Hm.. Stream didn't play well when app runned at server but plays well when runned as local app.

04:11
Well, actually after(noon)x4 here
04:15
<andygraybeal>
:))
04:15
so that presentation softwar worked, but now the guy in charge of the presentation doesn't want to use it ! gah.. people.
04:15
but anyway, it works, and we can do it in the future if neededd
04:22
<muppis>
USB automouting does not work with 64 bit client, but works with 32 bit client.
04:23
Yet haven't tried 32 bit runned in 64 bit's hardware.
04:26
<alkisg>
What presentation software?
04:26
muppis: search the mailing list there was a patch suggested for 64 bit
04:28
<muppis>
alkisg, thanks. I'll do that, when I have time for that.

Is there possibility to access FTDI chip (USB UART) from server or do I need run app locally?
04:43
I need it for java application and it doesn't start locally because of missing GtkToolkit
04:45
<andygraybeal>
muppis, omg.. your amazing
04:46
<muppis>
andygraybeal, what I've done now? 0.o
04:46
<andygraybeal>
usb uart access .. on clients.. from the server.. your awesome!
04:46
i cna't imagine :)
04:47
<muppis>
Well, if I can't make java runned locally, then that need to be done. :)
04:47
<andygraybeal>
what is it that you are doing anyway? what is the overall application/job being done?
04:49
<muppis>
Trying to get Arduino IDE running, that needs access to PIC and that one is behind FTDI.
04:49
<andygraybeal>
arduino effin rules
04:49
yes, i should marry yuo
04:50
i have 2 arduino!
04:51
<muppis>
I got 3, but I think I burned one by powering it incorrectly.
04:51
<andygraybeal>
is it for a class?
04:51
<muppis>
For my thesis.
04:52
<andygraybeal>
nice .. can you explain what that is in a sentence or two?
04:53
<muppis>
Trying to make GPS locator where data is transferred over radiolink and delivered over BT at user end.
04:53
<alkisg>
Why not install all the java dependencies locally?
04:54
<muppis>
alkisg, trying to do that.
04:54
But I'm not familiar with error messages of java. ;)
04:54
<alkisg>
gdebi is your friend, it automatically installs dependencies
04:58
<andygraybeal>
muppis, very awesome, i have to read what you wrote like 3 times
04:58
muppis, so what would the use of that be? i'm sorry i'm not very imaginative
05:00
<muppis>
andygraybeal, like locating hound from the forest.
05:00
<andygraybeal>
nice
05:00
we got coon hunters around here that spend way too much on their dogs
05:08
<muppis>
Puuh.. Runninbg out of space in client. Too much fooling around. :)
05:10
Finally. Wasn't that hard, just finding correct packages. :)
05:16
<andygraybeal>
so your doing this in ltsp environment; are you planning on the "hound" to wear the arduino? or how does it all fit together?

05:18
ignore me.. get some work done.
05:19
<muppis>
andygraybeal, I'm just lazy to install local Ubuntu to ease my task, but yes. My plan is put arduino-clone to hound's back to send it location to other arduino which checks it and delivers it to GPS software at mobile phone.
05:20
<andygraybeal>
you are definetly pilot!
05:20
cheif!
05:20
<muppis>
I'm not feeling like that. Just trying to doing by laws at here in Finland.
05:21
<andygraybeal>
doing by laws at here? ? there is a law ? i'm confused with your sentence sorry.
05:22
<muppis>
Our local laws restricts radiousage in such of thing.s
05:22
<andygraybeal>
aaah okay
05:25
just because arduino is so awesome, i'm wondering if you've heard of another device, that scales better and is open source.. designed by christian klippel
05:26
he calls it a multi-io ... his old website is down..so i don't know if he still has schematics and parts list around
05:27
it's bigger also, so scales best, but not applicable in smaller spaces.. though he is (was?) making it smaller.. but it iwll never be as small as arduino.
05:29alkisg (~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg) left irc: Quit: Leaving.
05:31
<muppis>
I don't how much more open and better scaling open source can be? Java based IDE is released under GPL and microcontroller libraries under LGPL. :)
05:32
Best sides of those clones are that they are small. Even with (small) battery it fits in matchbox.
05:34
<andygraybeal>
no no .. i mean hardware
05:35
and when scaling i mean hardware scaling, like more sensors.. that's all.
05:35
not that it is better for your applicaiton though - i am just letting you know about this other device, that's all.
05:36
and the size of this device is much bigger.. like think a regular sized book
05:36
if'n ever you need an application that needs more sensors and etc :)
05:39
i can't find the multi-io information though.. so maybe he has taken it down
05:40
his nick is mamalala and he lives in #dataflow
05:46
<muppis>
Ok, it's more like sensorboard than microcontroller?
05:46
<andygraybeal>
i think both
05:46
i think it does everything arduino does, but hardware wise it is more scalable (though much bigger)
05:46
by scalable i mean it is able to handle more sensors
05:47
i dunno i should stop talking, i don't really know what i'm talking about ;)
05:47
but mamalala can help if you ever need such a device.
05:51
<muppis>
Thanks.

