<mealstrom>
good morning, any ideas why Firefox(browser disk cache is off) opens web pages on disk-less thin clients(ubuntu 12.04 ) very slow compare to chromium?
06:42
<alkisg>
Is the browser cache off because you are using some other caching mechanism like e.g. squid?
06:45
<mealstrom>
alkisg: browser cache and disk cache is off at about:config
06:45
<alkisg>
mealstrom: ok, but why?
06:45
That would slow your firefox unless you have other means to provide caching
06:46
<mealstrom>
alkisg: ive tryed this to speed up webpage openning time. But with no luck. Home directories of users are on NFS server.
06:46
alkisg: even with cache speed is slow
06:47
<alkisg>
mealstrom: then start with that question instead
06:47
So no, firefox by default isn't slower than chromium for my thin clients
06:53
<mealstrom>
alkisg: ill try with clean install of Firefox.

hi guys

anybody has an idea how to turn swap over nbd on
12:32
<alkisg>
!lts.conf
12:32
<ltsp_>
alkisg: lts.conf: http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf
12:32

See NBD_SWAP there

12:49
<tol>
ok, several restarts later the NBD_SWAP is not working at all
12:50
i've read the man page and added the corresponding lines to the files, but my client still doesn't use it
12:52
<alkisg>
tol: distro/version?
12:53
<tol>
alkisg: Ubuntu 12.04, sorry should have said earlier
12:53
<alkisg>
tol: put your lts.conf to pastebin
12:57
<tol>
alkisg: http://pastebin.com/yPDqqpFB
12:58
<alkisg>
tol: remove the nbd port, it's not used anymore
12:58
   X_COLOR_DEPTH = 24      LOCALDEV=false => those are in one line?
12:59
<tol>
alkisg: no
12:59
alkisg: messed up while copying :/
12:59
<alkisg>
Also you don't need to specify NBD_SWAP_SERVER if it's the same as the LTSP server
13:00
<tol>
alkisg: ok so only NBD_SWAP = TRUE is needed?
13:00
<alkisg>
Yup
13:01
<tol>
alkisg: ok, give me 5min to reboot and i'll tell you the results

alkisg: i was unable to get the pxelinux menus to recognize entries from included files... ugh.
15:31

I'm pretty sure it's doable... but I'm too deep into the "shared folders for schools" implementation atm to check :(
15:32
vagrantc: the menu directives are in pxelinux.cfg/default, right?
15:32
<vagrantc>
yeah, i just went ahead and committed code that does the same old same old, but with more menu entries by default.
15:32
<alkisg>
Not in the included files...
15:32
<vagrantc>
alkisg: menu directives?
15:33
the "old" way just allowed you to specify "default menu" and it would generate a menu.
15:35
<alkisg>
vagrantc: maybe pastebin the examples you're using? Just the pxelinux configuration files, not any source...

15:39
<alkisg>
bindfs, symlinks, localapps_extra_mounts... chaos. But the user will just see symlinks under their Public/ directory for whichever shared folder they have access to.
15:41
<vagrantc>
that sounds like magic
15:43
alkisg: for ltsp-pnp ... you think it would be crazy to export over NFS an aufs mount with the cleanup stuff run?
15:44
<alkisg>
vagrantc: no, not at all
15:44Da-Geek has left IRC (Da-Geek!~Da-Geek@163.244.14.166, Remote host closed the connection)
15:44
<vagrantc>
that seems even simpler, in a way, than generating an NBD image
15:44
<alkisg>
That'd allow instant testing, instead of having to wait for 10 minutes for ltsp-update-image to finish...
15:45
But for regular use, a compressed nbd file system is much better than NFS for fat clients
15:45
(faster)
15:46
In the future, when btrfs is in common use, we can use rsync to sync / with the generated image, and then do a btrfs snapshot, run cleanup in it, and export it via nbd
15:46
That'd be quite fast, almost instant for small updates
15:49
<vagrantc>
sure

16:17
<alkisg>
Yey! May your next one be in LTSP :P
16:17
<Hyperbyte>
Well it's LTSP-related actually!
16:17
Their softphone didn't work properly with remote pulseaudio servers... it fell back to alsa when pulseaudio wasn't running locally
16:17
So it worked fine a local app, but not really as a server app.
16:18
<alkisg>
If the fix is outside the LTSP code, it's not an LTSP problem :P

18:32
<alkisg>
Go go vagrantc!
18:32
<vagrantc>
alkisg: so now i'm wondering ... why multiple includes?
18:32
<alkisg>
Multiple in what sense?
18:33
Per chroot, for ltsp-update-image?
18:33
<vagrantc>
alkisg: ltsp, ltsp-other, memtest ?
18:33
er, ltsp-old, as you had called it
18:33
<alkisg>
A user might want to hide some of those
18:33
<vagrantc>
ah.
18:33
<alkisg>
E.g. I want to allow localboot, others wouldn't
18:33
Others might decide that they don't want ltsp-other
18:33
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it means more tftp calls each boot ... which isn't huge, but i was wondering why you might want to do it that way.
18:34
<alkisg>
Hmm true
18:34
We could merge some of those
18:34
<vagrantc>
yeah, i was thinking all the autogenerated stuff could just go in ltsp
18:34
alkisg: i've hidden them in sub-menus now
18:35
<alkisg>
And memtest/localboot can go inside pxelinux.cfg/default
18:35
Although then memtest will only be checked for once
18:35
<vagrantc>
yeah.
18:36
i didn't like it only being checked for once ...
18:36
<alkisg>
Maybe we could make ltsp-update-kernels smarter so that it merges all the files into 1 file?
18:37
Meh /me needs to get back to shared-folders... :-/
18:37
<vagrantc>
sure, sure. well, i've got the basic client-side implementation mostly done.
18:44
<alkisg>
Ouch I was unmounting stuff while reading from </proc/mounts, and that caused my loop to miss a few entries... :(
18:57
<vagrantc>
hrm... don't know how to set a menu default :(
18:58
there's no way that i can see to set a global menu default ... each stanza has it set individually
18:58
it used to just use whichever was the first entry

ONTIMEOUT kiwi-ltsp
19:05
It's respected by vesamenu/menu.c32 as well
19:17
<vagrantc>
some features introduced only in "recent" versions of syslinux ... ontimeout is pretty old ... ui is pretty new.
19:18
i think if i use DEFAULT=menu and ONTIMEOUT=item_we_want_to_boot_by_default
19:18
that should be fairly backwards compatible and still work correctly.

<WaitiGer>
hello can I get some informations about ltsp-cluster and debian wheeze here?
22:00
<vagrantc>
it's a work in progress
22:01
but the progress is slow
22:01
not likely to see it included in wheezy by default
22:02komunista has left IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-168-237-195.dynamic.nextra.sk, Quit: Leaving.)
22:02
<vagrantc>
the freeze for wheezy is this month, so we're getting close to the end for new features
22:04
WaitiGer: if you want to help with development, it might make it feasible for wheezy+1 or for wheezy-backports
22:05
<WaitiGer>
I'm talkink about wheeze a1
22:06
I was talking about... sry :-)
22:07
<vagrantc>
a lot of the code is already there in the ltsp side, but the ltsp-cluster parts aren't available in any version of Debian yet
22:07
<WaitiGer>
where can i see the roadmap?
22:07
hm
22:08* vagrantc posts a Help Wanted sign
22:11
<WaitiGer>
so only ubuntu is supported?
