good evening everyone (well it's evening in the USA)
03:24
does anyone know of a good LTSP simultaneous usage calculator?
03:25
I'm trying to figure out how many simultaneous LTSP terminals I can support with this Phenom II X6 3.2ghz CPU & 8-gig of RAM

assuming they are doing simple word documents and general web surfing using Firefox or Chrome (no video)

perhaps its trying to launch rdesktop too early and the xserver hasn't started....
15:31
<alkisg>
rdeskop isn't installed by default in recent ubuntu versions
15:31
xfreerdp is preferred instead
15:33

so if i just did a symlink from xfreerdp binary to my script it should work? might have to lose a few arguments i guess.

<blakes>
Just so I can close the loop, and provided that these sessions live somewhere on the interwebs, I found the solution to my thin client being unable to connect to the internet problem
16:52
Upon reboot after update, isc-dhcp-server took over from dnsmasq for some reason, and the defaults in the /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf was to make 192.168.0.1 the default route......
16:53
<alkisg>
"took over from dnsmasq"? You have dnsmasq as a dhcp server? 2 of them?
16:53
<blakes>
my default route is the thin client-side interface of the ltsp server at 192.168.0.254.
16:54
alkisg: I had initially set up dnsmasq to handle dhcp services, yes and disabled isc-dhcp-server.... it may have been you who suggested to do so back in Aug
16:55
<alkisg>
Why disable instead of uninstall?
16:55
<blakes>
don't remember... was a long time ago, computer-wise ;)
16:56
The config got blown away, presumably by a recent update.... just a guess
16:57
took a little while to figure out, but ssh'ed to the thin client and discovered the routing problem, then worked backward from there.
16:59
I don't know if you remember, but this was an upgrade from 10.04 -> 12.04 and the transition to dnsmasq and nbd-server was a bit small bit of crazy.

hello
17:52
i have a question
17:52
<vagrantc>
the channel awaits your question(s)
17:52
<ltspuser_73>
i have a debian squeeze filesystem and i'm using ldm
17:53
some applications like firefox, thunderbird, etc don't have the same theme as gnome
17:54
the menu of firefox stays grey instead of dark
17:55
like nautilus
17:55
<vagrantc>
does it behave differently when using LTSP?
17:57
<ltspuser_73>
the behave is the same but the theme of certain applications like firefox, thunderbird is different from ubuntu's theme
17:58
<vagrantc>
so you want to have a similar theme across applications?
17:58
<ltspuser_73>
yes
17:59
exactly
17:59
<vagrantc>
themeing is not my forte :(
18:00
<ltspuser_73>
not mine too :)

<knipwim>
does ubuntu or debian have support for the --packages option in ltsp-build-client?
18:10
for a list of extra packages to install
18:11
<vagrantc>
there's --early-packages, --late-packages and --kernel-package son debian
18:12
and --backports-packages, --pin-packages ...
18:12
but no --packages
18:13
<knipwim>
gentoo only had --packages, i was wondering what to write in the wiki
18:13
s/had/has/
18:13
<vagrantc>
could implement --packages easily enough, would probably just either append to --late-packages or --early-packages
18:15
if we wanted to come up with a more standard list of options that distros need to support
18:16
<knipwim>
good idea
18:17
i'll make a note of common options in the wiki

Good afternoon. I hope you are all doing well. I am using Edubuntu 12.04 and loving LTSP. Question: how can I make sure that changes to lts.conf are occurring? Is there a "hello world" sort of thing to make sure the thin clients are reading it?

<vagrantc>
TheProf: set SCREEN_07=shell
20:28
TheProf: it should just drop you to a shell instead of a graphical environment.
20:29
<muppis>
vagrantc, I created a LVM afterall. :D
20:30
<TheProf>
vagrantc: Great thanks! And this should work under the [default] section correct?
20:30
<muppis>
TheProf, yes.
20:30
<vagrantc>
muppis: you just didn't... notice? :)
20:31
<muppis>
It can be put that way. :)

what's a good way to take a screenshot of a thin client from the server? I've tried something like "ksnapshot --display=192.168.0.81:1.0" or gnome-snapshot but that doesnt seem to work
22:34
does that need to actually run on the thin client?
22:42
<alkisg>
If you are root, you can bypass the xorg authentication and do it, but it'd be better to use a tool that can do that, like e.g. epoptes
22:42
!epoptes

<ltsp>
epoptes: Epoptes is a computer lab administration and monitoring tool. It works on Ubuntu and Debian based labs with LTSP or non-LTSP servers, thin and fat clients, standalone workstations, NX clients etc. More info: http://www.epoptes.org
