I'm using XFCE on my server & thin clients when I adjust the volume on any of these machines it adjusts the volume for all connect (including the server), why is this so?
01:34
It seems to have something to do with xfce4-volumed
01:35
There doesn't seem to be any manual for xfce4-volumed, should I be using this tool for thin clients? or am I better using some other volume controller?
01:54
<sbalneav>
map7: Pulseaudio is usually what's used.
01:54
on the thin client that is, so make sure xfxe4-volumed is working with pulseaudio
01:59
<map7>
Yeah I'm using pulseaudio, but the alsamixer also controls the volume as I've directed all alsa traffic to pulse using /etc/asound.conf
02:10
I've got a work around for now using amixer & binding this to the keyboards vol up & vol down special buttons

If I start the thin client with 'pavucontrol' sound works until I close 'pavucontrol', why would this be?
05:03
What does pavucontrol start in the background?
06:18
<work_alkisg>
I think that if you don't let pulse start first and manage the hardware, and instead you start alsa first, then only one of them works. So maybe you have a bad configuration (starting alsa first) and when you start pavucontrol, this starts pulse first.
06:19
Which distro is that?

<FrozenZia>
Morning! If I've got an LTSP-server with a USB-tethered internet connection via mobile, and then a single NIC to my internal network, I would say I'm sort of in a dual NIC situation, right?
07:08
I presume my NIC should then be configured to a static IP address....
07:10
Right? And then what other things must I take into account? Is there a good reference I can look at?
07:15rickogden has joined IRC (rickogden!~Rick@host.hifirevolution.com)
07:40
<work_alkisg>
It's a classic dual nic setup, yeah
07:40
An "internal network" static ip is suggested, but if you have another dhcp server on that network, then it's not required
07:41
No special docs necessary, the usual ltsp docs apply
07:57
<FrozenZia>
I just seem to be getting strange messages in my client -- it boots up fine, but then the network mgr says something like "device not managed"
07:57
and is NOT connected to network...

The clients are expected to show that message, because if it was managed by network-manager, it would break the boot connection to the server
08:18
<FrozenZia>
work_alkisg , mmmkay, but how about this lack of internet connectivity? Ah, somehow need to "share" the internet connection from the server in this case? Was wondering how much it would mess things up to install firestarter on the server and share the internet from there...

Ah, and the relevant bit of info MAY be that my LAN is formed by plugging all the PCs into the back of a DLink-wireless router, which has DHCP turned off and wireless turned off.
10:00
I've presumed that it acts pretty much like a switch at that point, and shouldn't be causing any problems like what I

ah problem is that server host is unknown to ssh. need to login once from root console to make host known. that sucks

14:17
<alkisg>
What happens when you try to login?
14:18
<davew>
This is all a bit strange since I have found that on my test client I can log in with a particular user name and password and it is O>K> but if I log in with another it isn't

It sounds like a unity problem then, try forcing unity-2d

Yes you can also select the session from the ldm "preferences" menu
14:42
<davew>
It still appears to be the same.When it fails it drops to a black screen and then comes back to a login . There appear to be a comment about saned being disabled as it flashes past.
14:45
There is also a comment about speed dispatcher being disabled as well
14:46
<alkisg>
Those don't matter; it still sounds like a xorg problem, where unity-3d is selected, it doesn't work, so it restarts. Or it can happen if unity-2d is using compiz for some reason...
14:46
You can get a local shell to verify that
