<sbalneav>
MasterOne: Yep
08:06
I'm here
08:06
<MasterOne>
good :)
08:07
is it possible to watch a HDTV 1080p video on a thin client?
08:07
considering the server is powerful enough, and the thin client is connected to a 1920x1200 LCD
08:07
<sbalneav>
no idea
08:08
<sep>
MasterOne, try it and tell us :)
08:08
<MasterOne>
I mean in particular, if the video data sent from the server to the client is not only encrypted, but also compressed
08:08
<sbalneav>
are you running the app locally on the thin client?
08:08
<MasterOne>
no, the video player is running on the server
08:09
I already did some tests to run video in fullscreen mode on my 1600x1200 laptop LCD, which worked fine without problem
08:11
so is the video data stream between the server and thin client compressed, and if yes, is it possible to tell a ratio?
08:11
<sbalneav>
No
08:11
<cliebow__>
you say those olpc laptops have cranks in case of power outages?
08:11
<sbalneav>
The video stream between the server and the thin client will be uncompressed.
08:11
<MasterOne>
hm
08:12
then 1080p should not be possible, because 1920x1080x24x24/8 = 149,299 Mbit
08:13
<sbalneav>
cliebow__: No idea, I thought they were supposed to, but I haven't ever seen a crank on one :)
08:14
<cliebow__>
maybe a footpedal..like a rubber raft or sewing machine
08:14
<sbalneav>
I'm thinking a hat with a solar panel on top.
08:14
<cliebow__>
tin foil of course..multitasking
08:15
keeps the rfid readers at bay
08:15
<sbalneav>
Absolutely
08:15
<MasterOne>
are you sure, the signal exchanged between the LTSP server and the Xserver on the thin client is uncompressed? because then even 1600x1200x24x24 should not be possible
08:18
I was thinking of using a thin client to feed a LCD TV or video projector
08:18
<sbalneav>
If you're running the video player software up on the server, then the only thing that'll be going across the wire will be standard X protocol.
08:18fox2k has quit IRC
08:19
<sbalneav>
So, however X chooses to do that is how it does it. I don't beleive it's doing any compression.
08:19
<MasterOne>
that's strange, because I really thought the X protocol has some kind of compression included
08:20
<cliebow__>
MasterOne, x tunneled via ssh has some compression
08:20

I am just installing some missing codex, then I can test a 1080p video on my LTSP5 test installation (dual xeon 64bit server --> laptop with 1600x1200 LCD as thin client)

08:35
<fgiraldeau>
Q-FUNK : hi there
08:35
<Q-FUNK>
Gadi is somewhere at the UDS
08:35
so is sbalneav
08:43
<Gadi>
Q-FUNK: the concensus is in the near term to forward port the last working amd driver (ogra says that there was a working driver in gutsy at one point)
08:43
Q-FUNK: then, in the longer term, we can work on fixing the latest code
08:43
<Q-FUNK>
Gadi: ogra misses the larger picture: new X is the problem
08:44
<Gadi>
but, gutsy has used the new X all along
08:44
so, if it was once working...
08:44
<Q-FUNK>
yes and it has been broken all along
08:44
<Gadi>
he thinks otherwise
08:44
<Q-FUNK>
it was working with edgy
08:44
<Gadi>
and feisty
08:44
<Q-FUNK>
it also works with etch
08:44
yes, feisty too
08:45
it doesn't work with gutsy and lenny, using the exact same source.
08:45
so there is no concensus
08:45
<Gadi>
:)
08:45
<Q-FUNK>
and it would be a good idea for ogra to bother talking to me about this
08:46
<Gadi>
we're all just trying to sort it out
08:46
ogra's got plenty on his own plate. He's just trying to help me investigate
08:47
<Q-FUNK>
try one simple test: same source tarball (currently 2.7.7.3), built against feisty's X, then built against gutsy's X.
08:47
works rock-solid against feisty or etch X core.
08:48
fails with lenny and gutsy, both of which have newer X.
08:48
<Gadi>
how about the older source?
08:49
<Q-FUNK>
Gadi: btw, Bryce mentions that he spoke to Bernie of OLPC. it could be a good opportunity to fix the current source.
08:49
same result using older source.
08:49
Gadi: -> #ubuntu-x

