It's an old kernel that doesn't know about the new intel chipsets
08:57
Install the newer hardware enablement stack in the chroot
08:57
sudo ltsp-chroot apt-get install --purge linux-hwe-generic xserver-xorg-lts-trusty xorg
09:01
<adimetrius>
conflicts with libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglapi-mesa
09:01
<alkisg>

i did
09:05
conflicts: libgl1-mesa-dri (>= 0~)
09:05
same thing in parenthesis for each of 3 packages
09:06
<alkisg>
adimetrius: I can have a look via vnc if you like, otherwise try asking in #ubuntu-x, it should certainly be possible to install that kernel in 12.04, it's included in the 12.04.5 cd
09:06

vnc-dide: To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr - this is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
09:07
<alkisg>
Maybe you've manually installed broken packages for mesa etc
09:08
<adimetrius>
i have 12.04.5 on the server, not sure .5 is in the ltspchroot
09:09
<alkisg>
Right, you should be able to put it there, if not it's a local issue
09:09
!ltsp-pnp

ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp

This method ^ makes things much simpler :)
09:11
<adimetrius>
from briefly looking at the page, it's significant transition time, right?
09:11
<alkisg>
Yes, it's for new installations
09:12
<adimetrius>
so i can't have them in parallel?

<alkisg>
You can. The problem is that your 12.04 has a very old ltsp version and a few changes are needed in some configuration files

09:23
<adimetrius>
when smth works, i don't usually upgrade :) cause every upgrade breaks something that works, that's why i got 3yrs old stuff
09:25
<alkisg>
OK, but now you did have something broken so it was time to upgrade
09:26
<adimetrius>
i upgraded hardware :-)
09:26
1 of 3 conflicts gone, mesa-glx and mesa still conflicting (>_0~)
09:33
<alkisg>
adimetrius: I tried updating only the kernel
09:33
If it works, ok, otherwise we'll also update the xorg
09:33
I'll check why it's broken...

muppis: if it's a thin client, does it see the timeserver, or do you need to do nat on the ltsp server?
15:44
<muppis>
Ltsp server runs ntpd and it doesn't even against that.
15:45
<alkisg>
Do you have TIMESERVER=server in lts.conf?
15:49
<muppis>
Nope.
15:49zama has joined IRC (zama!~zama@unaffiliated/stryx/x-3871776)
15:50
<alkisg>
Then it's not trying to sync against the ltsp server
15:50
<muppis>
Runned ntpd in debug mode and it logs communication with client. Client still says no.
15:52
Oh.. Didn't notice that it loads i386/lts.conf, which has timeserver set.
15:53
Bummer and I'm hungry.
15:56
<alkisg>
The client starts from the epoch, 1970, make sure that you don't have any options against synchronizing against such large differences
15:56
And also it might take a minute to show up in ldm
15:57
Get a shell on the client and try `ntpdate server`, then check if it's successful
15:57
<muppis>
That's what I've been doing and it still says no. :D
15:58
(Reference: Little Britain: Computer says no)
15:59
On x86 clients it works fine.
16:01
<alkisg>
muppis: ntpdate -b server
16:01
Does that work?
16:01
And also -v (verbose) on the client will help
16:04
<muppis>
hmm... With -d it shows that it receives correct time and shows correct offset, but it doesn't set the date.
16:05
<alkisg>
that's what -d does, why did you ran -d?
16:05
try -b
16:05
ntpdate -v -b server
16:06
<muppis>
-d is for debug. Shows lot more than -v
16:06
<alkisg>
-d means "don't set the date" though
16:07
<muppis>
Well, -v -b didn't give any better results. :D
16:07
<alkisg>
no error and not setting the date? hmm...
16:08
In my rpi2 tests, the date was set 1 minute after ldm showed up
16:09
<muppis>
No server suitable for synchronization found.
16:09
<alkisg>
And you did put "server" as the parameter....
16:09
How about ntpdate -v -b ntp.ubuntu.com ?
16:09
<muppis>
Same result.
16:10
<alkisg>
try to set the date to yesterday before running ntpdate
16:10
To see if it's the big time difference that's causing it
16:10
<muppis>
Didn't help. Tried when set it to today.
16:11
<alkisg>
can you ping ntp.ubuntu.com ?
16:12
<muppis>
Yes.
16:13
Which release you're using? That one is 14.04.
16:13
<alkisg>
I think I tried with 14.04 and 15.10
16:13
Did you use my wiki page, or e.g. some raspbian chroot?
16:15
<muppis>
Your wiki.
16:16
<alkisg>
OK so we used the same 4.2 kernel and the same distro/version

muppis: don't forget -b
16:23
the step is too large to do it without it
16:23
so try -b -d
16:24
Or put today's date before trying without -b
16:24
(or better yet, this hour, not this date, something small that it can sync from, if you'll use -b)
16:24
*you won't use -b
16:25
<muppis>
No effect.
16:25
<alkisg>
did it again say this? 192.168.0.1: Server dropped: strata too high
16:25
<muppis>
Jep.
16:26
<alkisg>
Try setting the date to the minute first
16:28
<muppis>
Given offset is 47.857372, but still says same.
16:29
This is just too strange.

<bennabiy>
alkisg, do you know where the settings are in mate for what goes on the menu bar?
17:17
<alkisg>
bennabiy: run `dconf watch /`, change whatever you want, check which gsetting changes
17:18
<bennabiy>
alkisg: thanks
17:20
where are those gsettings stored?
17:27
<alkisg>
bennabiy: I think those questions are mostly suited for #mate-desktop... the user settings are in the user's dconf database, and the system settings are shipped by the packages in /usr/share/glib/schemas etc
17:27
<bennabiy>
alkisg: thank you

vagrantc: we are preparing for a 0.5.9 epoptes release, we don't have anything else to commit, we only have a bit of testing left
20:12
Would you like to do some testing as well? Should I commit the changelog etc?
20:12
(actually there are enough changes to make it a 0.6.0 release afaik)

alkisg: go ahead and commit ... we can always do another point release if needed

21:15* alkisg was thinking of a full week as the test period..

<alkisg>
Writing the respawn trap was fun... epoptes => runs socat => connects to server => runs sh => server sends client-functions as stdin => defines trap => on kill, it re-runs epoptes!
21:16
Hopefully there will be no regressions there
21:19
In other news, it looks like the gnome-keyring issue will finally get solved, I found its developer on IRC and I set up a VM for him to troubleshoot the issue
21:20
We also found a better workaround in case he doesn't manage to solve it in code, to pass disable_hardlinks in sshfs, instead of doing chmod -x gnome-keyring-daemon
