ho de hum, is it normal to have problems with local devices? specifically, I've got a USB mass storage device and when plugged in locally, copying dies very quickly with 'couldn't allocate memory' and 'transport endpoint not connected'
02:07
not sure how much RAM it's trying to allocate, but it's got 1.5GB free on the client and 800MB free on the host
02:21
<johnny>
not a good time to ask

I have just used Jaunty alternate CD to install a LTSP server. However I only had ONE nic in at the time. Only at the end of the "successful" install was I told that I should install a second nic and set the dhcph interface in /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf to a static interface. Can anyone tell me what the line I must insert into this file should look like... Thank you!

hello friends
10:28
<denisesballs>
hey guys, where do you actually edit the layout of LDM? the greeter-gtkrc appears to just control colors and themes, i see no reference to the actual images in there
10:29
<knipwim>
The themes of the LDM greeter are stored in /opt/ltsp/x86/usr/share/ldm/themes where the symlink default points to the chosen theme.

<denisesballs>
yep, i got that
10:31
in each theme folder, there is a greeter-gtkrc file
10:31
but that doesnt appear to affect the layout, just the theme/colors
10:31
<ogra>
the image names are hardcoded in the greeter, just use the same names your new images

by default, LOCALDEV_DENY_INTERNAL_DISKS is True
16:37
which is why internal disks don't show up
16:39
<Pulga>
after that ltsp-update-image?
16:39
<Gadi>
nope
16:39
<Pulga>
where I find the HD?
16:39
<Gadi>
you use: /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i286/lts.conf
16:39
if you don't have one, make one
16:39
[dafault]
16:39
LOCALDEV_DENY_INTERNAL_DISKS=False
16:40
like that
16:40
<Pulga>
/opt/ltsp/i386
16:40
etc/lts.conf
16:40
<Gadi>
nope
16:40
<Pulga>
under ubuntu
16:40
<Gadi>
leave that one alone
16:40
create a file;
16:40
/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
16:40
and put two lines:
16:40
[dafault]
16:41
LOCALDEV_DENY_INTERNAL_DISKS=False
16:41
er, sorry
16:41
[default]
16:41
can't type today
16:41
:)
16:41
the thin client downloads lts.conf via tftp every time it boots
16:41
so you don't have to update the image
16:42
<Pulga>
I'll try
16:44
so, I will reboot now

I would like the thin client to be locked into chroot is that possible
16:47* Gadi still does not understand IBC_jkenney
16:47
<IBC_jkenney>
well if i login to the thin client I can actually see the servers file system
16:47
<Gadi>
no you cant
16:48
you're logging into the server
16:48
thats why you see the server's filesystem
16:48
if you log into the thin client console, you will only see the thin client filesystem
16:48bobbyC has quit IRC
16:49
<Gadi>
now, if you wanted to run your desktop and all of your applications locally, then you would only see the thin client filesystem
16:50
<IBC_jkenney>
oops your right (it really has been a long day)
16:50
<Gadi>
but, of course, then you are not really running a thin client
16:50
:)
16:50
<IBC_jkenney>
Ok but i am having problems locking it down. I want to create a NFS share and store the home directories there when the client boots
16:51
<Gadi>
easy enough
16:51
of course the first sentence is a non-sequitor to the second
16:51
<IBC_jkenney>
I also want the users to login to samba shares but create a script or something that will auto mount their shares based on their login
16:51
<Gadi>
and the client booting is not the causal event to the homedir being shared
16:52
all sounds prefectly resonable
16:52
I'm behind you 100%
16:53
<IBC_jkenney>
Ok the problems that i am having is i get some errors doing boot on the thin clients about NBD file system
16:53
I also want to lock down the profiles but sabayaon is broken
16:53
<Gadi>
again, a non-sequitor
16:53
hehe
16:53
<IBC_jkenney>
:)
16:54
<Gadi>
I can tell by your comments, that it is Friday
16:54
<IBC_jkenney>
i am under the gun and very tired and would like to spend the next hour just getting this crap done
16:54
<Gadi>
:)
16:54
ah, ok
16:54
hehe
16:54
well, first you gotta get your head around it
16:54
<IBC_jkenney>
Right and i'm having a problem with that today gimmie a sec to eat
16:54
<Gadi>
and tackle each thing independently
16:54
<IBC_jkenney>
something
16:54
i think thats my prob
16:55
(salad) :(
16:55
(diet) :(
16:55
<Gadi>
all the things you mentioned are, for the most part, independent issues
16:55
well, maybe not the eating thing
16:55
:)
16:56
IBC_jkenney: just keep in mind - its a dumb thin client
16:57
all the homedir, share-mounting, lockdown crap is on the server
16:57
the thin client "tunes in" a desktop like a TV set
16:57
<IBC_jkenney>
Ok first thing i'd like to get moving on i still have the problem where when I put a usb drive on one client it shows up on all the desktops
16:58
<Gadi>
hmm... that workaround should have fixed it
16:58
<IBC_jkenney>
can you resend the work around and let me double check it

