Is there a specific reason why LTSP (rhel branch anyway) uses old initd-scripts and not NetworkManager?
12:45
...initd-scripts for networking...
12:45
<ogra_>
the network setup is done from the initramfs during boot ... based on PXE data ... i doubt you can easily make NM work in initrd's yet unless you want to end up with a really big initrd
12:46
(beyond this , i think the fedora LTSP branches have been unmaintained for years now)
12:47
<bcg>
initramfs yes, dhclient is used there. but after that, especially on reboot init.d/network will be called to bring eth down.
12:47
<ogra_>
(and there has never been an actual RHEL one)
12:48
<bcg>
not official, but take a look at https://git.launchpad.net/~bcgss/ltsp/+git/ltsp-rhel7/
12:50
<ogra_>
ah, i didnt know about that branch ... better ask that person then :)
12:50
<bcg>
that would be me.
12:51
and I'm asking here why this design choice.
12:52
<alkisg>
bcg: in Debian/Ubuntu, we write "manual" in /etc/network/interfaces to prohibit ifupdown and network-manager from re-initializing the interface, thus breaking the connection
12:54
<bcg>
yes, but what about other network interfaces? not supported?
12:54
<alkisg>
network-manager can manage all other network interfaces as usual, we don't touch that part
12:54
E.g. if the ltsp client needs to access wifis or VPNs, it can do so
12:58
<bcg>
I see, it's only removed on thin client, not on fat.
12:59
(client/Debian/share/ltsp/init-ltsp.d/50-rm-system-services for example)
12:59
<alkisg>
Yes, just to save ram

bennabiy: I didn't upload it yet, I'm checking some things in bountysource.com to see if it's ok as a hosting platform
14:23
I'll probably create a repository, like the greek schools ppa, with updated versions, and allow access to it to the sponsors...

So that people have some reason to donate

If anyone is remotely curious, doing a remote SSHFS homedir doesn't work very well.

(not that this is an unexpected outcome)

18:25
<alkisg>
LAN
18:25
You mean over ADSL?
18:25
<mmetzger>
Not ADSL, but WAN.
18:26
<alkisg>
Eh, sure, latency is a big issue there if you don't use aggressive caching, even on writes...
18:28
<mmetzger>
This is completely as expected - just was curious how bad it would be.
18:28
And honestly some stuff works reasonably well - firefox is not among said stuff.

<bennabiy>
altsp: simply state what you have tried, and where you are at. Ubuntu 16.04 works very well for ltsp
19:07
<altsp>
Ok let me rephrase. I have a computer with one ehternet and one wifi. Installation of Ltsp with the 14.04 "alternte iso" worked like a charm. I've tried on 16.04 but without success. I have read it is because 16.04 needs a workaround. I need step by step instruction for this kind of computer.