hey guys, quick q = for gutsy, what's the format for RCFILE_XX in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf ? I'm using relative pathnames such as /etc/ipaqsoundfix.sh but it's not working.
16:04
I've rebuilt the image with no change - if I run the script manually after logged in, it works.
16:07
<mistik1>
First I would ask where you are placing the script?
16:08
Unless the format has drastically changed it should be RCFILE_01 = ipaqsoundfix.sh
16:09
then ipaqsoundfix.sh should be in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/rc.d
16:09
<lns_>
mistik1, wow ok - thanks! i'll try that right now
16:10
mistik1, there's no rc.d
16:10
<mistik1>
I'm not sure if Ubuntu has changed where the files are located though
16:10
<lns_>
shoudl i just drop it where lts.conf is?
16:10
<mistik1>
prolly not
16:11
<lns_>
mistik1, it used to be relative to the chroot, which is why i had RCFILE_01 = /etc/ipaqsoundfix.sh
16:11
<mistik1>
what does the directory structure look like in etc ?
16:11
It used to be rc.d
16:12
<lns_>
OIC, it's rcX.d
16:12
<mistik1>
*nod*
16:12
<lns_>
drr ;)
16:12
i could probably throw it in rc.local
16:12
and not worry about lts.conf RCFILE_01
16:13
<mistik1>
I would think RCFILE would be more flexible
16:13
as in pretty easy to enable it for one client and not others
16:13
<lns_>
mistik1, good point, but all my clients are the same hardware (fortunately) =)
16:14
<mistik1>
Still good practice
16:14
<lns_>
mistik1, ok, point taken =) i'll do that

mistik1, I don't see any rc.d in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/
16:22
<mistik1>
Is there rc#.d ?
16:22
<lns_>
but i put it right in there and referenced it, now the login wav file sounds sped up by about 100%
16:22
?
16:22
mistik1, no - that was in the actual chroot
16:23
<mistik1>
You would need to ask one of the guys using the ubuntu versions, I have not to date nor will I
16:23
<lns_>
ok....thanks a bunch =)
16:23
<mistik1>
So I dont know what the changed in the operation of LTSP

quick question, should I use the open dns accounts for better speed on my thin clients?
16:36

are you sure DNS is your slowdown?

<mistik1>
I dont think i've ever heard anyone say dns would speed them up
16:37
<vagrantc>
lns_: it is definitely RCFILE_NN = /full/path/relative/to/chroot
16:37
<lns_>
vagrantc, thanks!! =)
16:38
<vagrantc>
i.e. RCFILE_01=/etc/foo if your file was in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/foo
16:38
<lns_>
vagrantc, do i have to ltsp-update-image afterwards?
16:38
<vagrantc>
i wrote that bit of code
16:38
<lns_>
and after any other change like this that involves creating/modifying files in /opt/ltsp/arch?
16:39
<vagrantc>
lns_: if you modify anyhting in /opt/ltsp/i386 you need to re-run ltsp-update-image.
16:39
at least on ubuntu
16:39
<lns_>
vagrantc, ok just making sure =) I really like how lts.conf works though, in /var/lib/... - makes trackign changes very easy
16:39* vagrantc hates it
16:39
<mistik1>
vagrantc: Thank you for verifying that little piece of datum
16:40
<scrapbunn1>
i just had to switch my ubuntu 7.10 dns servers to the ones from open dns.com to fix speed issues so I wanted to check is it would help with thin client speed on the internet as well
16:42
<lns_>
i'm really getting used to how LTSP works, then everything has to change...bah. =p at least it's not like xp -> vista..ugh.
16:42
<scrapbunn1>
i finally got my dell gx110's running as thin clients with an edubuntu 7.10 server, got sound and flash all working well. just checking speed and programs now
16:43
that's why i ask :)
16:48
<lns_>
vagrantc, do you know about gstreamer issues after feisty -> gutsy upgrade? My gstreamer / gnome volume control is broken after the upgrade.
16:48
<vagrantc>
lns_: nope.
17:00
<lns_>
yikes...anyone know how to "rebuild" the sound architecture for ltsp? It seems that upgrading it has left my network in a broken state. =(

/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/init.d directory, and

specify the name of the script in one of these entries.
