hola
04:08
I've just gotten LTSP running under Debian Wheezy but don't understand what I'm doing :) I'd like to open a terminal (xterm, rxvt) but I can't find it in any of the menus or in the filesystem.
04:09
I chrooted in /opt/ltsp/i386 and did an apt-get install rxvt-unicode which seemed to work, but I still can't find the binary after rebooting the thin client. I'm guessing that NFS directory is not what is actually being used? I don't know. Would appreciate any pointers. thanks.

I am testing a ltsp setup (using VMs) when I boot the client it does start ... but does't show a login request ... I have lts.conf setup for "shell" and "ldm" ... I can switch to the "shell" screen ... but the "ldm" only shows a "_" (i.e. its blank) ... can I manually start ldm from the "shell" screen?
06:41
<[LaSaK]>
yea u can login via ssh

why does the chroot environment have a etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key file but after a ltsp-update-image the client does not have an /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key ?

How can I use LTSP without DHCP?
11:39
And is it possible to copy a working system to an LTSP image?
11:42
Because the desktop I have is different than the server I want to supply the images from
12:34
<Hyperbyte>
AlexPortable, why do you want to use LTSP without DHCP?
12:34
<AlexPortable>
Because I already have a router that supplies dhcp
12:34
<Hyperbyte>
LTSP is a system for netbooting client images. Netboot requires DHCP.
12:38
<AlexPortable>
So what can I o?
12:38
do*
12:38
Should I just tell some people that the network isn't available during work hours?
12:39
Because I need 5 thin clients
12:45

AlexPortable, google dnsmasq proxy
13:02
<AlexPortable>
gives me this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP
13:02
but I don't really understand what it is
13:07
<cyberorg>
it lets you use existing dhcp server with ltsp
13:08
<AlexPortable>
How does it works?
13:08
<cyberorg>
ip is given by other server/router and client pxe boots from ltsp server
13:09
<AlexPortable>
ah
13:09
Is it hard to configure?

AlexPortable, just read that page carefully, everything you need is there :)
13:12
<AlexPortable>
ok
13:12
How do I copy a current running system to an image?
13:13
<cyberorg>
!ltsp-pnp
13:13
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
13:18
<AlexPortable>
Huh
13:18
How will that copy my current system to an image?
13:22
<muppis_>
Just like from chroot.

<alkisg>
AlexPortable: to publish your working image through ltsp, you at least need to install the ltsp-client package, you can't publish it without changing anything...
14:57
And if you install ltsp-server too, like the ltsp-pnp page says, you also get the tools to do it inside your desktop system instead of outside of it
14:58
And if you install proxydhcp like the ltsp-pnp page says, then you solve the problem with your router too
14:58
But maybe you should describe all your setup first, in order to have the best advice...
15:15
<AlexPortable>
Well can I somehow copy the system to another system?
15:15
and make the change there?
15:16
<alkisg>
Sure you can clone linux boxes, google, there are many ways to do that
15:16
<AlexPortable>
My setup; I have a laptop, which contains an up-to-date install of the distro I choose. I can't install any additional software (ltsp-client or similar) on it. I have a server that can distribute the images (it's currently a web and fileserver). And I have normal internet connection with a router that does DHCP. I have 5 laptops without an HDD so I want to
15:16
use LTSP for them.
15:16
<alkisg>
If you can't install ltsp-client, then you can't use ltsp
15:17vmlintu has left IRC (vmlintu!~vmlintu@a91-152-200-70.elisa-laajakaista.fi, Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
15:17
<alkisg>
LTSP client images need the ltsp-client package in order to boot, if you don't have it installed then you're not using ltsp
15:17
<AlexPortable>
Well can I somehow copy the files to an harddisk and make the image from there?
15:17
<alkisg>
Yes, google for "clone linux box"
15:18
<AlexPortable>
Yes I know how to clone
15:18
But that makes an clonezilla image.
15:18
Which doesn't contains the ltsp-client package
15:18
<alkisg>
You can't make an ltsp image without the ltsp-client package
15:18
Clone with rsync then
15:18
Not with clonezilla
15:18
Or with dd. or with tar...

15:19
<alkisg>
Or even with clonezilla, but restore it to the target system, don't just copy it
15:19
Anyway all that isn't about ltsp...
