vagrantc: or we could sneak the change in upstream :P
00:30
<vagrantc>
quick, warren's not looking!
00:30
<Ryan52>
hehe
00:31
<vagrantc>
Ryan52: i'd say the bugfix raphael pointed out should go upstream, but i still think we should patch around the "use our own eval_gettext implementation" mess, at least in debian.
00:31try2free has joined #ltsp
00:32
<Ryan52>
I still don't know what raphael was talking about..
00:32
can you make the change really quickly and show me the diff?
00:34
<ltsppbot>
"vagrantc" pasted "possible security to our hackish eval_gettext function in ldm-script" (13 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/361
00:34* vagrantc changes native languages
00:37

00:39
<vagrantc>
i've already got patches to remove all that cruft.
00:39
<Ryan52>
hm...how does that work?
00:39
whatever, I don't care :P
00:42
<vagrantc>
Ryan52: interestingly enough, you were the committer who committed all eval_gettext workaround stuff.
00:43
<Ryan52>
oops
00:43* Ryan52 always does all of the bad commits in ltsp :P
00:44
<vagrantc>
well, you've done plenty of good ones to make up for it :)
00:44
<Ryan52>
well I didn't write it, I don't use $*. :)
00:44* Ryan52 still doesn't know the difference between $* and $@
00:44
<vagrantc>
i'm sure it was on behalf of fedora or something

hi all, i've not done any LTSP for a while, have deployed muekow successfully in the distant past. i have a question - i'm looking at LTSP for a new deployment of EPOS (till) workstations, but it's crucial that each till somehow knows which physical machine it's running on.
09:57
of course, currently we just call hostname, but in an LTSP environment, hostname returns the server hostname. is there any workaround?
09:58
i remember that printers and sound can be piped across the network to an LTSP workstation, so they can't be /that/ ignorant of their "real" identity :)
09:58
any assistance appreciated
09:58
<vagrantc>
use $SSH_CLIENT
09:59
should give you the ip address of the thin client
10:00
<antgel>
vagrantc: well, that seems straightforward enough. i'd rather have hostnames but i can have fake "hostnames" in the application database and map them to the $SSH_CLIENT addresses
10:01
<vagrantc>
sure
10:07
<antgel>
vagrantc: thanks a lot *crosses fingers ;) *

does the if substring( option vendor-class-identifier, 0, 9 ) = "PXEClient" { line in the dhcpd.conf file make the DHCP server only respond to that subnet if it's a PXE Client? i already have another dhcp server on this network and i want to use this dhcp server only for the LTSP clients, not the "normal" workstations
10:34
i've already commented out 'authoratitive'
10:36
or do i have to include all my LTSP workstation mac addresses in dhcpd.conf?
10:37
<alkisg>
antgel: it answers to pxeclient but not to ipconfig. What distro?
10:37hanthana_ has joined #ltsp

alkisg: debian
10:37
(lenny)
10:37
<alkisg>
Hmmm not sure what debian uses in the initramfs, I guess it's ipconfig?
10:38
!pastebot
10:38
<ltspbot`>
alkisg: "pastebot" is The LTSP pastebot is at http://pastebot.ltsp.org. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebot, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. A link to the content will be pasted in the channel.
10:40
<antgel>
alkisg: not a clue. basically there's already a DHCP server on this network serving .100 - .200. i've set up this second dhcp server to serve .240-.250. what do i need to do to ensure that the second server only responds to the PXE machines on the network?
10:40
that's what my question /should have been/
10:40
<vagrantc>
it's ipconfig, yeah.
10:40
<antgel>
vagrantc: oh, good, saved me asking what i need to paste :)
10:40
<alkisg>
antgel: you may easily do that for the initial boot, but you'll have trouble doing it for the second dhcp request
10:41
<vagrantc>
two DHCP servers = pain
10:41
<alkisg>
So when ipconfig asks a lease, it'll get it from the first one available
10:42
<antgel>
FFS. so it might be best for me to drop the first server (an ADSL modem / router)
10:42
<alkisg>
You can bypass that by putting 'IPAPPEND 3' to /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default,
10:43
or you could use the latest dnsmasq (need compiling from source) that functions as a proxydhcp server => you'll only have the router as a dhcp server
10:43
The dnsmasq dev has done this just for this kind of setups
10:43
<antgel>
alkisg: that doesn't seem like a whole lot of trouble (IPAPPEND 3), what's the drama with that?
10:44
<alkisg>
No big drama, but it's a hack
10:44
<antgel>
alkisg: i know less about dnsmasq than dhcpd - this is just for a trial system - let's get something up and running and worry about elegance later :)
10:45
<ltsppbot>
"alkisg" pasted "example dhcpd.conf for when also a router-dhcpd is present" (41 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/362

ok, use this ^^^ as a template (sorry for the greek comments in it)
10:46
<antgel>
alkisg: with this level of free support, you don't need to apologise :)
10:46

