<xKill>
Hi all... just a question, anybody knows why newer firefox versions hangs or crash on ltsp (ubuntu mate 16.04). It works well on version 45 or older.
12:44
<alkisg>
xKill: they switched to gtk3 at some point
12:45
That uses different libraries, maybe cairo, so different code paths to crash from :D
12:45
Try to switch to diskless ltsp fat clients
12:45
!fatclients
12:45
<ltsp>
fatclients: Nowadays LTSP supports thin and fat clients. They are both diskless and netbooted from the same LTSP chroot, but while thin clients run the session on the server and transfer the screen, fat clients run the session locally with their own CPU/RAM, thus performing amazingly better. See also !ltsp-pnp and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients
12:45
<alkisg>
!ltsp-pnp
12:45
<ltsp>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
12:46
<xKill>
hi alksig, i've tryed fat clients but I have small thin clients and cant run as fat
12:46
1gb atom. they boot fine but apps like libreoffice or firefox don't run good, they are more like.. crawl... xD
12:47
<alkisg>
xKill: atoms with 1 gb ram should be better than thins... which cpu exactly?
12:48
<xKill>
atom 230
12:48
1.6 gb
12:49
I've tryed last week. Faster computers runs good. but these atoms sucks
12:51
<alkisg>
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Atom+230+%40+1.60GHz => score 308
12:51
Eh, it's like p4, kinda lame,
12:51
but still, if you have e.g. 10 such clients and not a monster server, it should still be better
12:51
(if you set it up correctly)
12:51
<xKill>
i have like 80 clients
12:51
<alkisg>
Heh, then it would surely be better; how much lan speed does your server have, just 1 gbps?
12:51
<xKill>
yep, it is a vm
12:52
now happily running ubuntu 10.10, they need an update for sure.
12:52
<alkisg>
I can't imagine how slow it would be to use 80 clients with a single gigabit server
12:52
Happily? And yet they don't like atoms as fat clients?!
12:52
Beats me...
12:52
<xKill>
I have 3 ltsp servers running
12:52
vm's
12:53
my servers are poweredge r710 with 4 gb network adapters
12:53
<alkisg>
With the fat client mode, were you able to launch firefox in 20 secs, and watch fullscreen youtube videos?
12:54
<xKill>
i've tryed it on a laptop, i5 4 gb ram
12:54
all was really fast
12:54
but then on normal clients all was slow
12:54
<alkisg>
In my experience, with those clients you should be able to:
12:55
1) as thin clients, launch firefox in a couple of seconds, and NOT be able to watch full screen youtube,
12:55
2) as fat clients, launch firefox in 20 seconds (the first time; faster later on), and BE able to watch full screen youtube
12:55
(1) gets a lot worse if you use like 20-30 clients on each server
12:55
<xKill>
firefox launched and runned better than thin clients
12:56
but still sucks
12:56
<alkisg>
Yeah sure, it's like pentium 4's, what do you except there...
12:56
You should have invested on better clients rather that on a good server :D
12:56
You can use localapps firefox if you want
12:56
It's a mix of those 2 models
12:56
Only firefox locally; the rest runs on the server
13:01
And btw of course you could file a bug report to firefox, to tell them that it doesn't run under remote X anymore
13:01
Does it work with LDM_DIRECTX=True?
13:01
And there should be some settings to adjust the acceleration there, to prevent crashes...
13:02
<xKill>
yep Im using directx
13:03
I would give a try to localpps
13:03
is it possible to run firefox with java plugin as localapp?
13:03
firefox 45 runs like a charm.
13:24
<alkisg>
xKill: the java plugin of firefox is deprecated
13:25
It's been removed in firefox 52
13:25
Yes of course it's possible to run it as a localapp as long as you can run it normally :)
13:27
Try firefox esr, i think it'll support java for 1 more year, till 2018
13:28
<xKill>
We use some data from a website that runs on a java applet, so I need java. It sucks but I cant get rid of it
13:29
<alkisg>
Sure, you'll just need to be insecure for the next years until you get rid of it
13:29
As no browser supports it anymore :)
13:29
Oracle suggested to switch to webstart etc
13:30
<xKill>
yep.. im afraid so... Im going to try localapps
