hello all, I'm an 8th grade teacher and hoping this is the right place to get help.
I know you can set up thin clients that log onto the edubuntu server -- is there anyway you can set up a workstation (where all programs run off the local harddrive) but all log-ins go to the server and all user data is saved on the server? All support pages I'm finding talk about thin clients -- I want clients with harddrives but that log-on to the server
tim, this isn't a good time.. and neither is the weekend..
not many poeple are around
ok....thanks....when is the best time?
12 hours from now .. on a weekday
i teach during the week....weekday nights maybe?
you might be lucky
thanks for the info
you might catch the europeans if you come by before work
i think it's about 3 pm or so if i'm here at 5 am pacific time -- something like that
i'll do that
3 pm in europe
ah.. pacific time..
you still might catch people at other times..
on the weekdays
it's just sketchy
it's almost midnight here....
this weekend i'll try to do all the computers as thin clients anyway -- i was trying to get skolelinux installed but had so many problems

|09:37||* nonix4 ponders why jaunty ltsp client built inside KVM doesn't even try to contact the NBD while one built outside any VM works properly...|
tcpdump showing zero traffic...
How does it die? error messages?
...and, is the ltsp server in the kvm, or a client?
|09:47||otavio has joined #ltsp|
What works is ltsp server & client on hw, server in kvm with client on either doesn't. ipconfig: eth0: SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device ... /init: .: line 1: can't open /tmp/net-eth0.conf when client is in vm, IP-Config: no response after 60 secs - giving up when client is hw
strange, I have an ltsp server inside kvm working
not working too well but clients can boot
|10:20||japerry has quit IRC|
nonix4: that error says that there are no drivers in the initramfs for the particular ethernet card that the kvm emulates
nonix4: the second error with the client in hw could possibly mean that there are port problems. Does kvm run under root priviledges, so that it has access to ports < 1024? (=dhcp server)
well dhcpd obviously works as it gets that far in the boot... and nbd is at port 2000 anyway.
|10:36||pmatulis_ has joined #ltsp|
Right... well, ipconfig asks for a dhcp lease before the nbd mounting happens, so it seems like a dhcp problem.
maybe it asks that while network card isn't available for reason or another? (race condition?)
You could tell ipconfig to reuse the same ip that was sent in the pxe stage by putting IPAPPEND 3 in pxelinux.cfg/default, but I don't know if that's a proper solution to your problem

Lns: we are working with x64 jaunty and our chroots are X386
if you are here :)
alkisg: hmm, thanks... IPAPPEND 3 fixes the server-in-vm, client-on-hw problem. Now to get purely virtual stuff working...
nonix4: what nic does your kvm emulate?
E.g. lspci -nn on the virtual ltsp server
8139 on the virtual ltsp server
Urm, if the client also uses the same virtual nic, it shouldn't show "SIOCGIFINDEX: No such device"... :-/
well actually two on ltsp server, "Qumranet, Inc. Virtio network device" and that Realtek thing.
Can you see which one does the virtual client have?
|11:03||nivelpp has joined #ltsp|
(or better yet, change it to realtek?)
alkisg: can you help me with two last things :) ? everithing is going OK but :
1.sound does not work , it work in first time login after servver restart
2.localdevices does not work
i was following manuals but , no succes
nivelpp: could you remind me your setup? distro/version/localapps or not etc...
alkisg: ok, so virtio network driver is missing from jaunty ltsp initrd... changed it to use e1000 since that is closer to actual hardware in use here :)
nonix4: if you're gonna use the IPAPPEND 3 trick, you'll also need to make a symlink to lts.conf because the clients won't be able to find it
ln -s ltsp/i386/lts.conf /var/lib/tftpboot/lts.conf
|11:17||vagrantc has joined #ltsp|
alkisg: ubuntu 9.04 i386 , clients i386
nivelpp: "localdevices do not work" ===> are your users in the fuse group?
it doesn not matter that localapps are enabled or not , problem is the same
alkisg: yes i have tested it with one user and he is in fuse
nivelpp: and if you plug in a usb stick or a cd, it doesn't work?
alkisg: yes, exactly , when i log in to client command line i can see devices in /dev/
|11:24||vagrantc has quit IRC|
nivelpp: well, the only other reason I've seen localapps fail was when badly formatted sticks were used
Did you try with a cd? If it doesn't work with a cd, you'll need someone more experienced than me to guide you through the udev logs...
ok , i will try it
alkisg: and what abou sound ?
I've heard of pulse crashing, and I think it logs some things to the local syslog, but I don't know anything more about sound. It always works out of the box for me.
alkisg: ok thanks , i will try to reinstall my system maybe i have configured sometihng wronk and i dont now what
