greets vagrantc ... any news on whether u're coming to Sevilla?
nubae: i'm going to check out the trains tomorrow ... i might spend a couple days here, a few days in sevilla, and maybe a few in granada before heading back
cool, Granada is really nice, especially the Alhambra
and if u like hiking, going up to Sierra Nevada is especially nice too
and it being the hottest time of the year, who would be foolish enough to go to sevilla or granada?
nubae: yeah, definitely hoping to get into the mountains ...
yeah, Sevilla is pretty hot, Granada will be better
speaking of hiking... there's a day-hike ... haven't really left the venue since i got here ... so gotta run
have fun :-)

highvoltage, I'm actually working with jaunty... perhaps updating to karmic will fix things?
Thing is I was following instructions using openvnz from stgraber's wiki... I guess there shouldn't be too much difference if I upgrade virtual machines to karmic...
nubae: hmm, where did you install the ltsp-cluster packages from?
nubae: ah, yes, I believe there has been some upstream fixes since his ppa packages as well
nubae: if it's just testing, then it would be very useful trying out the karmic packages out on karmic
nubae: although I haven't tested it enough myself yet so I can't recomment it at all for a production environment
yeah, cool, will upgrade
its not production, I'm testing to see how it works, and then we deploy in September
hopefully its a solution that will work out for our older schools in our autonomous region
I had so many places I could use it a while back. Not sure where I'll use it now but I'm sure they'll pop up :)
in their infinite wisdom the newer schools all have cutting edge wireless connections :/
so they'll run wireless for a year maybe, then realise it doesn't work, and have to cable everything up...
|03:14||* nubae can't decide if wireless is a blessing or a curse|
it's a blessing... but not if it's abused
well, the biggest issue is that it seems to be in fashion, so people think they are upgrading by eliminating a perfectly good wired infrastructure
which in the case of schools, is a really bad idea

Hello, I am having a problem that I was hoping to get some help with. I have an Ubuntu LTSP server that is serving a "fat" client image to about 12 clients. Everything is working great, but most mornings when I come in to work at least half the clients are completely locked up and require a reboot. Does anyone have any ideas of why this would be happening or where I could look in the logs to pinpoint the problem?
sbalneav: sabayon seems closer now. It opened a window first, then crashed.
here's the logs:
"_UsUrPeR_" pasted "sbalneav -- new logs for sabayon problem" (24 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/455

I followed the instructions here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPFatClients

rbla1: next time it happens, log in on tty1 and check how much memory you have and such. If you are running services that are continuously logging, it could be that over night, the systems are filling up the available RAM with logs
you probably should uninstall syslog on the client entirely
|09:41||rbla1 has quit IRC|
ace_suares: nowhere. haven't had a job since November and wasted most of the months that followed fighting government offices just to get my unemployment money.
thanks Gadi i can't do anything once I log into TTY1 so no way of checking RAM, but I will uninstall syslog and see if that makes a difference.

Yes, everything should be on a UPS.
rbla11: do you have cron jobs active? The fat client script seems to be doing some cleaning for them, but maybe it leaves something behind?
the only cronjob that runs on the client removes pdf files from the /tmp folder every minute. (* * * * * /bin/rm /tmp/*.pdf)

hey, about a couple of years ago we tried to use some thin clients with AMD Geode processor and we had problems with video.
Anybody here use geode processors with LTSP ?
I need to know if the problem is solved
mhterres: what problems?
well, when we tried to use it, X started with errors and we can't use the thin client
|12:22||makghosh|afk is now known as makghosh|
We talked with sbalneaves, but our client decide to use another client and the problem "disappear" :-)
but now we had another client that had a lot of geode thin clients and I was wondering if the problem was solved or continues
mhterres: what errors, I've not heard any such problems. I guess this is just generic then, not video (as in, mplayer, etc) specific?
mhterres: what Geode model (GX, GX2, LX)? etc
well, X starts but I didn't work
mhterres: there used to be issues with the geode chipsets - depending on your dist, if you update fully (chroot as well) you should be OK..although the geodes aren't incredibly powerful
I have a geode client in my office and it's kind of "meh" when it comes to smoothness, etc.
Our client want to run local app in the geodes
GX500 with 128Mb
he wants to run firefox 2.0 with java locally
what do you think ?
|12:41||elisboa has quit IRC|
|12:41||elisboa has joined #ltsp|
doesn't firefox 2.0 eat RAM for lunch? That locally is, meh
|12:42||Blinny has joined #ltsp|
even if firefox runs happily, java will kill it with that ramsize
I imagine that :-(
and especially FF 2.0 wasnt very ram friendly, i'd even go with 3.0
and what do you think about 256 mb ?
and for your initial question, geode generally isnt very well maintained upstream ... there are efforts going on but every intel client will be a safer bet
the problem is that the client already had a lot of geode clients :-(
256M might work
well, I'll take a look in that
but ogra, the geode is working fine in LTSP now ?
|12:45||tux_440volt is now known as subhodip|
no, not all models and not on all releases/distros
it varies totally
and GX500 ? do you know ?
in the last ubuntu version
not from the top of my head, Gadi might
heheh, is there some place where I can search for that ? in the wiki maybe ?

but there's no harm in trying I guess =)
maybe I will :-)
hey, another question
can I use a mic in the thin client ?
I've seen it work, and seen it not
well, I never seen it work
I don't know if pulse supports it
I need to discover it

this isn't technically an ltsp question, but i've got a requirement for an ltsp server to allow some users lan access + internet access and some users just lan access. all need a browser so you can't just hide it from some users, can you create iptables rules for this and base it on a user group or something? or is there a better solution that i can do on the ltsp server w/out a router/firewall?
maybe force all http traffic that isn't lan bound (we have some web apps on the lan) through a squid proxy and require auth for it? that seems like a pain though.
matttttt: yes, there is an iptables module to allow by user
or by group too I think
If you already have a proxy, I would use it.
if you don't, by group might be the easy path
