<syrius>
hey all
02:34
anyone who can help me troubleshoot clients not connecting after upgrading packages on a opensuse 13.2 server?
02:34
i didn't see any ltsp updates
02:35anthonym has left IRC (anthonym!~anthonym@59-100-200-214.syd.static-ipl.aapt.com.au, Remote host closed the connection)
02:35anthonym has joined IRC (anthonym!~anthonym@59-100-200-214.syd.static-ipl.aapt.com.au)
02:36
<syrius>
there is /sbin/init-ltsp missing, which is referenced in the pxelinux.cfg/default file
02:36
cyberorg: are you around by chance?
02:44
<maldridge>
syrius: so you ran an update and now clients can't connect?
02:44
<syrius>
yeah, thin clients aren't getting dhcp
02:45
i haven't re-ran kiwi-ltsp-setup -c again or anything though
02:45
the main linux kernel did update though
02:46
i think maybe the /etc/sysconfig/kiwi-ltsp file got changed? but the mod date isn't different
02:46
i think we dropped AOE but it still states AOE & i586 in that file though we should be using the i386 image
02:47
<maldridge>
is it possible that your firewall rules were overwritten?
02:47
I'm not very familiar with openSUSE, so I'm not sure how much help I can be
02:47
<syrius>
i don't think the firewall is an issue. we use an external hardware firewall for everything
02:48
and that hasn't changed
02:48
<maldridge>
but if nothing is connecting, the server's firewall may be blocking it
02:50
<syrius>
hmm, i dunno. cyberorg helped me last time (january) and i finally did another round of updates
02:51
<maldridge>
my suggestion would be to stick around and see if someone more familiar with your server's OS can help
02:53
<syrius>
yep
02:53
will do, thanks

got it (i think)
03:19
whew
04:43
<cyberorg>
syrius, hi, whats the problem?
04:52Cruz4prez has left IRC (Cruz4prez!~pppingme@unaffiliated/pppingme, Quit: Leaving)
05:08
<syrius>
cyberorg: all taken care of :) I updated packages and the server restarted for the first time since january... vbladed ran automatically but i needed to run kiwi-ltsp-setup -c again
05:08
apparently some settings didn't stick through the restart
05:08
should that be in a boot script?
05:09
<cyberorg>
syrius, cool, running kiwi-ltsp -c should fix any config replaced by an update
05:09
<syrius>
ah i see.. i just couldn't find where a config would have been overwritten is why i was confused
05:10
all the timestamps on the config files were the same.. it was like a service wasn't running because the thin clients couldn't even connect, period
05:10
where-as before at least they could connect but they weren't able to load the image correctly on login
05:10
but i still had my notes from you helping me last time, in addition to being able to check the bash history
05:10
so thanks again for the previous help :)
05:11
<cyberorg>
you are welcome :)
05:18
<gehidore>
man lost 3 more boxes today to viri... I really need to get less lazy and get this shit up and online...
05:18
replaced one with a direct install of arch and a minified xfce with printing and usb hotplug support...
05:18
see them break that

Hi, I see LTSP is broken on Ubuntu 15.04? pxelinux.cfg stuff is not generated and also there seems to be some issues with NBD vs systemd?

<work_alkisg>
lauri, the pxelinux.cfg bug was fixed, but I don't know anything about the nbd/systemd one
14:43
Did you search bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp ?
14:47
What is the problem, exactly?
15:14
<muppis>
!lubuntu
15:14
<ltsp>
lubuntu: To fix login problem with Lubuntu-desktop check this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ltsp/+bug/1330252
15:14
<lauri>
work_alkisg: where was it fixed? The problem still persists in vanilla Ubuntu 15.04 install
15:34
<work_alkisg>
lauri: it was fixed upstream in the ltsp source tree, and it will probably be in ubuntu 15.10
15:34
But you didn't mention the nbd problem yet...
15:34
<lauri>
I am not sure what's going on
15:35
<work_alkisg>
What are the symptoms?
15:35work_alkisg is now known as alkisg
15:35
<lauri>
I am attempting to get anything going with 15.04 but I seem to bump roadblocks all the way
15:35
<alkisg>
Not many people are using non-LTS ubuntu releases, they're of low quality
15:36
We have an ltsp daily builds ppa with updated versions, they'll probably work better
15:36
But of course all bugs should be reported in launchpad
15:36
Do you have anything specific currently, other than the pxelinux.cfg one, which is already fixed upstream?
15:38
This is the one you mentioned: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ltsp/+bug/1387773
15:40
<lauri>
which PPA?
15:41
I am unable to get thin client booting on 15.04
15:41
It doesn't find the root
15:41
I tried both - NFS and NBD
15:41
and I am currently attempting to bootstrap another container
15:43
<alkisg>
https://launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/+archive/ubuntu/daily
15:43
You need that in both the server and the chroot
15:43
Or, try 14.04 or 15.10
15:44
<lauri>
okay

