for safe unmount...
19:49
<petre>
you don't need to unmount it, it's done automatically after 2 seconds of inactivity
19:49
just unplug it
19:49
other OSs are lacking in this area ;-)
19:50
<anco>
oh that's good to know.
19:50
so you are not using the thinclient manager if the server is in a corner...
19:50
<petre>
just tell the users to close the folder, count to 2, then unplug
19:51
I don't think the thinclient manager has to be run on the server, but I haven't tried it yet.
19:52
<anco>
I liked the possibility to set the client dark for a moment. Strong option for teacher to get interrest of all students.
19:53
I use this edubuntu since two weeks now in a prison in Bamako and in a little cybercafe
19:53
<petre>
K12LTSP has fl_teachertool, which does similar things
19:53
what country?
19:53
<anco>
Mali west Africa
19:53
<petre>
cool
19:53
<anco>
where are you using K12LTSP
19:54
I did not try that one yet.
19:54
<petre>
Minnesota, US
19:54
K12LTSP is Fedora + LTSP
19:54
all in one package
19:55
<anco>
I use Ubuntu for over two years now on my laptop but I'm very new to Edubuntu and LTSP
19:55
<petre>
Edubuntu is more cutting edge, as it's LTSP 5, whereas K12LTSP is still LTSP 4.2
19:55
<anco>
Nice you are in school setup? With many clients?
19:56
<petre>
but I think K12LTSP is more...a complete package
19:56
Also, LTSP 5 uses LDM, LTSP Display Manager, which uses encryption between the client & server
19:56
that's good in a security context, but there's a performance hit
19:57
<anco>
I have in prison only two clients and the server. Where our youthworker tries to teach the kids in prison some knowledge to get more chance for a real job
19:57
<petre>
K12LTSP still uses GDM (or KDM) and can use lesser machines for the clients
19:57
<anco>
so in prison I make the same error, using the server as one workstation too..
19:58
<petre>
it matters more that you just use it rather than hair-splitting over which version
19:58
<anco>
That sounds interesting K12LTSP, because I use fairly old machines.
19:58
<petre>
100mhz Pentium will work for clients with K12LTSP
19:58
<anco>
I have another 15 p2 200mhz available for future setup
19:59
<petre>
those will work fine for K12LTSP, not sure about the minimum for Edubuntu
19:59
<anco>
I tried a p133 with edubuntu... takes nearly 5 minutes to boot
19:59
edubuntu asks on their website for minimal P2 200mhz
19:59
<petre>
Try K12LTSP; P133 client will work fine
20:00
But...K12LTSP is 6 CDs, or one 4GB DVD, takes a while to download
20:00
<anco>
Especially the graphical login is irritating in edubuntu
20:01
if you mistype the login name and or password it takes upto 40 seconds to get another chance to do it right....
20:01
<petre>
what's irritating about it?
20:01
Yeah, that's the LDM.
20:01
It's interesting technology, but that's why I think K12LTSP is better at this point
20:01
That may change down the road.
20:02
<anco>
What is used in K12LTSP for this login? or actually I don't want a login. I just need a workstation ready after a boot but did not find how to do that..
20:02
<petre>
I'll be right back, I have to put my son to bed...
