nice article on etherboot. Anyone here remember etherboot? blog.ksplice.com/2010/05/scalable-day-to-day-diskless-booting/

ya, it is cool
11:35
I remember trying to get etherboot to do what I wanted before I ran across Jim doing this back in the 90s
11:36
<alkisg>
With the new "embed a script" feature of rom-o-matic, dhcp-less booting got very very easy
11:37
I can just download a gpxe image from rom-o-matic, add a static IP for the client and for the ltsp server, and I'm done...

<alkisg>
hi
12:03
<davemir>
alkisg: I have installed the iTALC
12:04
alkisg: but when the program starts I get a message
12:05
alkisg: The message makes: No authentication-keys were found or your old one were broken. Please create a new key-pair using ICA.
12:06
<alkisg>
davemir: I'm programming something now, I don't have time for italc support. Could you please ask generally in the channel, for whoever may be available to help you?
12:07
<davemir>
ok
12:07
alkisg: thanks
12:08
<alkisg>
(btw I've stopped using italc since some months because it was crashing too often)

help with lucid lynx please?
13:28
my old laptop that i was using as a test bed drops the screen after a few secs of the ubuntu name on the scr4en after boot. I think something is driving the screen to resolutions it cannot handle. Putting the xorg line into lts.conf with a resolution of 800x600 does not help.
13:29
ltsp does come up in a virtualbox machine and although I do not know what is telling X the kmax freq of the virtual screen, the virtual screen is sitting at 800x600 85hz. This is way too much for my opld laptop. I need 800x600 @ 60Hz
13:30
This seems to have only occurred after upgrading to lucid alternate fresh install.
13:30
chipset on laptop is intel 855gm
13:31
Thanks for any help.
13:31
<alkisg>
Ouch
13:31
Put nomodeset on pxelinux.cfg/default
13:31
<myjess>
ok. will try that.
13:31
<alkisg>
My laptop with 855 doesn't load X with the current lucid kernel
13:31
Let me get you the bug report..
13:32
See comments 48, 49 and 50 here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/511001
13:32
That's for standalone lucid, but of course the kernel problems also affect ltsp clients.
13:33
So the best solution is to use that patched kernel that is mentioned on post #49.
13:35
<myjess>
thanks, but I am going to go nuts if that means another build, it takes too long, and then I have to customise it each time for stuff I want in it.
13:35
Is there a wiji on NFS on lucid or karmic. I cannot find one. I need to use NFS until I get the bugs sorted.
13:35
<alkisg>
You don't need ltsp-build-client. Just to manually install that kernel, ltsp-update-image, and ltsp-update-kernels
13:36
See the "reverting to nfs" paragraph in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPWithoutNFS
13:38* alkisg is using a separate partition as /opt/ltsp/i386, and exports that directly with nbd, without ever running ltsp-update-image and without using nfs.
13:41ogra_cmpc has quit IRC
13:43
<myjess>
is there a quickl way to install that kernel and all it's other bits without picking each from from aptitude?
13:43ogra_cmpc has joined #ltsp
13:45
<myjess>
Not to worry, the 4 files are coming down now.
13:46
<alkisg>
Try the nomodeset while they're downloading
13:46
It should work, but then crash if you try to watch video with xv
13:46
Ah no, with the latest lucid kernel it won't work. Only with -19 or -20 it will.
13:46
So never mind, don't even test nomodeset...
13:46
<myjess>
nomodeset didn't make any diff. The screen kinda goes as if it is greying out and then nothing.
13:47
<alkisg>
Right, and also keyboard hangs and capslock isn't working etc etc
13:47
<myjess>
I tried that paragraph, course, I have to know what I am doing as in all things linux based, any docs are written with a view to the person understanding everything that isn;t actually written but needed also.
13:48
and with that paragraph, I don;t know the rest of what I am supposed to be installing/using.
13:48
<alkisg>
What paragraph?
13:48
The bug report?
13:48
<myjess>
No, the one you mentioned for NFS.
13:49
<alkisg>
Feel free to edit the wiki to make it clearer
13:49
<myjess>
I would but I don;t know what else I am supposed to be doing along with putting nfs server in and modifying the exports file, I mean how does the boot know to go looking for NFS other than NBD?
13:50
<alkisg>
Ugh. Someone changed it and removed useful stuff there.
13:51
<myjess>
Yeh, linux experts expect all of the rest of us to be linux experts.

