Hello , anyone in here managed to cluster LTSP in a easy way?
09:16
<sep>
i belive you can use a list of servers on LDM_SERVER or a script that checks "load/usage/whatever" and returns a server and the client with use that server.
09:16
<stgraber>
Appiah: We develop ltsp-cluster at Revolution Linux
09:16
<sep>
no hot failover tho
09:16
<stgraber>
Appiah: https://wiki.stgraber.org/LTSP-Cluster
09:16
<sep>
i have not used it in production. but i have tested it and it works
09:18
<Appiah>
stgraber oh , is that package done in ubuntu now?
09:18* Appiah fires up the ltsp labb

Appiah, the ltsp-cluster stuff does load balancing and decides to which server your client logs in based on the load a server has ... so indeed its a matter of client *and* server

How do I assign special drivers based on PCI ID? I have found what appears to be assignment here: /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci, but making changes doesn't seem to work.
10:59
<stgraber>
Appiah: there are some docs available on the wiki (https://wiki.stgraber.org/LTSP-Cluster), it's basically installing the packages and changing a few variables
10:59
<_UsUrPeR_>
I am trying to get the via drivers to be loaded automatically instead of the openchrome drivers for the PCI ID 11063122

Hey, #ltsp. I've just put together my first Ubuntu-based terminal server, and I've noticed a bit of a hitch involving local usb devices, like thumb drives: when you pop one in a thin client, it shows up on everyone's desktop. Has anyone else bumped into this?
11:15
<vagrantc>
Keaton: probably your users need to be in their own primary group
11:15
Keaton: using ldap or some other remote authentication?
11:16
<Keaton>
Yup, LDAP.

Is there some way to change the PnP mount script to make it accessible to the user that initiates it, rather than the group, that you know of?
11:23
<vagrantc>
you'd have to patch the C code and recompile the ltspfs package

<cyberorg>
vagrantc, you experimented a bit with nbd cow, how did it go?
11:23
<Keaton>
Urck. That's a bit over my head. Thanks anyway, though.
11:23
<vagrantc>
Keaton: just figure out how to add each user to their own primary group (the first group)
11:24
<Keaton>
vagrantc: That is my plan B, but it's a bit messy on the server end, so I was hoping for a way around it.
11:24
<vagrantc>
cyberorg: long time ago ... don't really remember. filed a few bugs as a result...
11:24
cyberorg: bugs on NBD
11:24
Keaton: less messy than your other options :)
11:25
<cyberorg>
vagrantc, ah, this is in continuation of our pursuit of finding aufs alternative :)
11:27
<vagrantc>
cyberorg: NBD cow should work great, but there were a few limitations ... like it only allowed you to write to the cow file if the source file was writeable, it had to sit right next to the source file, that sort of thing...
11:29
cyberorg: http://bugs.debian.org/470963
11:30

vagrantc, discussion there seem to have died on that bug

<ogra>
_UsUrPeR_, on my way out, whats up ?
13:08
<_UsUrPeR_>
wondering how a server selects which driver to use for a client's video card
13:08
I'm looking in here: /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci
13:08
Where I see the PCI addresses
13:08
<ogra>
right
13:08
thats how it works nowadays
13:08
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok, so I have reassigned a PCI device to use the via drivers instead of openchrome
13:08
<ogra>
if there is no xorg.conf it will look at the PCI ID and assign the right driver to it
13:09
<_UsUrPeR_>
yet it still boots w/openchrome. is there someplace else I need to check?
13:09
ogra: yeah, no xorg.conf here. I need this automated in case our customer is using a combo of via and intel-based thinclients
13:09
<ogra>
there are several layers of mechanisms though for backwards compatibility, i'd suggest talking to tjaalton or bryce or someone else in #ubuntu-x
13:10
<_UsUrPeR_>
ogra: rgr. what is their capacity?
13:10hanthana has quit IRC
13:10
<ogra>
they know more about it than me
13:10
<_UsUrPeR_>
ok, cool. thanks a lot
13:10
<warren>
_UsUrPeR_: it is harad coded in a C source file
13:10
_UsUrPeR_: it doesn't use the text tables during runtime
13:11
_UsUrPeR_: some distros add their own non-standard detection before xorg.conf
13:11
<_UsUrPeR_>
warren: oh. is that for both ubuntu and fedora? I'm using ubuntu right now
13:11
<warren>
_UsUrPeR_: Ubuntu I think uses a non-standard detection thing before xorg.conf, but that isn't used with LTSP I think.
13:11
<ogra>
afaik there are three layered detection mechanisms
13:11
<warren>
_UsUrPeR_: Fedora has a blank xorg.conf and relies on X autodetection
13:11
<ogra>
the upstream one is first in ubuntu
13:11
if that fails it falls back to /usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/<card>.ids
13:12
and if that doesnt work there is another one i dont remember we inherit from debian
13:12
xorg.conf overrides them all
13:12
<warren>
how do you detect if it fails?
13:12
X itself would fail to start if that fails.
13:13
<ogra>
right
13:13
<warren>
sometimes fail means "get stuck and don't exit"
13:13
<ogra>
instead of failing it parses the ids
13:13
as you said, if it doesnt find a matching hardcoded id it moves on to the .ids files
13:14
<warren>
oh, that kind of fail
13:14
<ogra>
right
13:14
and if that fails there is a debconf based mechanism iirc
13:14
and if that fails too there is vesa
13:15
and the ubuntu config tool
13:15
which automatically tarts up on non thin clients to help you configure an xorg.conf
