hi
08:32
I think it is more a ltsp question than a pxe one... so i try :)
08:32
On a PXE menu I have this :
08:32
LABEL LTSP
08:32
kernel IP_SERVEUR_LTSP::/ltsp/i386/vmlinuz root=/dev/ram1
08:32
vmlinuz loads great but kernel paniv with "root="
08:33
kernel panic, not syncing : VFS : Unable to mount root fs
08:33
I tried nearly everything in root=
08:33
any idea ? or proper chan for that ? thanks

Hi
08:42
If someone listening : I've got a problem with ltsp5 on Debian
08:43
I built the client with --dist squeeze option (need localapps, which are not included in lenny chroot)
08:43
When the client starts, I've got neither keyboard, nor mouse that works
08:44
<ogra>
squeeze is unstable
08:44
<zeltron>
Everything works fine with a chroot from Lenny, and with Ubuntu too)
08:44
<ogra>
make sure hal and dbus installed
08:45
its in flux atm, integrating ubuntu changes
08:46
<zeltron>
ogra : I know it's unstable... one week ago, I built a squeeze chroot that worked fine
08:46
hal and dbus are installed
08:46
I don't understand "its in flux atm

<zeltron>
ogra : what means "its in flux atm integrating ubuntu changes"?
08:57
<ogra>
vagrantc is integrating the ubuntu bits
08:58
in flux == in constant developmemt ... changing a lot

moldy: did you find a good way to logoff a user or poweroff the system? The "poweroff" capability of iTalc depends on gdm-signal, which isn't preinstalled and doesn't really work... :(

Hey guys, it's Chris from Resara... We were just talking about LTSP BTS and thought it'd be a good idea to do a presentation on some of the common issues between our software and the LTSP software and how we solved them.. We'd talk about things such as performance issues, optimizations to programs we've done, things like that...

alkisg: i did not work much on this since we last spoke
10:31
<alkisg>
moldy: I saw that italc has 3 diffferent commands for each DE :(
10:31
<moldy>
alkisg: yep, i saw that, too
10:31
<alkisg>
...and the gnome one no longer works :(
10:31
<moldy>
alkisg: for thin client shutdown, we will probably just use ssh
10:32
<alkisg>
Isn't that a little brutal?
10:32
<moldy>
alkisg: for logout, it seems you just need to find the right process and kill it
10:32
alkisg: why brutal?
10:32
alkisg: we have an intermediate solution for logout that is working right now, i think, but it will change
10:33
<alkisg>
Doesn't it cut the connection without giving any chance to the programs to save stuff or warn the user?
10:33
<moldy>
yes
10:33
but this is intended, i think, because it is an "admin" feature
10:35
i think it's supposed to force the client to shut down no matter what state it is in
10:35
<alkisg>
I think it would be better if the programs actually got notified with a signal, so that they would save any data in cache
10:36* alkisg tries to logoff with an unsaved text file in gedit to see what this does...
10:36
<moldy>
we could probably send sigterm to the ltsp session procs just before shutting down the client
10:37
<alkisg>
...yup, a warning... /me tests shutdown now...
10:37
<moldy>
otoh, i think they are signaled anyway (SIGHUP)... right?
10:37
<alkisg>
I don't know. But for example gnome actually cancels the shutdown if the user has unsaved data
10:38
That would be nice to have, at least as a warning before the "brutal" powering off
10:38
<moldy>
not sure how this is done in ltsp. normally, if the controlling terminal closes, the programs belonging to it get a sighup
10:38

14:17cg_uira has quit IRC
14:17
<johnny>
personally i'd prefer to use a writable / vagrantc
14:17
would make things much easier..
14:17
<ogra>
you cant with nfs ...
14:17
<johnny>
but kernels still have yet to implement something in mainline
14:18
<ogra>
even with aufs ...
14:18
<johnny>
hmm? really?
14:18
<ogra>
yep
14:18
they dont really like each other
14:18
unless that recently changed
14:18
<johnny>
i thought one of the selling points of aufs over unionfs was the ability to work with nfs
14:19
i'm suprised that readonly nfs is different than readonly anythingelse when it comes to using aufs tho..
14:19
<vagrantc>
johnny: sure, writeable / would be nice, but it comes with lots of other problems.
14:20
<ogra>
i think what aufs offers is to be able to export a merged aufs filesystem via nfs
14:20
not the other way around as we use it
14:20
<vagrantc>
i've definitely seen aufs work with NFS at one point, but it was unstable.
14:20
<ogra>
right
14:20
<johnny>
well.. i'm ok to switch to nbd as soon as i switch to dracut
14:21
but even then.. i can't rely on aufs
14:21
<ogra>
well, something is in the works upstream
14:21
<vagrantc>
fact of the matter is, debian (and fedora ?) default to using read-only NFS mounts, and it would be nice if people didn't assume writeable / all the time.
14:21
<ogra>
just a matter of time
14:21
definately
14:21
<johnny>
and gentoo vagrantc
14:21
<vagrantc>
and time is as far as we know, inifinite, so we're in good hands :)
14:22
<johnny>
ogra, you mean going in mainline?
14:22
<ogra>
its been worked on in mainline as i heard
14:22
just not ready
14:22
not sure it didnt stall though
14:22
<alkisg>
https://launchpad.net/vboxmount ==> uses nbd, so we could boot and customize a fat client with virtualbox :P :D

Hi all. The topic for this channel was set almost a year ago. What happened since?
19:10
Apparently I should introdce myself again. I am using LTSP for about 7 years now. But the only nickname I recognize here is sbalneav. What happened to jammcq?
19:16
I have successfully used LTSP 4.x on a Compaq Proliant during years. Recently I installed K12Linux with LTSP5 on a HP X4000 workstation. I had to overcome some minor installation hickups, but meanwhile it is running smoothly. Many thanks to the LTSP team and to Fedora core 10.