Anyway, I did an apt-get install on the 4 files that had 2.6.34rc51* and then did the ltsp-update-kernels, but the kernels are still at 32.22. Obviously I have to do more to get 2.6.34rc51* in as a kernel.
13:53
<alkisg>
Here's a history of that page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPWithoutNFS?action=recall&rev=12
13:54
...but the person that changed it says that it doesn't work because of some bug. I haven't tried nfs on lucid so I don't know what's the deal with that.
13:54
<stgraber>
he's probably referring to some mountall bug
13:55
though that's either solved or quite easy to workaround
13:55
(never tried NFS on lucid though)
13:55
<myjess>
what else do I have to do to that modified kernel other than apot-get install *2.6.34rc51* ?
13:55
<alkisg>
stgraber: I wonder why he removed all he useful stuff about root_write_method="bind_mounts", BOOT=nfs etc though
13:55
myjess: ls -lha /opt/ltsp/i386/boot
13:55
What do you have there?
13:56
<stgraber>
alkisg: no idea, especially as I don't think we changed that upstream so it's still relevant for ubuntu ...
13:57
<myjess>
blast, the capslock has stuck via my remote desktop viewer. Only thing that cures that is a reboot of the server.
13:57
I*'ll have to run that ls -lhs command after the image is updated, yeh I knopw, the image shouldn;t have been upddated yet cos the new kernel doesn;t seem to be there.
13:58
server is in the attic you see, and I am in the kitchen
13:58
Thank gawd for my old ERIC Lights out card.
14:01
hmmm, the rc51 kernel has taken as far as the server is concerned but not in the /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386 dir.
14:02
<alkisg>
Erm, did you install that on the chroot or on the server?
14:02
You were supposed to install it to the chroot, for the client...
14:02
<myjess>
on the server.....
14:02
hahahahaha
14:02
riddy 'eck.
14:02
ok. let me have another go, but does it not have to be in /var/lib/tftpboot.... etc?
14:03
surely it has to be there cos it boots from the network?
14:03
<alkisg>
Yes, it need to be in the tftp dir and on /opt/ltsp/i386/boot as well
14:07
<myjess>
ok. Your ltsp-update-kernel script, does it take account of files with non standard kernel naming convention?
14:07johnny has left #ltsp
14:08johnny has joined #ltsp
14:09
<myjess>
never mind. I just learned something new again, the kernel files are taken from the /opt/ltsp/i386 files and put into /var/lib.
14:10
so me putting them in the i386/boot dir mean't that your script pulle dthem from there and stuck them in /.var/lib etc....
14:12johnny has left #ltsp
14:21
<myjess>
hhmmmm, something has broken.
14:22
could have been all my customisations before the image update. It has dropped me to initramfs (busybox)
14:22
<alkisg>
Did you try the nfs stuff? Do revert that back...
14:25
<myjess>
Yeh, that's next step in the long chain of events, thanks.
14:27
ok.Thanks for tonight. Looks like I have to go the NFS route. It's such a pity there was no way to log what was happening after the booted kernel did it's post.
14:29
I took out splash and quiet from the default file. It seems to do a good bit of booting until the screen goes blank and it crashes.
14:29johnny has joined #ltsp
14:36
<alkisg>
myjess: does it boot the new kernel or the old one?
14:36
Did you run ltsp-update-image and ltsp-update-kernels?
14:39
<myjess>
I did both. No way that I can see to tell what kernel is loading, but the vmlinuz shortcut if to the rc51 kernel so I assume it is booting that one.
14:40
For nfs, should there always be, no matter what, an ltsp-client-setup file in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/default?
14:40
Cos there isn;t
14:40
when I say shgortcut above, I mean linked of course.
14:44
ltsp-client-setup is not in /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/default, it is in the init.d subdir of etc. The wiki is wrong in that respect.
14:44Patina has quit IRC
14:47
<alkisg>
So what do you have in `ls -lha /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386` ?

