<john_s__>
what are the main differences between the way ubuntu 10.04 LTS handles TC's versus they way Debian 7 does? I am trying to understand the role of NFS on Debian, and where to put desktop environment and software for Fat Clients
22:43john_s_ has left IRC (john_s_!a8d4f382@gateway/web/freenode/ip.168.212.243.130, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
22:44
<john_s__>
somehow I managed to log in three times
22:46
I installed a minimal version of debian 7 and am having no luck adding gnome so that the thin/fat clients can use it. I can't tell if I am suppossed to install all of that in the chroot or not
22:46
I seem to remember the right approach in Ubuntu was to install the Desktop version and not the server version
22:47
perhaps that's my mistake here. I should have gone for a full Desktop environment instead of trying to add ti later
22:47
<maldridge>
you can install the server version
22:47
you just have to then pick up the packages that are needed out of your DE of choice
22:48
<john_s__>
@maldridge should I be install my DE inside the chroot or on the server itself?
22:48
I am having all kinds of dependency issues from within the chroot
22:48
<maldridge>
server itself
22:48
you would just install it like a normal machine
22:49
<john_s__>
@maldrige thank you. What is the difference between the debian NFS approach and the Ubuntu nbd approach?
22:50
<maldridge>
nbd is approx. 5 times faster, and scales better
22:50
nfs has some notable security issues depending on how your environment is set up
22:51
iirc, you can't modify the nbd fs online though
22:53
<john_s__>
Thanks, and does all configuration for the thin clients still happen via the lts.conf file that lives in the tftpboot directory?
22:54
<maldridge>
I don't really override anything from the defaults, but that is where all my config lives
22:55
<john_s__>
@maldridge, thanks for your help. As an aside are there any known issues with using the web version of IRC from iceweasel I kept getting chucked off
22:57
<maldridge>
I've never had any issues with freenode's webclient, but I have had issues with those of other networks. You might need to doublecheck that you're on the latest version
22:59
<john_s__>
ok, thanks for your help
23:00
<maldridge>
np
23:05
<john_s__>
@maldridge is gnome-fallback still the correct name for gnome2 type sessions in lts.conf?
23:09
<maldridge>
not sure, its been a long time since I've dealt with anything gnome related
23:11
<john_s__>
@maldridge ok, thanks, struggling a bit to get TC desktop to load. My lts.conf says LDM_SESSION="gnome-fallback" should work
23:12
<maldridge>
good luck, I run exlusively xfce for thin things now
23:13
<john_s__>
@maldridge I'd be interested in checking xfce out if I could make it look a bit better, have you got it set up to look pretty good (e.g. not like win95)
23:14bobby_C has left IRC (bobby_C!~bobby@85-124-22-227.teleworker.xdsl-line.inode.at, Quit: Goin' down hard)
23:15
<maldridge>
what!? the windows 95 look is fantastic!
23:15
<john_s__>
xubuntu looks quite good out of the box
23:15
heh!
23:15
<maldridge>
actually I've got it skinned with my LUG's artwork, looks pretty nice
23:16gdi2k has joined IRC (gdi2k!~gdi2k@49.151.10.76)
23:17
<john_s__>
@maldridge is that done for a central config file, or are there a bunch of config files which need to be managed when you change the DE look/options?
23:19
<maldridge>
I build out the theme as its own package and keep it on a local mirror
23:20
I forget how it actually get set as the default, it was a while ago that I got that working
23:20
<john_s__>
nice idea, so apt-get your package and it ends up looking like you want it to?
23:20
<maldridge>
more or less
23:22
<john_s__>
so if I want to run some or all of my applications "fat" those still live in the chroot, but my DE is installed via the Server environment
23:22
@maldridge returning to older topic with the last question
23:22
<maldridge>
I've never played around with fat clients, I don't have a need for that in my environment
23:23
but that sounds correct
23:24
<john_s__>
Thanks for your help! I appreciate it. I do this so seldom that I have to start from scratch every time I iterate. Bye