Getting out of luck again, but this time with Arduino IDE.
06:00
Bummer. I'm forced to install local Ubuntu to get things working. Shame.
06:01
<andygraybeal>
ah client image doesn't cut it?
06:01
<muppis>
Getting Java IO errors when trying to flash code to chip and got no nerve get it fixed.
06:02
<andygraybeal>
*nods* sounds scary.
06:03
<muppis>
It not scary, it just doesn't work.
06:08
<alkisg>
Why not use ltsp fat clients instead? They're just like local installations...
06:08
And if you use nfs or a dedicated partition, there's even no need to run ltsp-update-image
06:09
<muppis>
alkisg, maybe that beats the local installation. I'll give a try.
06:09

06:10
<muppis>
Maybe my wlan kills benefits of fat clients. ;)
06:10
<alkisg>
Fat clients require less bandwidth than thin though
06:10
So if you were working with thin, it should be better with fat anyway
06:12
<muppis>
Only booting over wlan is slow.
06:17
<Hyperbyte>
muppis, real men never reboot.
06:17

06:36

06:37

But the ghost line that appeared up there kinda ruined it. :(
06:48
<muppis>
I just don't like the sound what they make.
07:02
<Hyperbyte>
You know
07:02
If you listen closely to the sound, you'll actually hear them speak... seriously.
07:02

07:11
<Hyperbyte>
Me too. So how do you like your birthday parade?
07:13
<muppis>
alkisg, I'm trying xubuntu as fat..
07:16
<alkisg>
How much RAM on the client?
07:16
<andygraybeal>
Hyperbyte, hah.. have no idea man, it was weird.. it must be a special day.. but i don't keep up with stupid holidays
07:17
i hate holidays.. not to be humbug.. every day is awesome to me
07:27
<muppis>
alkisg, 256, IIRC.
07:27
Whoa! 1 GB.
07:27
<alkisg>
muppis: too low for a fat client or a standalone installation...
07:27
ah, 1 gb is better :)
07:27
So why xubuntu? Try classic gnome first?
07:28
<muppis>
Poor GPU.
07:28
<alkisg>
Don't they both use gtk?
07:28
What's the difference for gpu?
07:28
<muppis>
Probably none.

07:52
<andygraybeal>
:(
07:55
<muppis>
Or not actual kernel panic. Responds to ctrl-alt-del, but not anything else.
07:56
<alkisg>
Link speed shouldn't be at all related to kernel panics
07:57
Which ubuntu version? 10.04?
07:57
<muppis>
Somehow it hangs for 240s which causes khelper to get killed and booting stops.

<alkisg>
You might have hit the nbd-proxy problem
07:58
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/589034
07:58
Disable nbd-proxy. And also if you want re-enable nbd compression, it makes nbd access 2.5 times faster.
07:59
<muppis>
How I do that?
07:59
<alkisg>
To disable nbd-proxy, see the bug report above
07:59
To reenable nbd compression, modify /etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.conf
08:00
(nbd-proxy was disabled by default in natty)
08:00
(so the problem only affects 10.04 and 10.10)
08:03
<muppis>
Just uncomment existing line in ltsp-update-image.conf?
08:03
<alkisg>
Yup
08:04
Don't worry about the "unstable" remark, that was caused by nbd-proxy

Oh my.. I'm lazy doing that patch with N900..
08:06
But maybe I don't have a choice.
08:10
Oh. I should read whole site first :)
08:33
Still hangs on same spot.
08:39
Compression did the trick.
08:39
<alkisg>
muppis: grep initrd /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
08:39
What does this give you?
08:39
Nah it's not the compression it's nbd-proxy, but anyways if it works now all ok
08:39
Compression is just for speed
08:40
<muppis>
Couldn't be proxy as 8 didn't disable it.
08:40
s/8/I/
08:40
<alkisg>
Well it can't be compression because it's not related to blocking networked file systems :)
08:40
nbd-proxy only hangs sometimes, maybe it was just random and you'll see the problem again
08:41
<muppis>
Maybe.