10:47

10:47
<alkisg>

10:47
<antgel>
next it'll be telling me to do rm -rf :)
10:47
<vagrantc>
well, that's easy enough to regenerate
10:47
<alkisg>
And finally do: ln -s ltsp/i386/lts.conf /var/lib/tftpboot/lts.conf
10:48
<vagrantc>
huh?
10:48
<alkisg>
That's to enable it to find lts.conf after the hack in IPAPPEND 3
10:48
<vagrantc>
no, lts.conf is pulled right from NFS. not used in debian.
10:48
<alkisg>
See latest Gadi's patch, it fixes that... (empty tftppath)
10:48
Ah sorry
10:48
So it's not in tftpboot dir?
10:49
<vagrantc>
right- no reason to, as you can edit /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf directly
10:49
<antgel>
right, well i'll nip downstairs and try to boot this thing up
10:52
okay, it got an ip but hung at TFTP... i'll check the tftp server and syslog

11:38
<antgel>
no, no joy, does anyone have a clue?
11:39
i tried option root-path "192.168.1.200:/opt/ltsp/i386";
11:40
same thing, starts to boot then nfsmount: need a path just scrolls up the screen, and i can see just before that the workstation's rootpath is blank
11:42
i'm also getting tftp: client does not accept options in syslog - not sure if that's important
11:50
<alkisg>
antgel: it's because of ipappend 3
11:50
<antgel>
okay, i've worked out that even though it PXE boots successfully, when the kernel tries to get the IP address with ipconfig, it's getting it from the wrong DHCP server
11:50
<alkisg>
antgel: really, try dnsmasq :)
11:51
<antgel>
alkisg: should the ipappend be in capitals? maybe it's not working
11:51
<alkisg>
can you pass the ntfroot as a kernel parameter?
11:51hanthana_ is now known as hanthana
11:51
<alkisg>
Is it a PXE client, or an etherboot one?
11:51
<antgel>
alkisg: i would, but even though it's a hack, ipappend was appealing. i need to try getting something up in next 1/2 hour, and learning dnsmasq is not appealing (this week)
11:51
it's PXE
11:52
<alkisg>
what do you have in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default now?
11:52
<antgel>
alkisg: DEFAULT vmlinuz ro initrd=initrd.img quiet root=/dev/nfs ip=dhcp boot=nfs IPAPPEND 3
11:52
<alkisg>
IPAPPEND 3 should be on a seperate line AFAIK
11:53
and remove ip=dhcp
11:53
<antgel>
alkisg: i'll be back in a minute!
11:53
<alkisg>
In essence, IPAPPEND 3 constructs an ip=the-ip-from-dhcpd.conf kernel parameter
11:55
...and try to include nfsroot=xxx in the kernel parameters there
11:57
<antgel>
alkisg: no joy, ipconfig contacted the right DHCP server, but it got the wrong DNS address and rootpath was still blank. i'll try setting nfsroot
11:58
<alkisg>
Wrong dns address? That's a dhcpd.conf issue
11:59
<antgel>
alkisg: not according to http://pastebot.ltsp.org/363
11:59
should be .1 - ipconfig thought it was .200
12:00
<alkisg>
antgel: ah right ipconfig doesn't have a dns parameter: http://codtech.com/wiki/index.php/Ipconfig#interface_spec_long_form
12:00
So you'll have to put that in lts.conf
12:00
But it shouldn't matter if you use IPs in nfsroot etc
12:01
<johnny>
would be nice to see ipconfig disappeared
12:01
<alkisg>
Amen! :)
12:01
<johnny>
why doesn't ubuntu use udhcp in the initramfs?
12:01
<alkisg>
It does
12:01
It's just not the default client yet
12:01
It'll be default in 9.10
12:01
<johnny>
so.. how can you fix the initramfs to use it?
12:02
btw.. this tells me why my gentoo setup was so easy to use a seperate server
12:02
<alkisg>
chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install udhcpc && ltsp-update-image
12:02
<johnny>
uhmm.. in the initramfs?
12:02
how does that work?
12:02
<alkisg>
Right, and update-kernels
12:02
<johnny>
ah
12:02
so it automatically looks for it? no stuff to do with initramfs-tools?
12:03
<alkisg>
Yes, in 9.04
12:03
<johnny>

12:03

antgel: ipconfig-related knowledge is useless, really :(
12:08
johnny: actually I was wrong about ltsp-update-image, this is the correct way:
12:08
`Real dhcp client support, installing udhcpc in the chroot, then running "update-initramfs -u" will install a real dhcp client that'll renew its leases. `
12:08
..and ltsp-update-kernels after that.