14:50
<myjess>
32.22 kernels and 2.6.34rc51 kernels.
14:52
I cannot go any further with that rev12 LTSPnoNFS wiki. It mentions ltsp-client-setup that are not in the location mentioned in the wiki, not is there any root_write_method in any ltsp-client-setup file to be modified.
14:52
<alkisg>
myjess: so if you put SCREEN_07=shell in lts.conf, it boot fine (without X)?
14:52
<myjess>
let me try.
14:52
<alkisg>
Also try with SCREEN_07=vesa.
14:52
er sorry
14:52
XSERVER=vesa (different try)
14:58
<myjess>
I see running nfs-top and then mount aufs on root failed. Then after a few secs it switches to colour frame buffer device 128x45
15:00
then I cannot read the start of the lines but something is not found. Try passing init= bootarg.
15:01
then it drops to busybox.
15:01
<alkisg>
That sound like nfs-related problems... it's difficult to debug 2 things at once.
15:01
<myjess>
I haven't done anything NFS apart from install the server and put the export line in. I cannot do anymore cos the wiki is wrong.
15:02chupacabra has quit IRC
15:02
<myjess>
let me remove the rc kernels, go back to 32.22 and see what happens.

Only on weird dhcp setups
15:11
Not on regular ltsp servers...
15:11
E.g. if you're using your router as a dhcp server etc...
15:11
<myjess>
yeh, well, I have a dhcp router and then I use dnsmasqd
15:11
dnsmasqd on the ltsp server.
15:12
<alkisg>
Got it. Try to remove that autoconf=dhcp parameter there, udhcp is broken on Lucid.
15:12
<myjess>
seems to work, only diff is that the Ip changes between boot and later.
15:12
so what do I put in it's place.
15:12
<alkisg>
OK, if you tried it and it works, leave it
15:12
E.g. on cisco routers it only works for 1 PC, the others hang.
15:12
It depends on your router's dhcp server. Anyway.
15:13
<myjess>
BTW, booting up on vbox shows me "No init found. Try passing init= bootarg."

hi, any suggestion for a thin client that works fine and has graphic power enough to have "composition" enabled?
15:15
for instance, I'm trying a "yashi" that looks good, but seems can't work with 1920x1080 as thin client (works fine booting kubuntu on it's own), and in any case is slow with video performances

alkisg: fyi. Going back to kernel 32-22 allows ltsp to boot to tty screen 07.
15:44
<alkisg>
myjess: it doesn't boot at all with the newer kernel?! Did you properly install it?
15:44
Or did you just copy it from the server?
15:45
And, how did you go back? With a file copy? Or with removing the kernel, ltsp-update-kernels, ltsp-update-image etc?
15:45
<myjess>
i did the chroot which is your script, then did an apt-get install on 4 files, 2 of which were generic.
15:45
then i exited chroot and did ltsp-update-kernels
15:46
<alkisg>
? how did you find that kernel with apt-get?
15:46
It isn't on the repositories...
15:46
<myjess>
and then update image
15:46
<alkisg>
You'd need to download it and install it with dpkg, or use add-apt-repository...
15:47
<myjess>
as per the post you gave me, i added that guys ppa repo while in chroot before i did the apt-get install.
15:47
<alkisg>
And what do you mean "chroot which is your script"?
15:47
<myjess>
you have that chroot script in a wiki which i use.
15:47
<alkisg>
OK
15:47
And how did you remove it?
15:49
<myjess>
but i didn't know if I should have only apt-get the generic files, so i apt-get the 4 of them which had the latest rc number on them.
15:49
i removed them using apt-get remove, i then delered any bad links and recreated them in th chroot
15:50
<alkisg>
Hmmm ok, weird
15:50
<myjess>
I then exitedthe chroot and did ltsp-update-kernels and then update image.
15:50
<alkisg>
Can you run `lspci -nn | grep VGA` on the client? (boot it with SCREEN_02=shell)
15:50
(or SCREEN_07=shell)
15:51