So
16:24
Plain Ubuntu 15.10, installed ltsp-server-standalone
16:24
in.tftpd is seen under ps aux, but TFTP just times out
16:28
well
16:28
it seems because TFTP_ADDRESS="[::]:69"
16:28
who the hell thought binding to only IPv6 address is a good idea?
16:33
now the kernel boots and after DHCP request it says overlayfs missing 'workdir'

17:46
<lauri>
the locale bug is still present in Debian 8's LTSP scripts
17:46
only way to bootstrap client is with LANG=C
17:56work_alkisg is now known as alkisg
17:56
<alkisg>
lauri, are you using debian 8 or ubuntu 15.10?
17:56cyberorg has left IRC (cyberorg!~cyberorg@opensuse/member/Cyberorg, Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
17:57
<alkisg>
Btw, why aren't you sticking to LTS releases which are more stable? They have new kernels, xorg etc... what are you missing from those?
17:58
Remember to file bug reports for whatever issues you find, although the workdir issue is already solved afaik
17:59
About tftpd, I'm not using it, but check if a related bug reports exists in the tftpd-hpa package (not in ltsp)
17:59* alkisg is using dnsmasq
17:59
<alkisg>
About the "debian 8 locale bug", I've never heard of it... is it there in the debian bug tracker?
18:06cyberorg has joined IRC (cyberorg!~cyberorg@opensuse/member/Cyberorg)
18:09
<lauri>
I am testing many versions now
18:09
so to summarize
18:09
On Debian 8 jessie client boots okay, 14.04 LTS also client boots okay
18:09
15.04 and 15.10 are broken
18:10
We need to upgrade stuff
18:10
we need OpenSSH 6.7 which is included starting from 15.04
18:10
I'd also like to migrate to systemd now
18:10
customer depends on software available only for Ubuntu 14.04 and 15.04
18:11
locale bug is present for all distros I've tested since 12.04
18:11
LANG=C ltsp-build-client works around it
18:14
obviously we're not going to ship 15.04 or 15.10 for production system :D
18:14
so I have to make something happen with 14.04 and demo a PoC with Debian perhaps
18:32
<alkisg>
lauri, what is the locale bug, does it error out and with what command and output?
18:32
15.10 doesn't yet fully use systemd, does it?
18:33
and I'm guessing it should be easy to use a newer openssh in 14.04... maybe with a ppa
18:33
<lauri>
Ubuntu uses systemd starting from 15.04
18:33
<alkisg>
lauri, run ps and check for upstart
18:33
It's still using upstart to manage user sessions, doesn't it?
18:35
<lauri>
I am not moron
18:36
15.04 is with systemd instead of upstart
18:36
<alkisg>
lauri, noone is sayin that you're a moron or not
18:36
<lauri>
the locale error happens if you're not living in Murrica
18:36
root@ltspjessie:~# ltsp-build-client
18:36
cp: `/etc/locale.gen' ja `//etc/locale.gen' on üks ja sama fail
18:36
error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally
18:36
<alkisg>
I believe that 15.04 is using systemd for init, and upstart for user sessions
18:36
and I was asking you to verify that
18:36
Let me check in 15.10...
18:37
<lauri>
on 15.10 this bug doesn't happen indeed
18:37
Debian 8 jessie is still affected
18:37
I have 5+ containers with LTSP here so I might mix up few bits
18:37
<alkisg>
Yup, upstart and systemd in 15.10, like I said
18:37
<lauri>
what a horrible spaghetti :D
18:38
I assumed that they completely switched
18:39
<alkisg>
lauri, it sounds like ltsp-build-client is not using a correct path for base, e.g. /opt/ltsp
18:39
And that it's trying to copy locale.gen in the same place
18:39
Maybe you have a wrong configuration file?
18:40
<lauri>
the locale bug happens with vanilla packages as well
18:40
just try switching to other locale
18:40
<alkisg>
I'm greek, I've always been using non-US locales
18:40
<lauri>
yasas :D
18:40
<alkisg>
Hehe :)
18:41
<lauri>
I've written LANG=C to most of my howtos
18:41
<alkisg>
It shouldn't be needed
18:42
Do you have some configuration file, or some environment variable defined that breaks ltsp-build-client.
18:42
?
18:43
<lauri>
no
18:43
I've done this several iterations already
18:43
clean LXC containers
18:43
also in real virtual machines
18:43
apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone
18:43
ltsp-build-client and kaboom
18:44
whenever the host is switched to Estonian
18:50
<alkisg>
Try running it with `sh -x ltsp-build-client` to get a debug log
18:50
I think there's also an ltsp-build-client --debug or something
18:50
It runs fine here with LANG=el_GR.UTF-8