just plug in a USB stick
17:09
<IBC_jkenney>
ok that is done
17:09
<Gadi>
did it work?
17:09
<IBC_jkenney>
yeah i must have did something wrong last time
17:09
<Gadi>
cool
17:09
<IBC_jkenney>
but can i be sneeky and block the use of removable media unless your the member of a special group
17:10
<Gadi>
well, if you are not a member of the "fuse" group, removable media doesnt work
17:10
so, yes
17:10
:)
17:10
<IBC_jkenney>
ok great
17:11
now i have a profile i created with the menu layout and the applications i want for regular end users can i do anything to make the profile default for all normal thin client users
17:12
<Gadi>
second time today someone asked me that
17:12
<IBC_jkenney>
was it me
17:12
in a different window lol
17:12
<Gadi>
no
17:12
:)
17:12
its been a while since I locked down things
17:13
I think most stuff gets recorded in ~/.config
17:13
when it comes to menus and such
17:13
honestly, I think you're better off with google than with me on this one
17:13
:)
17:13
<IBC_jkenney>
but the trick is when i add a new user to the system that profile is used
17:13
<Gadi>
right
17:13
<IBC_jkenney>
I tried google
17:13
<Gadi>
in theory, that's what sabayon is all about
17:13
<IBC_jkenney>
everyone says to use the GUI
17:14
yeah but it crashes
17:14
i even tried the fix
17:14
<Gadi>
so I hear
17:14
well, the way I would do it
17:14
which is prolly the poor-man's unsophisticated way
17:15
is to look and see what changes in the user's homedir that effects the changes I want
17:15
and then either write a login script to copy things in on login
17:15
or put it in /etc/skel or some such
17:15
<IBC_jkenney>
i was thinking of making it part of skel
17:15
;)
17:16
<Gadi>
and change ownership to root

17:16
<Gadi>
well, bookmarks are in a different place
17:17
actually, gnome's website should have some good docs
17:17
it is their desktop, after all
17:17
:)
17:17
anyhow, I totally need to get home
17:17
so short answers are:
17:17
<IBC_jkenney>
I understand
17:17
<Gadi>
NFS mount /home
17:17
<IBC_jkenney>
but i can get one more question
17:18
<Gadi>
from somewhere
17:18
<IBC_jkenney>
when I try to install zimbra-desktop
17:18
<Gadi>
(make it automatic in /etc/fstab)
17:18
<IBC_jkenney>
on a thin client
17:18
<Gadi>
and mount samba shares with pam_mount
17:18
<IBC_jkenney>
it gets stuck
17:18
it states it cannot find X
17:18
<Gadi>
(look at the ActiveDirectory integration thing on the wiki)
17:18
<IBC_jkenney>
ok
17:18
<Gadi>
install zimbra-desktop on the server
17:18
<IBC_jkenney>
Gadi thanks again when this is all done i'll have to send you a gift card or something
17:18
<Gadi>
not on the client
17:19
<IBC_jkenney>
ok
17:19
here is the other thing
17:19
<Gadi>
don't install stuff in the chroot
17:19
<IBC_jkenney>
the server for some reason is all of a sudden running in low resolutino mode
17:19
<Gadi>
keep the client dumb!
17:19
you mean when you are sitting at the server with a monitor plugged in?
17:19
<IBC_jkenney>
right
17:20
its a VM
17:20
actually
17:20
<Gadi>
ah
17:20
wrong drivers?
17:20
<IBC_jkenney>
I thought that i called VM
17:20
they say no
17:20
but i am suspect
17:20
we have a support contract
17:20
<Gadi>
well, check the server's /var/log/Xorg.0.log
17:20
it tells all
17:21
good luck, IBC_jkenney, and happy friday!
